To wonder how people have so many BNWT for sale?

Am I?

Looking on facebook selling pages and some people are selling items Brand New With Tags. Fair enough - one item that you might have purchased and just decided you didn't like it but a list of stuff?

Are they shoplifted?

OP posts:

I sell quite a few things BNWT. I love fashion, clothing, bags and shoes and used to have a terrible buying habit which I’ve moderated to a great extent. Have still had lots of things in wardrobe unused for a few years and I’m selling them off now because in some cases I’ll probably never fit them (used to be a size or two smaller), or I’ve decided I no longer have to have them.

People also sometimes buy stock in further reductions/sales and then sell on for more to make a profit.

PigletJohn · 04/11/2020 14:22

Some of them might be stolen, but I think a number of shops are clearing their stock because they are going bust or they have not paid rent and the landlord is going to repossess (or already has)

I was looking for an overcoat and saw people selling numerous sizes BNWT of the same make, which must be a shop or warehouse clearance.

One retailer has an obvious ebay presence and is selling there as well as from their own website.

I am really guilty of this OP..I buy my dd far too much.I wash and press new things and hang em up in her wardrobe and forget about them, then they are too small...I appreciate this looks bad but when she is in uniform all week she doesnt get to wear things as much.I am one of those parents though and I see stuff and think oohh that would look nice and buy stuff needlessly...sorry! I am trying to cut down but there is so much cute stuff out there. Last year I listed 10 new coats bnwt she only wore 3 all year my dh shook his head and reminded me how stupid I was,

Noitjustwontdo · 04/11/2020 14:25

My guess is it’s too much hassle to return or they lost the returns label or it’s been too long so they can’t return it.

notacooldad · 04/11/2020 14:29

My sister sells a lot of BTWT
She buys too much from The Trafford Centre but it is too far to go back to return one or two items. ( why she doesn't try it on there I'll never know- pre covid)
She buys with the intention of losing weight and it never happens
When she buys on line she forgets the return by date.
She doesn't shoplift!

amusedbush · 04/11/2020 14:31

@FourTeaFallOut

I buy things online, they arrive, they don't fit, I think, "I'll diet my way in to it", by the time I've accepted defeat I'm out of time to return.
This is exactly how I ended up with a pile of BNWT clothes. I went through a phase of seeing something I really liked but I'd buy it two sizes too small with brilliant intentions of slimming into them. That never happened and they just hung in my wardrobe.
BingeOnChocolate · 04/11/2020 14:40

I brought loads just before the first lockdown for work only to then loose weight that they don't fit. I tend not to take tags off until I've worn

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/11/2020 14:40

I would think most of it is innocent never returned items. I just sold a pair of boots that have been sitting around since 2014. Brand new in box (walking boots so not really fashion) bought "on sale" for my DSs to grow into and then outgrown without being worn.

If something isn't free to return it's often just easier and potentially cheaper to sell instead. Item cost £20, return post is £4 plus trip to post office, you could sell for £17 and still be better off.

thevassal · 04/11/2020 14:46

In my experience a lot of the stuff has actually been worn (can tell by the strong smell of detergent!) and the seller has either worn them with the tag in once or twice or reattached the tag, either by just squeezing it back through or they work in a shop or buy a tagging machine cheap off eBay!

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 04/11/2020 14:51

Ugh that’s horrible.

I don’t sell on fb (too much hassle). I’m proud to say that every single BNWT item I’ve sold has been in excellent, unused condition and I’ve got 100% positive feedback. Even my used items, which I also sell, are in excellent used condition and often show no signs of wear at all.

FurrySlipperBoots · 04/11/2020 15:01

I'm selling off a collection of 'Brand new with tags' bits at the moment! A lot of them are gifts others have bought me that aren't to my taste. Also I have a few bits and pieces that I bought myself but lost the receipt/they were sale items and non returnable, that I went on to think better of.

Does anyone want some FatFace knickers BTW? Brand new with tags! 4 pairs of them, size 14 - yours for £5 + postage!

DoTheMaccaroni · 04/11/2020 15:17

I know at least a few people from fb selling groups who buy loooads in sales and then sell for the RRP or a bit less to make a little profit.

DoTheMaccaroni · 04/11/2020 15:18

Also when it comes to kids clothing, people buy and then stash and either forget about them until it’s too late or they just decide they don’t like them anymore. OR they just sell because they need the money.

Hardbackwriter · 04/11/2020 15:19

I agree that there are legitimate reasons why this happens sometimes but I think it's naive to think that a lot of that stuff isn't stolen. As the OP says, some people have huge amounts of this stuff, on a regular basis, and being sold well below shop prices - it might not all be dodgy but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

TiersTiersTiers · 04/11/2020 15:20

I have donated some BNWT items to charity recently. I've stupidly purchased in the hope/wish I might lose weight then didn't and they have sat in the wardrobe reminding me of my intention/failure...

Hmm
XiCi · 04/11/2020 15:27

If you have a good eye and know what sells well you can, as pp have said, buy in sales etc and sell for a profit. My friend makes a minimum of an extra grand a month on top of her normal salary for very little effort buying from Primark and selling on, mostly to an overseas market

AlwaysLatte · 04/11/2020 15:29

I never get around to taking things back if they're unsuitable - usually end up in the charity bag. Not very organised, I know!

Hope she’s declaring that for tax purposes!
snugglepuff · 04/11/2020 15:37

I have half a wardrobe full of clothes with the tags still on. Usually bc I'm too busy to remember to send / bring them back. Or I'll tell myself I'll loose a few pounds and I never ever do! Then after about 18 months I stick them on fb market place.

XiCi · 04/11/2020 15:39

Absolutely no idea whatsoever Feminist10101.
Never occurred to me to grill her on her tax return

Ori3 · 04/11/2020 15:54

@XiCi

I'm clearly showing my ignorance here but why don't the people buying her Primark items buy direct from Primark themselves? It's a good business idea for sure if it works but don't get this bit?!

allfurcoatnoknickers · 04/11/2020 15:54

I've sold/given away unwanted gifts before - BNWT. I'll actually shortly be flogging a BNWT pram suit from Boden my DM just bought for DS...in a size too small Confused.

Some items are quire desirable and sell out fast
Not every primark stocks every item.

I’d have to mention needing to register as self employed for her sideline, as no way to argue that’s a hobby.

Having had a random VAT investigation for my company, there’s no way I’d want to do anything that prompted a HMRC investigation!

Impulse buys on my part, or things I didn't return, or things I forgot I bought.
