She's going to be 65, and is one of the most difficult people to buy for - I asked her - 'nothing really, maybe just a voucher' - but I know she'll go into a huff. She lives alone and is not into fancy things. No hats, scarfs, pyjamas, flowers, chocolates, booze, soaps etc....DH has not got a clue either (he never does - he once gave me a laptop case for Christmas, another time he bought me a canvas bag from French Connection men - he'd shown me it and I said its ok, thought he was getting it for himself...)

Curled up with a Good Book Tote bag

and if she likes historical family sagas, you could put a couple of books in from Judith Barrow's Howarth family series, published by Honno A Hundred Tiny Threads

and a voucher!

Dinosforall · 04/11/2020 17:17

Grin at some of these comments. I am under 40 and have a pillow for reading in bed and I like jigsaws...not People's Friend though.

You can get cream tea, gin tasting all sorts delivered where we are?

lifestooshort123 · 04/11/2020 17:32

Having RTWT - diabetic and no public transport - a lot of these suggestions are ridiculous. She's asked for a voucher so get her son to ask her which one and he can get it for her. I'm late 60s and I don't want gifts any more but to choose a treat for myself is lovely. If you feel it's too impersonal then get an orchid to put with it.

For my aunt’s 80th, we all wrote limericks about her. It took quite a lot of effort but she loved it.

Spar day?
Is this like a really mini trolley dash?
MrsClatterbuck · 05/11/2020 02:03

Can you get a gift card for the retail park which covers all the shops. A shopping centre near me has a card which you can use in the majority of shops. This would mean that she is not confined to one shop.
My mum who admittedly is a good bit older but has always loved a gift of perfume. She also likes nice handbags or scarves.

Hydrate · 05/11/2020 06:36

Jigsaw puzzle of cats, birds or gardens. Amazon voucher to get herself one of the cheesy romances she enjoys. Something nice for her garden, or an orchid or other houseplant?

TheProvincialLady · 05/11/2020 06:56

Your MIL is rude and she’s also your husband’s mother, not yours, so let him deal with the problem. Or get her the vouchers she said she wanted and let her huff.

Lincslady53 · 05/11/2020 08:21

My f daughter bought me a 3 month subscription from cocoarunners.com
A box of specialist chocolate with tasting notes for 3 consecutive months. A bit nerdy,I thought, but I really looked forward to my monthly chocolate fix.

Lincslady53 · 05/11/2020 08:23

I have just read that she is diaberic, so forget the chocolate treats. Might suit someone else though. I do like iTunes vouchers. Nice to have a bit of credit to buy what I want.

Brefugee · 05/11/2020 08:35

Let her son take over the present buying.

mdh2020 · 05/11/2020 08:38

DVDS? A friend was just bought a year’s subscription to Amazon Prime. How about a subscription to her newspaper?

Iwouldlikesomecake · 05/11/2020 08:42

If you want to get something that will be meaningful to her- if there is a place she loves, or is really interested in, try eBay for postcards and memorabilia from that place. I bought my husband a 1900 map of where he grew up for his birthday and he loved it. You can get something small alongside some more impersonal vouchers, if you don’t want to feel like you’re just giving her something no thought has gone into.

Spar day

Would be so great if the OP sent her to a Spar shop rather than a spa.

madmumofteens · 05/11/2020 11:12
