To think expensive facial moisturiser is no better than cheaper variety? Any recommendations?

It’s my friends birthday and I was wondering whether to get her a more expensive facial moisturiser/serum product for everyday use.

A- I’m not sure where to begin?

B- part of me thinks it’s a waste as a bottle of £50 moisturiser will be no bette than a £8 bottle? You know for wrinkles and all....

What are your thoughts?

I’ve had testers of the more expensive ones and they smell really nice. Fresh, clinical and clean smelling as oppose to genetic overbearing smell the the cheaper ones seem to smell like.

She’s 41 on her bday. No more than £50 maximum.

Thanks

Great advice ladies thank you.

I take on board the moisturiser no no for the day as it might not suit her make up

I could get her a voucher, that’s probably best, but for what brand? 😬

Definitely Liz Earle

I may be missing something but if someone gave me skincare products as a birthday present I'd be Hmm so you think I'm a hag? Sort of thing I'd have expected from my DM "You're very pale, don't you think you should use some rouge"?

The only time I use the expensive shit stuff is whiling away time in an airport and testing all the duty free.

Get her a Sanctuary gift bag from Boots (3 4 2) And a Spa (or even Spar) voucher.

I can understand what you mean but she’s mentioned a few times she’s thinking of investing in a more expensive facial moisturiser. If I didn’t know that I definitely wouldn’t get her it 😂

The only thing that’s ever properly moisturised my face rather than just sitting on top of my skin is the Superdrug own brand version of e45, it’s incredible. Doesn’t make for a very impressive present though Grin

SionnachRua · 03/11/2020 23:36

If you're getting her a voucher I'd get one for something like Cult Beauty - one of the big retailers that has lots of brands. You're not locking her into one specific brand then.

WellTidy · 03/11/2020 23:44

this Estée Lauder gift set is very good value for £45. I really rate day wear as a day moisturiser and also the night cream, and the set contains 10ml advanced night repair serum which is fab and a cleanser that lasts forever as you only need a tiny dab (it foams up).

RumJerrySailorRum · 03/11/2020 23:51

Clinique DDML is the best moisturiser imo.

I've been using it for about 30 years now and I'm 45.

I wouldn't buy a specific voucher but a Boots one for example, so she can go try all the samples and use the voucher for her favourite.

Elizaaa · 04/11/2020 00:03

Blue tub Nivea is one ingredient away from creme de la mer apparently.

Same here and for about the same length of time. Not ridiculously expensive and with my sensitive skin, it’s perfect. Light, sinks in, great base for makeup and always gives a nice fresh feeling.
Chuggington2 · 04/11/2020 02:51

What @blackfriars said. Skincare is so personal. And I think it depends on the price v effectiveness issue. Some brands are worth their salt..some aren’t. It’s a bit trial and a error really.

Lovely and thoughtful of you though. I’d be over the moon if someone bought me a Space NK voucher.

Anordinarymum · 04/11/2020 02:59

Or just do a bank transfer and let her buy the gift online as the shops won't be open now ?

Dermalogica is good. I use it when my son buys it for me for Christmas. Otherwise I use No7 protect and perfect advanced serum

Or Aveeno daily care for babies.. which is way cheaper but nice

acquiescence · 04/11/2020 03:12

I love Elemis. There is a fab offer for a package on QVC at the moment which contains their marine cream which is really rich night cream.

Would be more likely to buy a body moisturizer tbh, more of a crowd pleaser

I've never used body moisturiser in my entire life. I regift or charity shop all body lotion I am given.

Clinique DDML is the best moisturiser imo

I disagree as it doesn't include sunscreen, therefore lacks the main benefit of using moisturiser as an anti aging product.

The voucher sounds like the best plan. Do Cult Beauty or other online retailers offer consultations to help choose the appropriate product?

I find those in shower moisturisers are excellent and don't leave your skin greasy like body lotions do
seayork2020 · 04/11/2020 03:42

This is not something I would do unless I knew what the person wanted or at least brand

But I like Loccitane brand

BullBailey · 04/11/2020 05:47

I e had Liz Earle and Clarins and neither were great.

I currently use Lush and love it. But I’ve also enjoyed one from Lidl for a quid. It was too thick for me, but it did a good job

BullBailey · 04/11/2020 05:49

@BarbaraofSeville lots of skincare experts say moisturiser SHOULDNT include SPF, that should be applied separately after. I think it’s not as effective? Not sure

kowari · 04/11/2020 05:57

I clicked on this hoping for recommendations for something cheaper than Olay Grin (I pay £3.50 at Wilko and hate it every time).

BessieSurtees · 04/11/2020 06:21

Oh @acquiescence I’ve just ordered that for myself, 😊 Thank you.

pinkbalconyrailing · 04/11/2020 06:27

moisturisers are all much of a muchness imo.
masks and serums and sunscreen is where it is.

get a serum kit, maybe 'the ordinary' no brainer kit? and a nice facial sunscreen?

cologne4711 · 04/11/2020 07:31

I'd get a nice shower gel and hand soap set. Everyone can use that, even if it's not necessarily the scent you'd choose, you can use it.

Not hand cream. Everyone gives you hand cream. Or body lotion. How much can one person use?

Agree facial moisturiser is too personal.

Failing that, wine and chocolate doesn't go amiss unless you know they don't drink alcohol or are on a diet,
