To wonder how people have so many BNWT for sale?

Am I?

Looking on facebook selling pages and some people are selling items Brand New With Tags. Fair enough - one item that you might have purchased and just decided you didn't like it but a list of stuff?

Are they shoplifted?

FlibbertyGiblets · 04/11/2020 13:27

I think too expensive to send back/not wanting to venture back into town?

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 04/11/2020 13:29

Maybe they ordered them online and never got round to the faff of sending them back?

RoganJosh · 04/11/2020 13:31

Sometimes shoplifted I would think. You might get a clue from the range of sizes. (I can appreciate that sizes in shops do vary so it isn’t a definite.)

PegasusReturns · 04/11/2020 13:32

I’m sure there’s some stolen stuff but a lot of people (me included) but stuff and then just never get round to returning it.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/11/2020 13:33

I buy things online, they arrive, they don't fit, I think, "I'll diet my way in to it", by the time I've accepted defeat I'm out of time to return.

Nikori · 04/11/2020 13:34

I wonder this too. Why don’t they just take it back to the shop? Especially expensive electrical items.

Wornout12108 · 04/11/2020 13:35

I've been guilty of not sending back with in the time allowed, but when my girls were little I was terrible for buying items in the sale for the following season then not liking them or one grew quicker and the item no longer fitted. I would t assume shop lifted. I think if you look at the sellers history and it's always BNWT items I might be suspicious but if it's a mix of items I wouldn't, Id think they were useless like me.

Whoooootaminute · 04/11/2020 13:36

Ah - I suppose they could be items they need to return - but the prices are super cheap - much less than they would have been even in a sale?

Just wondered why - if I buy something that's not right it generally goes back to the shop for a refund/exchange.

Some sellers just do hundreds of things from one shop (often Next). They go in the sales and just buy loads of stuff, then resell it to hopefully get a profit. I saw a woman in the January sales once putting an armful of identical tops that she'd bought into a suitcase!

dazzlinghaze · 04/11/2020 13:43

I've sold loads of BNWT stuff recently. All stuff I didn't like/ didn't fit that I was too lazy to send back.

VanCleefArpels · 04/11/2020 13:47

You see people at the Boden/White Stuff/White company etc etc sales that are held in gyms and conference centres indiscriminately buying up armfuls of things which are so obviously going to be sold on eBay etc.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 04/11/2020 13:49

There are plenty of wholesalers which sell cheap branded clothing. It is often branded but sold on the condition that the retailer cuts the labels or removes the tags to prevent fraudulent returns (some wholesalers do this themselves, but many don't). These places rarely check who is a retailer and who is not.

So if the person sells a lot of BNWT clothing, there is a better than average chance (assuming no crime has been committed) that they don't want the hassle of running a business officially (customer rights, accounting etc).

Blibbyblobby · 04/11/2020 13:50

I had a friend whose business was buying cheap clothes from TK Maxx and reselling on ebay. She specialised in a certain style and knew the labels and styles that would sell - had customers all over the world.

I very rarely by in store, if it needs to go backing needs to be sent back, and I can’t just stick it on the post, it needs to go the the post office or parcel shop which is always a separate trip and never on the way to anywhere or close to where I am going. So then it doesn’t get done and it’s too late to return and the thing is in my house. I’m never going to wear it so I list it for sale for a minimal price just to get rid. I just sold a floor length fully sequinned evening gown for £15 + postage. Because I don’t want it hanging about in my wardrobe and I’ve already written off the cost by not returning it in time.
NotThiisAgaiin · 04/11/2020 13:52

I have heaps of never worn clothes (bought to slim into, or for a wedding/party that never happened) bought over a number of years. Easily a couple of hundred items. I should really get them listed on eBay.

Dartsplayer · 04/11/2020 13:53

My DC have been gifted lots of clothes for birthdays and Christmas over the years from relatives who never bother seeing them any other time so wouldn't know that they were completely not to their taste and I've left them in the wardrobe in the hope they might wear them occasionally until they've outgrown them without touching them

JorisBonson · 04/11/2020 13:54

I order tons of stuff online, don't send it back then sit on it (not literally) for ages. They I have an eBay blitz.

Not everyone is quite as diligent. I HATE shopping, I HATE going to the shops. I HATE trying clothes on.

It's the perfect storm to have clothes that are BNWT 🤦🏻‍♀️

I've mostly learnt my lesson these days, but if I end up in the situation I tend to give them to friends as it's likely to get done, whereas selling them is something that's likely to sit on the 'needs doing' list!!

I do have a friend though who buys a lot of stuff & resells it - especially primark. She doesn't put much of a 'Mark up' on it, & sells loads to people who can't get to primark etc.

flirtygirl · 04/11/2020 14:01

I buy bnwt items from ebay shops. that you can't always return or cheap items that are popular with bloggers to resale on ebay. Also items that I liked when I bought them but no longer like or I got too fat for.

I always have lots of bnwt items for sale on ebay and none of them are shoplifted.

Mj2196 · 04/11/2020 14:03

I have a serious shopping problem that I am trying to get under control, I have done a huge clear-out during lock down and the amount of clothes that have tags still on is shocking and embarrassing. So I am selling on as its just too much just to donate to charity and I can get some money back that I have spent on them. I need to stop the mindless buying just because its cheap and now if I buy something on line, as soon as it comes in try it on and turn ASAP if doesn't fit or suit .

Badbadbunny · 04/11/2020 14:08

Shops sell off out-of-season stock, returns etc through wholesale channels rather than sell through their shops. Clearance stocks are easier to get hold of than ever via internet wholesalers etc.

There are also people whose "business" is to buy things when reduced in sales etc, store them for a few months, and then sell them when they're no longer on sale or even in the shops at all.

I've no doubt some will be shoplifted, but probably most will have been bought legitimately.

chipsandgin · 04/11/2020 14:10

I regularly miss the deadline for sending stuff back Blush I’m currently stuck with loads of school uniform stuff from the beginning of December which didn’t fit. Also sometimes the cost of sending it back makes it not worthwhile. If and when I do get round to eBaying it I’ll probably have a pile of stuff to do at once. So it’s disorganisation mainly! Id always presume that’s the case with most people.

GrapevineFires · 04/11/2020 14:11

I am definitely guilty of overbuying. I buy too much crap in sales that I think I like and then change my mind far too late. I also can't be bothered to return things so sell them on when I'm having a clear out.

I'm actually trying to purge my make up at the moment as I get really carried away (I've been guilty of buying Charlotte Tilbury mystery boxes) and then find I don't actually use the stuff so figure it's better to get some of the money back to spend on other stupid purchases
