So. My lovely daughter is 14.

She has always dropped hints of questioning her sexuality, to be honest i just thought it was a phase so i let her get on with it.
She had a crush on a boy a while ago but she said she liked him because he looked very very feminine and it never went further than liking to look at him, which i understand and didnt give much thought.

She is now getting into music, specifically classic rock which is undeniably full of hot men!! Blush
i half expected her to message me one day and tell me how she likes David Bowie/George Harrison/Bob Dylan etc because i certainly did Grin

But no... My husband just had to introduce her to Patti Smith out of all people!!!! Shock
And now i have to listen to her gritty, nails on a chalkboard voice every day...
And now i have an out and proud lesbian daughter!! Shock [grın]
Apparantly the ´beautiful´ Patti has finally helped her realize that she is, after all, a lesbian.

Cue DH showing her KD fucking LANG!!!
if i have to hear bloody blummin miss shitaleine again i will combust!!!!

i am a straight woman in my fourties and no way do i have any prejudice against gay women but no way do i want redondo beach playing in my car via bluetooth [grın]

AIBU?

ladycarlotta · 04/11/2020 13:22

is Patti Smith 'lesbian music'?

enjoyingscience · 04/11/2020 13:23

Plenty of excellent lesbian music out there, although as a non lesbian I’m now worried that I should have applied for the appropriate permit to listen to it all. Get her listening to Anna Calvi. She’s a genius. Gossip are also great, Self Esteem (she’s bi, but I’m sure that’s allowable).

SmashingInAthleticWear · 04/11/2020 13:24

Would you seriously prefer she was into the absolute shite that populates the charts these days?!

JurassicShay · 04/11/2020 13:24

Yes to Tracy chapman!

Show her vicci Martinez & Emily tarver on YouTube. They're both from orange is the new black and are now together. Vicci was on the voice USA too.
They only have 5/6 songs but I love every single one. (vicci is hot & Im not a lesbian)

StevieNicksister · 04/11/2020 13:24

@ladycarlotta Well she is a lesbian isnt she? i assumed so because of redondo beach.

SmashingInAthleticWear · 04/11/2020 13:26

Redondo Beach is about her sister.

grapewine · 04/11/2020 13:28

You're being so unreasonable for your Patti Smith hate 😮

But I also suggest: Chapman and Mitchell.

StevieNicksister · 04/11/2020 13:31

How am i beıng u? She doesnt seem like a likeable person to be honest. bit of a weirdo.

OP posts:
ravenmum · 04/11/2020 13:34

Whereas David Bowie was just like the typical boy next door.

YukoandHiro · 04/11/2020 13:34

@StevieNicksister Bowie WAS hot in labyrinth, yes.... but in hindsight the Goblin King was also a massive predatory sex pest. Details, details.

Beamur · 04/11/2020 13:37

Girl in red is a code amongst this age group!
She might also like Chloe Moriondo, Tessa Violet, Mxmtoon and Cavetown. All quite sweet, low fi, indie sounding. Easier on the ears.

StevieNicksister · 04/11/2020 13:53

Thanks for suggestions x

introduce her to Fit for Rivals :)

steppemum · 04/11/2020 14:27

think yourself lucky.

dd is out and proud and massively into musicals (I keep telling her she is cliche and she just sings all the words to the raps in Hamilton at top speed - yes she knoews them ALL)

She recently bought a record playing and is now into LPs. (mind you guns and roses features highly, not sure if she is on track there Wink)

but the latest is that she has just discovered sea shanties.

I rest my case. A bit of Patti Smith would be a light relief

Zilla1 · 04/11/2020 14:41

Steppen, sea shanties is/are the best thing I've heard today. Thank you.

steppemum · 04/11/2020 14:56

@Zilla1

Steppen, sea shanties is/are the best thing I've heard today. Thank you.
I have to confess they are quite something! All done really well and a capella, and really NOT what you would expect a 15 year old girl to be into.

I do sometimes wonder whose child she is....

Covidasaurus · 04/11/2020 16:20

Omg some of these posts!

There has always been gay music as anyone who has attended a gay nightclub can tell you. Does no one remember Erasure?!?

Young people look for role models that are in their “tribe”. Young lesbians don’t necessarily want to listen to women singing love songs about men all the time. They want to listen to songs that resonate with their own feelings.

Why is that remotely hard to understand? HmmHmm

CodenameVillanelle · 04/11/2020 17:10

@DrDavidBanner

This is a fucking wierd thread. I mean I'll admit I'm not a lesbian so I didn't realise lesbians had an appoved playlist, but then I wasn't picking out what music my teenagers were supposed to listen to either.
The kid has come out as a lesbian and is enjoying listening to some music by lesbians. It's good for young lesbians to see lesbians being cool and awesome. Rock stars are the coolest and it's a good thing if this young lesbian is introduced to some badass lesbian rockstars. Why is that so confusing to you? Do you think young lesbians are so rich in role models that they don't need any help to find some?
EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 04/11/2020 17:13

I read her autobiography like a week ago. Patti Smith is not gay Confused

MrsBeltane · 04/11/2020 17:17

I'm a straight woman in my 50's. You're listing all my favourite artists. What's wrong with Patti Smith???
She's brilliant, should've been to see her this week but Covid stopped that.

SidneyCasing · 04/11/2020 17:23

Baffled at this entire post tbh. She tried to talk to you about her sexuality but you just assumed it was a phase? She listened to rock music so you expected her to fancy David Bowie?

SockDrawer · 04/11/2020 17:45

I mean I'll admit I'm not a lesbian

@DrDavidBanner maybe you don’t get it then. That’s absolutely fine: But there’s no need to shit on people just because you have a different life experience.

CheetasOnFajitas · 04/11/2020 18:39

I thought that the “into musicals” cliché was gay men, not lesbians so much?

I love Hamilton, she’d be welcome round my house for a cabinet rap battle any time.

Right because a thread for "Lesbian Music" is not homophobic in the slightest Hmm
