Ironing bedding!

I know boring question but how long does it take roughly to iron a duvet, two pillow cases and a sheet with a steam iron and starch??

She is not nice, she is getting at least £60 out of you that she shouldn’t. I’d be looking for someone else as she can’t be trusted.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/11/2020 10:08

Ironing bedding sounds like a complete ballache and she's letting you know this by only doing it if it's worth her while, ie by charging you £90 a time to do it.

viques · 05/11/2020 10:09

Cheaper to buy a few more sets of bedding, save them up and then send the bedding out to a laundry! Either that or buy a rotary ironing board (pricey) or an electric press (would pay for itself in a couple of months)

I do iron bedding, for my bed anyway, I use vintage linen sheets and pillow cases , and the effort of ironing them is well worth it. Doesn’t take me hours though. Ask your ironing lady to listen to music or the radio rather than watch a movie, you can’t watch and iron IMO, not unless you have asbestos fingers.

Wannabegreenfingers · 05/11/2020 10:09

Is this some weird boasting thread?

Single working parent, I don't iron bedding life is to short. I can think of 100's of things to spend £90 on and ironing isn't one of them !

So to answer your question, either give her a time frame, max 30 mins or don't bother, no one cares or notices.

peboh · 05/11/2020 10:10

I iron many things. Not my bedding, as it's a complete waste of time!
You're paying her for a job that is just time wasting. Get a new cleaning lady, or stop having your sheets ironed.

Ihaveyourback · 05/11/2020 10:13

wanna did you miss the part where I said I have been in hospital? I need 8 weeks to recover from the surgery, so I can't clean or iron anything currently!!

dixiedo · 05/11/2020 10:14

I like ironed bedding. Use the folding method thing Confused I would say ten minutes.
Often just tumble the sheets put them on still hot and no creases at all if this would be easier for you?

£90 for three beds is ridiculous. Does she clean the house too. How long is her regular ironing?!

Ihaveyourback · 05/11/2020 10:16

She is supposed to be cleaning at least some of the house, whilst she is here - downstairs pref, but she is spending the whole time ironing (and watching films)

OP posts:
felineflutter · 05/11/2020 10:17

Why don't you just send them to be washed and ironed surely that would be a lot cheaper?

Ihaveyourback · 05/11/2020 10:17

She manages to quickly vacuum at the end, and whizz the mop over the kitchen. I like her, she seems nice, but it feels like an extraordinary amount of time to me. When I iron using folding method, it takes just a few hours.

Ihaveyourback · 05/11/2020 10:18

I might do that when I can drive feline it is a good idea.

Don’t know. Never done it and never will. My mum claims she can’t sleep with unironed bedding but she seems to manage it at my house

TheDogsMother · 05/11/2020 10:20

@viques makes a good point. We have a small Airbnb and send the bedding for that out to a local laundry. King size cotton duvet cover, four pillow slips, £5.50 a set for laundering and ironing. Its collected and delivered back too.

Ihaveyourback · 05/11/2020 10:21

I really wouldn't want to give up on ironed bedding, it makes such a difference to a night's sleep, and we have always done it. One of my joys in life is getting into a freshly laundered and ironed bed.

OP posts:
TheDogsMother · 05/11/2020 10:22

Re sending it to a laundry, that price includes the sheet too.

Kazziek · 05/11/2020 10:22

You could tell her not to iron the sheets and live with them unironed for a few weeks.
I have never ironed sheets. The only things ironed now are office shirts - and they are furloughed so no more ironing Grin

Ihaveyourback · 05/11/2020 10:22

That is a great price!! Thinking to look into this now.

TheWernethWife · 05/11/2020 10:26

She's nice - I'd be nice to someone who paid me to watch tv and take the piss.

Jemma2907 · 05/11/2020 10:26

I used to do the sheets at my parents house pre-covid as they are unable to manage. It used to take one hour to iron one king size, 1 double and 1 single. I didnt iron the fitted sheets though as the creases come out anyway when stretched over the bed so that's just the covers and pillows.

Oliversmumsarmy · 05/11/2020 10:26

Buy a second or third set and send the used stuff to the launderette.
Cheaper and less hassle and probably done better

3rdNamechange · 05/11/2020 10:29

As you're paying her, act like you're the boss.
I'm sure any boss would tell you it's not acceptable to watch films whilst you're supposed to be working.
Six hours is plenty , including some ironing.

TheMandalorian · 05/11/2020 10:29

She may well be nice and lovely to have a natter with but you are not paying her to be a social companion. You are paying her to clean and iron.
You need to find a new cleaner who will get the job done and not stand around watching films on a phone.
I'm afraid you have to be firm and professional.
Linda what are you doing? I'm not paying you to stand watching films. In the first instance and then in the second instance tell her you will have to let her go if she doesn't start working. Three strikes rule I think is overly generous.
How is the rest of the cleaning? Presumably a bit slap dash?

MiriamMargo · 05/11/2020 10:31

lol she's taking the piss big time, you clearly have more money than sense

BarbaraofSeville · 05/11/2020 10:33

I would have thought that you should be able to get a full house clean and the bedding ironed in 6 hours, not just the bedding and vacuuming and mopping. Does she clean the kitchen and bathroom and do the dusting in that time?

When most people talk about having a cleaner, this seems to be for 2-3 hours a week for cleaning kitchen and bathroom, dusting, vacuuming and often other bits too, eg windows.

JillofTrades · 05/11/2020 10:34

She is clearly taking advantage of you op. That is utterly ridiculous. I have a super king size and its 15min. I also love everything ironed.
You need to forget her niceness and think of her audacity at doing this. Hope you are recovering well. Flowers
