To think 26 seconds isn't long enough to wait?

Arising DPD. Angry

Was researching selling a small piece of furniture and got a quote for courier drop off - £5. All good.

When I went to dispatch the item, this quote had changed to £17 and courier pick up only. I think the packaging required to safely transport it took it over in some dimensions Blush. Rather gutting but I accepted this.

DPD turned up today to collect it. He waited 26 seconds after ringing the doorbell. Then left.

I've had no notifications, but just clicked through on an text notification and it's telling me that they were "advised there was nothing to collect".

AIBU in thinking he should have waited longer?

@Viviennemary

Why didn't you answer the door right away. They must get fed up of people dilly dallying about.
Because she wasn't sitting by the door for 8 straight?
Couchbettato · 03/11/2020 18:29

Also a 3 storey house here, and whenever our door gets knocked on I've to traverse baby gate bedlam whilst kicking a toddler back.

Luckily my local postie just knows to try to door and slides it in the porch. I'd be buggered if I needed a parcel collecting.

I did once return some clothes with door collection and pre-emptively wedged it at the side of the wheelie bin and luckily the courier saw it.

Inkpaperstars · 03/11/2020 18:32

I live in an upper floor flat and it takes me a while to get down to the main door of the communal hall for parcels. They're often gone by the time I get there.

Inkpaperstars · 03/11/2020 18:33

@Alternista

People talking about parcel deliveries are missing the point that this was a collection that OP had paid £17 for.
True, for a paid courier pick up less than 30 seconds wait is ridiculous.
Mcmole · 03/11/2020 18:45

Yep we have a 3 storey house too and of course I'm always on the top floor when the bell goes, it definitely takes a while but luckily all our delivery drivers seem to be quite good at waiting! DH works on the ground floor but always seems to be having a poo at those times Grin

I think 26 seconds is long enough, once you sit there and count it out. I know DPD are given 2 minutes per consignment, from pulling up at the kerb to driving off, so nearly 1/4 of that on waiting is a fair whack.
MintyMabel · 03/11/2020 19:06

Because they were 30 seconds away from the door?

26 seconds is a long time to wait at a door. With a ring doorbell she could have answered the bell and said she was on her way. It also would have taken longer for the driver to disappear, back to their van.

MintyMabel · 03/11/2020 19:08

Also he wouldn't have heard a shout from up in the house I don't think?

He’d have heard a shout through the ring doorbell.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 03/11/2020 19:10

My ring takes a while to kick in tbh. I might time it.

I was in the motorway at the time. So probably best practice to not fanny around with my Ring at that point.

If I’m on the sofa with the legs raised and the kitchen timer goes off, it takes me 25 seconds to put the sofa legs down, stand up, walk to kitchen and stop timer (I know as it counts how far over it goes) so I have no problem with your 26 seconds.

jessstan1 · 03/11/2020 19:42

I think he should have waited a bit longer. Couriers usually have your telephone number if the door isn't answered.

Get on to the company and have a moan. They are charging enough!

VivaMiltonKeynes · 03/11/2020 19:42

You can't answer on your Ring ?

happystrummer · 03/11/2020 20:08

so while we're on a DPD rant...yesterday DPD were due to deliver to me. No delivery and in all day, no phone call or text, front door open for a fair bit of it... so check the tracking and it claims I refused the parcel and here is the proof DPD give on the tracking to show I refused...Confused

To think 26 seconds isn't long enough to wait?
nosswith · 03/11/2020 20:14

Blame those who expect the DPD delivery driver to do a ridiculous amount of work in a day, not the driver themselves.

If OP was on the motorway, as she said, then no, she can't.

Her DD was in the house and on the third floor. Courier should have waited longer for a pick up (not delivery) that has already been paid for.

I couldn't guarantee to get to the door in 26 seconds, depends on whether my knee cooperates that day.

To be honest, whenever I'm waiting for a package or a pickup or whatever I always make sure I can a) hear the door and b) that I have keys ready to unlock it quickly. I know how fast my postman moves from us to next door if he has a parcel (literally 5 seconds) so I don't want next door to have to get up as they're elderly, when the postie was just super impatient.

But 26 seconds is quite a long time. Surely you were expecting him so you could have made yourself a bit more ready? They have lots of things to do every day, not just yours.

For a 9-5 window? Wow,you're a lot more patient than I am. And definitely have a stronger bladder.

@Thewinterofdiscontent

That’s a long time actually. Half a minute of just standing round waiting. My HIT workout is 30 second bursts and it kills me.
Good for you. 26 seconds is not enough time if you are doing a wee, upstairs in a 3 story house, live in a big house, have to shut the dogs in another room before answering the door, are old, infirm or disabled or late stage pregnancy. Jeez. Think about others. It's not all about you!

@Nottherealslimshady

26 seconds is miles longer tha I'd wait at someones door. Where were you? I always shout "2 seconds" as soon as I hear them if I'm upstairs or need to find the key so they know I'm coming.

sonjadog · 03/11/2020 21:45

26 seconds does seem like longer when you are waiting. I am guessing he felt like he had stood there for longer and that is why he left, rather than thinking "26 seconds! My time is up! I am outta here."

Smileyk · 04/11/2020 17:43

If you've got a ring doorbell why didn't you respond to the ring and say you're on your way?

Shell4429 · 04/11/2020 17:45

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, couriers are under immense time pressure. The reason for this is that they are often paid by parcel rather than an actual hourly rate. Their bosses should pay them more. But this is what happens in a consumerist capitalist society I’m afraid.

wigglerose · 04/11/2020 17:58

SOmetimes it takes me ages to get to the front door because I can't find the keys...
