Character clothing for babies....what is the point?

graceelli121 · 03/11/2020 10:03

DS is 11 months old and is my first child. Someone has bought him a Harry Potter tracksuit and it occurred to me that he has no idea what Harry Potter is and whether he likes it, so then I ended up thinking character clothing on babies is pointless or am I overthinking

Isn’t it is just people inflicting their tastes on their (your) child? It’s just marketing for the masses.

Camomila · 03/11/2020 10:08

The character clothing is for the parents and older siblings Smile

DH loves putting DS2 in the Darth Vader babygrow. DS1 likes the minion vest for him. (I prefer the tasteful ones)

Randompersonisme · 03/11/2020 10:11

If you don't like them, don't buy/use them.

I like the, I buy them.

user1493413286 · 03/11/2020 10:12

I guess you could say that about a lot of baby clothing; all the pretty dresses, outfits etc are for the parents really as obviously beyond being warm and comfortable babies don’t know or care what they’re wearing

MereDintofPandiculation · 03/11/2020 10:13

It's for the photos and facebook.

Nottherealslimshady · 03/11/2020 10:13

Most of the things we put babies in is for our sake. They have no idea what they're ever wearing and they dont care.

Emelene · 03/11/2020 10:14

I have a Woody and a Buzz Lightyear outfit for my new baby that I've been given. They look pretty fun. Baby won't mind.

Or underthinking. People put their babies in HP clothes or whatever because they like HP. Same reason anyone does anything with babies, its not like babies give a fuck about any of it.
Why do you think anyone chooses anything for a baby?

AlfieandAnnieRose · 03/11/2020 10:15

You could say it’s the same as slogan clothing for babies and toddlers. Eg ‘I love my mummy lots’ or ‘best bro’ top, baby or child can’t read it but still wears it even if he/she may not agree! 😆 it’s for the parent/sibling.

CounsellorTroi · 03/11/2020 10:16

Not sure. The thing is you could have clothes with sheep or rabbits on and the baby doesn’t know what they are either? I don’t like seeing babies in clothes with naff slogans on though.

unmarkedbythat · 03/11/2020 10:18

Bit of fun? Babies don't know what they're wearing, do they, whether it's a plan white Babygro or a mini football strip or a T shirt with a slogan, so what does it really matter?

graceelli121 · 03/11/2020 10:18

@AlfieandAnnieRose I thought this too 😂 I saw one that said “mummy is my best friend” and all of a sudden in my head went “what if I buy that and I’m not his best friend”

Think I’m going mad in lockdown, he does look cute in this and it says future wizard on the vest, my heads like but what if he’s not a wizard😂😂

I can't stand clothes with cartoon characters etc on. I've never bought anything like that, and don't know why people do. That said, I'm pretty sure my DDs have had Peppa Pig pjs at one point or another, but they don't go outside in those.

ParadeOfRemotes · 03/11/2020 10:19

It's just like any other clothing for babies really. There's no actual reason for a baby to wear anything other than a white babygrow or vest and leggings, but we buy them other things to reflect our likes and dislikes, taste, colours etc.

Shoppingwithmother · 03/11/2020 10:20

“MereDintofPandiculation

I don’t think what you dress your baby in is mainly for photos and facebook. You are looking at them all day. You want to dress them in things you like.

Are you suggesting that babies should just be dressed in plain beige unless you want to put them on Facebook?

purpleme12 · 03/11/2020 10:20

Overthinking
While I wouldn't put my baby in Harry Potter - Too old for babies 🤣 - I've put her in Thumper and loads of things like that
What's wrong with that

WitchesSpelleas · 03/11/2020 10:30

You may as well ask what's the point of anyone wearing anything beyond what's basically necessary to keep us warm. Why dress up to go to a party, say? Why don't we all walk around all the time in whatever we feel is most comfortable, whether that's pyjamas or an old tracksuit or a 10 year old woolly jumper dress with fag burns in it (me - the last one Grin ) We choose clothes to portray a certain image, to make ourselves nice to look at, to fit in, or to make a statement about not conforming. A tiny baby is wholly dependent on the adult (s) looking after him/her, so until they become old enough to be independent they form an extension of their carer's personal image so will be dressed according to the same principles.

graceelli121 · 03/11/2020 10:32

@WitchesSpelleas don’t get me down another rabbit hole lmfao I’ll be up all night 😂😂

Noitjustwontdo · 03/11/2020 10:32

It’s obviously more for the parents and other relatives than the baby/toddler. It doesn’t really matter though, they’re just clothes and they’ll probably get piss, shit or vomit on them.

nosswith · 03/11/2020 10:33

Fashion is a way of selling things you don't really need, and fast fashion is the second biggest cause of climate change. So not falling for it is a good thing in my view.

loobyloo1234 · 03/11/2020 10:34

YANBU but I guess its each to their own. I cringe at really staged photos of babies wearing tutu's and bows aswell though so im probably a bit of a meh than most

graceelli121 · 03/11/2020 10:35

@loobyloo1234 oh my mum put me in a bow when I was younger, I’ve got an Irish traveller background so I had all the frills! Think i pissed shit n projectile vomited on it all haha

All babies and toddlers need are clothes that are weather appropriate and wash well. The rest is for us!

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 03/11/2020 10:39

We don't put DS in anything visibly branded, whether that's a brand name, cartoon etc. When he's a bit older and has things he likes and wants to wear I might relent within reason, he has a pair of Duggee pyjamas that he adores, that were given to him as a gift, but I don't like that lots of children's clothing is essentially advertising.
My DNs are often head to toe in Disney and SILs insta is full of 'making memories' 'magical' trips to euro Disney etc. Each to their own.

lazylinguist · 03/11/2020 10:39

It's no more pointless than choosing baby clothes of a colour you like, or with dinosaurs, butterflies or tractors on.

I've never bought anything like that, and don't know why people do.

Of course you know why people do. People buy them because they like them, same reason you buy your dc the clothes that you choose, presumably.
