Am I?

Looking on facebook selling pages and some people are selling items Brand New With Tags. Fair enough - one item that you might have purchased and just decided you didn't like it but a list of stuff?

Are they shoplifted?

Knee jerk impulse buys, no idea what suits them or in denial re their size . I'm going off friends who have mountains of stuff they can't be arsed to return. They refuse to charity shop them & get annoyed they don't get near original price when Ebayed.

FraughtwithGin · 04/11/2020 16:17

I have a few things (mostly silk dresses and pairs of shoes) that were bought online for occasions that either didn't happen or I was away for work and missed the deadline for returning them.
As I am currently in the process of de-cluttering I will put some items online and see if there are any takers.

workplacehelp · 04/11/2020 16:19

I have so many items still with tags from the years gone by. It's usually that I like something, don't try it on in the shop, I love it but convince myself I'll lose weight to fit into it better and never do...

ooooo silk dresses you say
theemmadilemma · 04/11/2020 16:23

I'm stupid and lazy. I've previously had a terrible habit of ordering stuff, including 2 sizes and then not getting round to sending stuff back. I'm moving and cleared the attic and found bags of stuff in different sizes (from different times over the last few years). Some were even unopened in sealed bags.

Fucking shameful.

onemouseplace · 04/11/2020 16:25

I think some people do go to sample sales for popular brands (like Hush etc) and buy as much as they can to sell on. Some people just buy stuff and forget about it, don't get round to returning it, never slim into it. And I do think some is shoplifted as well.

Teakind · 04/11/2020 16:27

It never occurred to me they could be stolen but clearly a lot of people agree with you.

I have a few clothes BNWT as I either didn’t wear them or they were gifts that I didn’t like (mostly kids clothes).

NotMeekNotObedient · 04/11/2020 16:29

I think buying stuff and not wearing it happens to modt people. My mum had about 7 dresses in her wardrobe like this when she died - she'd ordered from John Lewis a few styles for an event and ended up keeping more than one - some didn't get worn. Got a tiny percent of the rrp but better than nothing.

LuaDipa · 04/11/2020 16:29

I had a thing for designer kids clothes when my dc would wear what I liked were smaller. My dm and dsis were the same and used to buy them lots of gorgeous clothing. Sometimes I ended up with duplicates, sometimes I forgot outfits before they outgrew them, sometimes they had so many clothes that they never got to wear certain pieces. All of it was bought and paid for, they just had far too many clothes.

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 04/11/2020 16:31

There are auction houses who sell if bags and bags of unwanted shop stock. People buy it unseen for like £5 a bag and then eBay it. My BIL does this.

FrappuccinoFan · 04/11/2020 16:31

The return period could easily elapse if you’re busy. I always miss out on online returns as I can’t be bothered going to the post office. I used to work full time in fashion retail so standing around in long queue at a retail store is my idea of hell frankly.

Also it could be that the person bought something out of season and were intending to wear it at purchase but the weather doesn’t permit eg it’s been freezing recently so a summer dress bought in September would have been unsuitable to wear out, and would be outside of the returns period by now. I don’t take the tags off clothes until I first wear them.

FrappuccinoFan · 04/11/2020 16:40

I used to work at TOPSHOP as a teen and was obsessed with the latest trends. I had a long list of items I wanted to buy and would immediately snap them up even if the size was a bit off as I would get a discount. We used to get praised for being “fashion role models” you see (🙄)

Returns were a faff as staff have to return items directly to their own manager.

I still have lots of old good condition TOPSHOP items, maybe 1-2 new with tags on, simply because I had SO much clothes at the time after impulse buying.

Laufeythejust · 04/11/2020 16:47

I’m terrible for this. I can never be bothered returning things and just think maybe one day I will wear them. I’ve lost a lot of weight and had a sort through and had 5 dresses with tags on, 2 pairs of shoes and a couple of tops. What a waste of money. They’re now in a pile waiting to go to the charity shop.

FrappuccinoFan · 04/11/2020 16:51

It’s possible anything sold online has been stolen - I would base it upon the seller’s other items. Ask if they have a receipt if you’re worried and it’s high value.

My store had security tags on everything so shoplifting wasn’t a major concern. Opportunistic thieves would rip the security tags off, so any damage or dodgy resewing on the item could be a giveaway?

Sonmi451 · 04/11/2020 16:54

I bought one item thinking it was a child's age 8-10, but it turned out it was adult size 8-10. It was a birthday gift, so it was out of the return period by the time the gift was opened

I bought another item as a Christmas gift for DS, but then his Grandmother took him out for the day and bought him the same thing (different brand). I knew the thing I bought was in short supply and people were trying to get hold of them, so I sold it.

Where I live, postage cost is always high, so often it's cheaper to just keep it & try and sell it, rather than return it.

HundredMilesAnHour · 04/11/2020 17:01

I was just at the Liberty sample sale this afternoon. Except it wasn't samples, it was current season stock (and still for sale at full price on their website). But the sale had up to 80% off (for example, large silk scarves for £40 instead of £195). So expect an increase in Liberty BNWT items on Ebay in the next few days. Always seems to happen after a 'sample' sale.

Jux · 04/11/2020 17:08

Fell off the back of a lorry

Grumpyscot92 · 04/11/2020 17:22

Gifts. Everything my MIL has ever bought me has been given away or sold, BNWT 😂

Whoooootaminute · 04/11/2020 18:34

The one that made me think was today - but the clothes were all in the same size - so unlikely to be shoplifted for selling on I guess. She was selling them at £3/£4 each so perhaps they were from a big sale or something?

It's interesting to see what tat some sell on the facebook selling pages. I have sold a lot of stuff which I would have either charity shopped or binned.

OP posts:
cazisalittlenuts · 04/11/2020 18:42

Sending a load of stuff to charity shop brand new with tags, including a brand new unworn pair of shoes. Bought it all for my mum as she needed new clothes while she was in hospital but then her health rapidly deteriorated before she could wear any of it.

I dont have the energy to fb or ebay it. Not all bnwt is shoplifter, sometimes theres a reason.

Livelovebehappy · 04/11/2020 18:53

I have some things with tags which I’ve bought, which were ordered online, but are too small. I really like them though, so hope I’ll lose a few extra pounds to get into them. Joe Browns are notoriously small fitting, but I take a certain size and won’t buy a size bigger - mad I know. But two items I’ve put on eBay recently from Joe Browns, with tags, to make room for my current online retail therapy addiction!

VinylDetective · 04/11/2020 18:55

Bought in the sales and sold for a profit. John Lewis was selling Toast at 70% off over the summer.

sunshineandshowers21 · 04/11/2020 18:58

a girl i know is always selling stuff bnwt because she clears the rails in tk maxx of designer items and sells them on. except she doesn’t sell them on because she doubles the price so she’s got an entire bedroom filled with piles of clothes that she can’t sell. she never learns either. she still buys more even when she hasn’t sold the last lot.

ElephantsAlltheWayDown · 04/11/2020 18:59

Loads of people are compulsive shoppers. My mom's walk in closet looks like a tiny department store, loads of stuff with tags, that she then pawns off on me. Confused

I'm sure sometimes it's shoplifted, but I imagine compulsive shoppers are more common than we think.

FrappuccinoFan · 04/11/2020 19:23

but the clothes were all in the same size - so unlikely to be shoplifted for selling on I guess.

Not necessarily. “Professional” shoplifters know what to target for profit, ie the popular styles/sizes. Especially if they used to work for the company.
