To buy a car 3 days after passing my driving test?

Just worried as obviously they took my provisional and applied for my full license when I passed my test on Saturday. Had a look online and it says it can take 2 weeks to come, however DP is pretty sure his only took a few days.

How long did your license take to arrive?

Also do you need to wait for your full license to arrive before actually reserving a car?

Lockdowns getting in the way of so many things! Sad

As far as I remember as long as you have a receipt of sending of your provisional, or a pass certificate you can carry on as if you do have your full licence. Congrats on passing by the way.

You don't need to have any kind of driving licence to buy a car, anyone can buy one.

Moonmelodies · 03/11/2020 08:07

You don't need a driving license to buy a car, only to drive and insure it.

bravotango · 03/11/2020 08:07

When you pass you get a thing that you can show in lieu of a licence until your full one arrives - carry that with you when you're driving until you get the cars through the post. You don't need this to buy the car though.

CatsOutOfTheBag · 03/11/2020 08:07

Youve passed the test now get the car!! What ya waiting for?

37weekswithno2 · 03/11/2020 08:08

Anyone can buy a car, no need for a license

TheQueef · 03/11/2020 08:10

Insurance is the issue.
You can buy it now and insure it driving licence held for 0.

Spanglybangles · 03/11/2020 08:11

I bought my first car before I’d received my provisional. My dad just came with me to the dealership to pick it up so he could drive it home. Even managed to insure it myself too (for a sensible price). This was back in 2003 though, so I guess things may have changed.

TheQueef · 03/11/2020 08:12

A tip from an older driver, you start learning to drive now.
You will ding it or open doors on bollards.
Choose wisely, a mint brand new car will lose value much more than used.

Non drivers can own cars and a license is just a physical proof of your eligibility to drive on a database somewhere.

I was pulled over by the police and breath tested) because I got off a wedding bus at 2am and they watched me get in a car bit of course I was sober as I was expecting my 3rd child.

When I got in the police car I left my license with my handbag in mine so instead of getting it, I gave them my details. A license isn't really required.

My grandma gave me money for a car a couple of years ago, to give me an incentive to get on and do my test. I bought one before doing my test because the perfect one came up. I didn't need my license at all to buy it, my mum drove it to our house for me and my dad came to collect her from here.

MadameBlobby · 03/11/2020 08:15

I just bought a car and had to produce my driving licence when I collected it. Never had to before. I didn’t need it to order it though.

TheQueef · 03/11/2020 08:17

@MadameBlobby did they give you free insurance?

DreadingSeason2020sFinale · 03/11/2020 08:18

And this with bells on. A brand new car loses thousands in value as soon as you drive off the forecourt too. You're more likely to have an accident now early in driving and if you total it, without either extra cost of gap insurance on top of what we normally get, you won't get it's brand new value back and may end up still owing money on a car you don't have.

Assuming you are in the UK, you absolutely do not need to show your driving licence to buy a car. My daughter bought herself a little car in August, when she still only had a provisional licence. My DP drove it home for her, and i was insured as main driver until she passed her test in September.

It took less than a week for her full licence to come back from DVLA. Good luck with your new car!

BrumBoo · 03/11/2020 08:23

Mine arrived 3 days after I passed my test, and that was in lockdown. However, I never needed it to buy a car, which I did pretty much straight away.

AriesTheRam · 03/11/2020 08:26

I've had my car for 3 weeks and I haven't passed yet.Ive had to book for next yr due to covid. You just need provisional.

Jessbow · 03/11/2020 08:45

Buying a car is just that- anyone can make that purchase. You dont have to hold a licence. The seller wont care. A reputable vendor wont let you drive it away without proof of licence and insurance. Others are not so choosy.

Lazypuppy · 03/11/2020 08:49

I bought my car when i started learning to drive.

Anyone can buy a car

MadameBlobby · 03/11/2020 08:54

No they didn’t. I wondered if it was for money laundering but my passport would have sufficed for that but they told me they needed to see my driving licence

TheDoctorDances · 03/11/2020 09:20

A lot of places are letting you test drive without them being in the car, but you’d have to prove you’ve got a full license for their insurance purposes.

Potionqueen · 03/11/2020 10:36

Congratulations on passing your test.
