DD lesbian music (lightheated)

StevieNicksister · 04/11/2020 11:49

So. My lovely daughter is 14.

She has always dropped hints of questioning her sexuality, to be honest i just thought it was a phase so i let her get on with it.
She had a crush on a boy a while ago but she said she liked him because he looked very very feminine and it never went further than liking to look at him, which i understand and didnt give much thought.

She is now getting into music, specifically classic rock which is undeniably full of hot men!! Blush
i half expected her to message me one day and tell me how she likes David Bowie/George Harrison/Bob Dylan etc because i certainly did Grin

But no... My husband just had to introduce her to Patti Smith out of all people!!!! Shock
And now i have to listen to her gritty, nails on a chalkboard voice every day...
And now i have an out and proud lesbian daughter!! Shock [grın]
Apparantly the ´beautiful´ Patti has finally helped her realize that she is, after all, a lesbian.

Cue DH showing her KD fucking LANG!!!
if i have to hear bloody blummin miss shitaleine again i will combust!!!!

i am a straight woman in my fourties and no way do i have any prejudice against gay women but no way do i want redondo beach playing in my car via bluetooth [grın]

I had an almost spiritual experience watching Patti live. Your daughter sounds ace. I also find Patti beautiful although im not a lesbian. I cant totally see why she loves her.

Gwynfluff · 04/11/2020 19:12

Anna Calvi
Kate tempest
Courtney Barnett
Pillow queens
Marika Hackman
Christine and the Queens

All lesbian or bisexual and currently making music. Patti Smith is straight as far as I am aware.

Literallynoidea · 04/11/2020 19:17

OP you're getting so much grief. I just wanted to say I feel for you

SockDrawer · 04/11/2020 19:27

@DrDavidBanner are you seriously saying that suggestions for other musicians that the OP’s DD might also like is homophobic?

Literallynoidea · 04/11/2020 19:29

Very well said @Covidasaurus

ImFree2doasiwant · 04/11/2020 19:33

Patti Smith isn't a lesbian though is she? (Or have I just made a huge mistake???)

DrDavidBanner · 04/11/2020 20:07

Im say @SockDrawer that lesbians can listen to whatever tf they want to and that 14 year olds don't need their mothers picking their playlist for them.

I'm glad OP is close to her daughter but sometimes you need to unclench and unfortunately listen to shite music in the car for a few years

SockDrawer · 04/11/2020 20:15

Literally the only person clenched here is you @DrDavidBanner 😂

Of course lesbians can listen to whatever they want to, no one is saying they can’t.

I think you need to go back and read @CodenameVillanelle and @Covidasaurus posts.

Dowermouse · 04/11/2020 20:22

Oh god, now I have the Indigo Girls on loop. Please, no, save me.

ButtWormHole · 04/11/2020 20:25

Not entirely sure why you had to bring your DD’s sexuality into it when you could have just complained about the music she listens to. Are you normally this supportive of big life events for her?

Beamur · 04/11/2020 20:38

Pretty much all the teen girls I know and 20 something's love LOVE Hamilton.

Holothane · 04/11/2020 20:39

I’ve never fancied David Bowie.

KizzyWayfarer · 04/11/2020 20:49

Patti Smith is awesome and if I were a lesbian I would totally fancy her. David Bowie does nothing for me though I do like his music.

steppemum · 04/11/2020 22:06

I thought that the “into musicals” cliché was gay men, not lesbians so much?

I love Hamilton, she’d be welcome round my house for a cabinet rap battle any time.

you're probably right. I just tease her about her music because I get bombarded with it A LOT and she has such, umm, interesting taste Grin

She knows all the lyrics to all the songs in all the musicals you have ever heard of.

And the sea shanties of course.

(I mean sea shanties. SEA SHANTIES. Where did that even come from???Grin)

AllDaBoats · 04/11/2020 22:24

Patti Smith is not a lesbian

Her music and image is definitely empowering and sexy so I can see why your DD would like her.

I discovered Patti smith when I was about 14 (many years ago now) and she definitely broadened by interests /helped me grow up. Hard to explain.

I still love her music

There are definitely worse role models your dd could have.

Follow her on insta she's so sincere and cute !!

FlemCandango · 04/11/2020 22:33

Try her with 10'00 maniacs, Belly, Mazzy Star, PJ Harvey, and riot girrl bands. If she likes the folkier end introduce Sandy Denny

Not lesbian necessarily but strong female voices. I can listen to Sandy on repeat.

Leftrightatthelights · 04/11/2020 22:36

Patti Smith is not a lesbian. If she was, if she wasn’t who cares. Sexuality is not the music you make and vice versa

Much of this thread is homophobic. Grow up

YouUnlockedTheGateAnd · 04/11/2020 22:49

Ooo

For red hot female rockers you need a bit of Gianna Naninni in your life.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=fqKXubPjC6Q

Im in Love

DressesWithPocketsRockMyWorld · 04/11/2020 22:58

Giant giant LOL! Mine is 15 and came out as gay a while ago but then said she was bi cos a fit boy messaged her.

And then I got her to watch Heathers and when Christian Slater came on screen she shouted WHO IS THAT OH MY GOD HE IS FIT.

Obviously verrrrrrry light hearted

Ericaequites · 04/11/2020 22:59

Chris Williamson, Lucie Blue Tremblay, Odetta, Sweet Honey In the Rock, and Joan Armatrang are some other suggestions.

Gwynfluff · 05/11/2020 06:57

@AllDaBoats I follow Patti on Instagram - she’s awesome!

Bluesheep8 · 05/11/2020 07:30

Sorry but I just don't see what musical taste has got to do with sexual preference. I couldn't give two hoots about the sexuality of the person performing the music I like.

YouUnlockedTheGateAnd · 05/11/2020 18:10

Blue. Are you a young lesbian lacking in role models/people like you though?

Im shall we say... quite butch in appearance whilst not beinggay. I can’t tell you how less ‘odd‘ for want of a better word I feel seeing femal e actors and artists (inc musicians) who dress and present themselves more like i do.

I would guess that as a gay teen it must also be very nice to hear love songs about women sung by women. Reassuring that you aren’t alone in your feelings.

Bluesheep8 · 06/11/2020 06:51

youunlocked that is a really good point, very well made.

StarlightLady · 06/11/2020 07:18

OP, l think your husband has been brilliant with this!
