To think expensive facial moisturiser is no better than cheaper variety? Any recommendations?

It’s my friends birthday and I was wondering whether to get her a more expensive facial moisturiser/serum product for everyday use.

A- I’m not sure where to begin?

B- part of me thinks it’s a waste as a bottle of £50 moisturiser will be no bette than a £8 bottle? You know for wrinkles and all....

What are your thoughts?

I’ve had testers of the more expensive ones and they smell really nice. Fresh, clinical and clean smelling as oppose to genetic overbearing smell the the cheaper ones seem to smell like.

She’s 41 on her bday. No more than £50 maximum.

Thanks

I think it’s tricky to get skincare for someone else right - I’d get her a £50 voucher for space nk and then she can ask a sales assistant for advice - they know their stuff!

It’s totally dependent on the skin type. Personally not something I’d buy for someone else.

I bought the Vitamin Glow range from Lidl a while back and it's bloody lovely stuff. Of course it's out of stock now but there's always someone with it on Amazon or eBay.

Frankola · 03/11/2020 20:21

It depends on skin type. I havent found that to be the case unfortunately.

I'm a Clarins girl. Its great quality and its good for sensitive skin.

BeepBoopBop · 03/11/2020 20:22

Aldi has a caviar creme, which is fab and cheap as chips. Other than that, I am a huge fan of Clarins.

Pukkatea · 03/11/2020 20:23

Stuff without perfume in is usually better for your skin, regardless of price, but yes I'd get her a voucher to choose her own.

Marks and Spencer. Pure. Day cream £16

BessieSurtees · 03/11/2020 20:24

If you want a gift rather than voucher I would lean towards an overnight cream or serum, some moisturisers don’t go with some make up. I’m not sure of the science think it’s something to do with oil and water based. It’s easy to get a day moisturiser wrong, my skin is always better with an overnight potion.

SionnachRua · 03/11/2020 20:25

Yeah I wouldn't buy a face moisturizer as a present tbh, people can be very selective in what they like. I am La Roche Posay Hydreane all the way, for example.

Would be more likely to buy a body moisturizer tbh, more of a crowd pleaser!

Al1langdownthecleghole · 03/11/2020 20:27

Astral all the way,

Get away you big Aldi spenders.

goose1964 · 03/11/2020 20:28

I'd be careful about getting someone moisturiser unless they've indicated that they'd like it. Otherwise you're telling them they're getting old.

PawPawNoodle · 03/11/2020 20:35

I've progressively got worse with my spending on moisturiser. At the moment I won't put anything other than Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream on my face.

Springcatkin · 03/11/2020 20:36

You could try a really nice hand cream instead? I love the vaseline intensive care. Great with all this hand washing ....

Rachetine · 03/11/2020 20:37

Best cream I’ve ever used is night a mins by origins. Amazing stuff, and can really see/feel a difference.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 03/11/2020 20:38

Liz Earle is good as a luxury brand that's not OTT pricewise, lovely packaging. uk.lizearle.com/
although I've recently swapped the cleanse and polish for superdrug's vitamin E range equivalent.

yvanka · 03/11/2020 20:43

Has she said that's what she wants? I am very picky about skincare and my skin is very sensitive, if someone gave me a random moisturiser I probably wouldn't use it.

yvanka · 03/11/2020 20:43

Has she said that's what ah? I am very picky about skincare and my skin is very sensitive, if someone gave me a random one I probably wouldn't use it.

yvanka · 03/11/2020 20:44

Has she expressed a desire for a new moisturiser? I am very picky about skincare and my skin is very sensitive, if someone gave me a random one I probably wouldn't use it.

Mumtumwobble · 03/11/2020 20:48

I think you’re better off spending your money in serums/treatments rather than moisturiser. I think you can get away with a fairly standard moisturiser if you’re using good serums/treatments. Caroline Hirons’ blog currently has discount codes for some lovely brands like Sunday Riley.

purplecorkheart · 03/11/2020 20:51

I agree with you that expensive does not mean good for every individual. I was given an pot of Creme de Mere moisturiser (gift). I found it heavy/itchy/uncomfortable and did not suit my dry skin. I have used some small/local/ midrange brands that have been incredible. My Grandmother had the best skin I ever saw. She used Ponds cold cream that she picked up with her weekly shop.

lioncitygirl · 03/11/2020 20:59

I disagree - some expensive ones I use you can absolutely tell the difference when used in the long run. I’ve had cheap ones where there have been no results or a complete breakout.

But also - I wouldn’t get a friend something so personal unless you know her skin type etc.

I once worked in a popular and global cosmetic company head office abroad, doing training, and knew various heads of department for the country. They told me that, for example, an £80 face cream is definitely much better than an £8 one, but it is nowhere near 10 times better. There is a much bigger margin built into the price and the quality isn't THAT much better. I used to get some freebies from them and they were hand picked for my problematic skin! Felt really nice to apply but my skin was no better looking after long term use than it is with my normal cheap products!

A voucher for her to choose something herself is a lovely gift.

Aldi's Caviar range is really ver good, particularly the night cream.
