Facebook, every 3rd post is an advert. Wtf?

It's ramped up massively. Every third post is an advert.
I know I can change my ad preferences but does anyone know if I can reduce the amount generally?

I have googled it but not sure I'm going in the right direction or whether it's just impossible to do.

I've noticed that some of the ads don't have the 3 dots so you can hide them. I had one from NZ something or other. Ffs I live in the UK.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 03/11/2020 19:14

Yes. And most of them are scams. I started a thread about it but no one cared.

LtJudyHopps · 03/11/2020 19:15

It’s been that way for months. I’ve learnt to scroll past them now, if you engage with them they keep coming back!

SebastianTheCrab · 03/11/2020 19:20

Same with Instagram. Have you watched The Social Dilemma? Good insight into the way the social media algorithms work.

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 03/11/2020 19:25

I've accidentally clicked on them a few times, usually when a toddler has leapt on my and jogged me. I was wondering whether they increased because of that.

Every third one though, is everyone else's that often as well?

It’s the run up to Christmas. More businesses competing for ad space so Facebook create more ad space - just like magazines do.
You can hide the ads and see less like them but total ads not so much. It’s not a “free” platform it’s the price you pay.

@MistyGreenAndBlue to be fair this is unlikely - not right for you maybe. Scams all of them - highly unlikelu - and is this is the case please report them.

(If you can’t guess - I do Facebook advertising).

switswooo · 03/11/2020 19:45

Twitter is going the same way, when I scroll down my feed I have to mentally discard multiple ad tweets.

@CovidStoleTheRainbow keep clicking “why I am seeing this ad” you can turn off a lot of preferences that will make you less of a “target” (there I’ve saved you a fiver Grin)

Leaannb · 03/11/2020 20:31

Reddit is the same way and there are 2 ads on this thread alone

WitchQueenofDarkness · 03/11/2020 21:10

Fbpurity.com is a fab browser extension that makes Facebook usable

Fbpurity.com is a fab browser extension that removes the ads and does a whole lot more.

I wouldn’t be using Facebook without it

Doggybiccys · 03/11/2020 21:17

It’s the price you pay for “free” social media. How else do you think FB, insta etc make money?

DannyGlickWindowTapping · 03/11/2020 21:17

I noticed this today. I had the same advert 6 times on a page. Probably because I switch off targeting and hide / block tons, so there's not that many left to show, but it's very annoying. I'm also missing posts from actual friends as it irritates me so much, I just close the app.

BlackLetterDay · 03/11/2020 21:18

Everywhere has ads massively ramped up because we are captured, random because no fucker has money to buy whatever is them.

Doggybiccys · 03/11/2020 21:26

Mumsnet is as bad now with all the sponsored threads and video ads between posts. All hoping you Will pay for MN premium with no ads. Way of the world. Pay or scroll on.

I don’t blame MN - they are a business not a charity. But as users, you can’t expect to get a non advertisement channel / forum for free without ads!

Thanks for your free advice! I did what you suggested and I know have an ad every 9 posts which is much more doable!

I think you have misunderstood my post.

I wasn't complaining about the presence of adverts on social media, and I'm fully aware they are free for us due to making their money through advertising.

The issue I was drawing on is in my title.
