Character clothing for babies....what is the point?

graceelli121 · 03/11/2020 10:03

DS is 11 months old and is my first child. Someone has bought him a Harry Potter tracksuit and it occurred to me that he has no idea what Harry Potter is and whether he likes it, so then I ended up thinking character clothing on babies is pointless or am I overthinking

SpeccyLime · 03/11/2020 10:40

It’s for your benefit, not the baby. That’s true of any clothes. Your baby doesn’t care what colours it’s wearing, whether it’s pretty, how cute it is, etc. They only care about being warm and dry. Everything else is for the benefit of others.

aToadOnTheWhole · 03/11/2020 10:41

@AlfieandAnnieRose I thought this too 😂 I saw one that said “mummy is my best friend” and all of a sudden in my head went “what if I buy that and I’m not his best friend”

This has just triggered a memory of our first Christmas with DS, he was about three weeks and someone bought him a festive babygrow that said "all mummy wants is a silent night" and I couldn't bear to put him in it in case he died Grin

I'm pregnant and have got this baby a Harry Potter tracksuit (for this time next year!) I like Harry Potter (and it will tickle DS!) 🧙🤷😁

I was in peacocks yesterday and did some eye rolling at friends t shirts and jumpers for kids.
I think if the wearer isnt the intended audience for the garment then its naff but who am I to judge? Well i like judging but it seems to be frowned upon.

AryaStarkWolf · 03/11/2020 10:42

I think you are waaaay over thinking, you could go down that route with everything you put on him, Blue jumper? what if he hates the colour blue? :p

mongoosebaby · 03/11/2020 10:42

But it's the same argument even with a plain white babygrow. Baby doesn't care what colour it is. It makes zero difference to them.

Meepmeeep · 03/11/2020 10:44

I bought my baby a Disney themed outfit/costume because I thought it was ridiculously cute. And as per previous poster, no I did not post this on any social media.

graceelli121 · 03/11/2020 10:44

@AryaStarkWolf he could hate the colour blue! DS can only wear beige from now on 😅

DS is the same age and loves the gruffalo, and Simba. He gets so excited by dressing up and then roaring at his reflection - so I say this gently that all kids are different. Mine loves books and cartoons and pretend play but there are far older toddlers who don’t. It’s all good.
Coffeekisses · 03/11/2020 10:47

My kids (both old enough) don’t like Harry Potter and every single clothing retailer is awash with HP branded clothes and pyjamas. I just want some nice pyjamas that won’t drive them nuts because it says Gryffindor or whatever!! (I’ve even tried getting them to like HP to make life/shopping easier, but no dice.)

lumberingaboutthehouse · 03/11/2020 10:47

Mn babies may only wear white babygros until the age of 2, when tutus and wellies (boys) and dinosaur tops (girls) are permitted. Tis law Wink

Frazzled13 · 03/11/2020 10:52

Whimsy?

DD has been given a handful of character stuff, and we got her a Harry Potter onesie when we went to HP world while I was pregnant. Generally she’s in cheap leggings and tops from the supermarket but I have no objection to a Winnie the Pooh t shirt (or whatever) if a grandparent wants to get it for her.

Calmandmeasured1 · 03/11/2020 11:01

Everything anyone dresses a baby in is about the purchaser of the clothes. No babies pick their own clothes.

MrsToothyBitch · 03/11/2020 11:17

@lumberingaboutthehouse Grin - I actually said the MN white baby-gro thing to DM yesterday!

Characters crap is for the amusement of parents/others and because it's a fantastic money spinner for franchises. I'm not immune... I avoid Harry Potter or Star Wars or whatever as I don't think it looks right on a baby but I can't resist Beatrix Potter stuff Blush. I think that's quite baby friendly though - no more out there than just any old baby gro or top with a bunny on- rather than declaring my 2 day old spawn will be a ravenclaw or whatever. BP is often used on stuff for babies so it's not as remarkable perhaps but I still recognise it's showing parental preference. I don't like slogan things for babies though, they're rarely funny and things like "born in 2020" or "my first Christmas" can obviously be reused but it just seems a bit pointless.

CarrotCakeCrumbs · 03/11/2020 11:23

By that logic surely we should only dress babies in white baby grows? Babies can't tell you their preferences - who knows if a baby likes a certain colour or not? so of course parents dress them how they like. I don't see anything wrong with it, I don't see the point in spending loads of money on clothes that the baby will only be in for a few months at most, but often the character clothes are no more expensive than plainer designs.

BabyLlamaZen · 03/11/2020 11:23

But it's for the parents? Like all clothing? To look cute?

It never was for the baby 😂

FlyNow · 03/11/2020 11:31

That wouldn't be to my taste but it's purpose is obvious... To amuse the parents/whoever is looking at the baby. Not sure what the problem is with that. Fast fashion leading to climate change yes. But a HP onesie is no more damaging to the climate than a plain white onesie.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 03/11/2020 11:44

Love that when faced with Harry Potter Tracksuit you question whether he likes HP and not whether he will be undertaking any track and field activities today.

LindaEllen · 03/11/2020 11:50

With that attitude you might as well just put them in plain white baby gros until they're 2ish and start forming their own likes and dislikes with what they see on TV etc.

What a silly thread.

TerribleLizard · 03/11/2020 11:52

They’re to bring a bit of joy. I like to wear clothes that make me happy, and chose clothes that I liked for my babies. They’re 2 & 4 so now it’s part what I think they will like, and part what they choose themselves.

Recognising symbols is the foundation of reading. Seeing lines and patches of colour and knowing they represent ‘bear’ or ‘tractor’ and being happy to put the t shirt on because of that, and show it to people, is lovely. Mine both like their favourite colours, animals, vehicles, and characters on their clothes, and it’s nice that getting dressed or ready for bed is a pleasant experience.

Everyone has their personal taste. I dislike kids clothes that are mini versions of adult clothes - particularly toddler dresses with decorative belts for the waists they will develop in the future, and dreary coloured buttoned shirts for boys. I’m also not keen on the shirts with ‘I love my mummy’ and ‘grandma’s little princess’ - but these obviously make someone happy.

Sorry but just to clarify, is that birth born boys and girls, or chosen gender boys and girls? Need to be clear on this please. We should never assume the gender of a 2yo.
loobyloo1234 · 03/11/2020 11:54

@graceelli121 Haha told your parents exactly what you though of the bows and frills Grin

I'm not sure a comparison of tractors/dinosaurs etc are quite the same as a Harry Potter type design - there are some images that are more generic and some that are much more of a personal choice. If you aren't interested in HP, it would be strange imo to dress your child in that type of outfit

lazylinguist · 03/11/2020 11:56

What a mature response. You're aware that people have different tastes, right?

graceelli121 · 03/11/2020 12:41

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz I’ve asked him but didn’t get much of a response, will try him later 😂

I know it’s for the parents and I love the kids clothes but it kind of bewildered me and made me laugh thinking about baby clothes. @LindaEllen it’s literally a bit of light heartedness. Don’t worry I will make a new thread about coronavirus/trump/brexit please make a selection from the 3. Hmm

@lazylinguist yes and that's my opinion. It's poorly written and not even original. Plenty of diehard superfans out there for you to chat with though.
