To wonder how men and woman actors do sex scenes?

Ok hear me out, I know it's their job but I'm speaking about the very raunchy sex scenes in films where you see the the male is flaccid.

I would have thought that those type of scenes would excite them and wonder if this has happened.

Bare with me I've got insomnia and this is my thought of the night but I would love to hear your opinions about this.

Remember that it's not just the two actors sharing an intimate moment. There will be camera crew, sound technicians, the director and other production staff there as well, just a few metres away, and right in their faces for some shots. It's not surprising that there might be difficulty in "remains excited", especially if it needs multiple takes.

I work in TV.

it's totally unsexy.

For example when you see a closeup of an actor's face supposedly gazing into the eyes of their lover, what they're probably actually staring at is the hairy arsecrack of a guy holding the boom.

Unless it's a certain very specific type of indie film, the entire scene is choreographed and filmed shot by shot. Between each shot they have hair and makeup checks and probably lighting adjustments. If there's ever a shot where you don't see the actor's face in shot, it's more than likely a stand-in and not the real actor.

It's not like two actors just climb into bed together and start rolling around. It's more like: wait 10 mins for the lighting set up to be completed. Shoot three-second medium-shot of woman straddling man. Actors stand up and put robes back on, drink tea and chat. Wait for lighting to be re-arranged. Have makeup touched up. Shoot closeup of female actor's mouth coming in to make contact with male actor's stand-in's naked chest. Another break. Shoot 5-second shot of woman's head being thrown back in ecstasy (male actor probably in trailer having a fag at this point). Another break.

This needs to shown to porn lovers - maybe it'll quell the desire somewhat to know how unsexy it really is.

There was an article abour this in the BBC news site a while ago - sounded like barriers get worn to prevent intimate contact; I'd guess they'd also be used for this reason.

I'd guess male arousal is uncomfortable/awkward for both parties involved in the scene, especially in the post 'me too' era.

Plus no male actor is going to want viewers getting a glimpse of their hard on and judging.

seayork2020 · 03/11/2020 03:17

I wonder why onscreen kissing sounds so loud and sloppy, it is probably meant to be arousing but it sounds like they food stuck and it sounds revolting

FortunesFave · 03/11/2020 03:45

I was an actor for ten years before having DC. I'll tell you about it. I have had a raunchy scene with a gay man (for tv) and he did get a hard-on. Was very disconcerting as I'd had sex scenes with straight men and they never.

I didn't mind kissing men that I wasn't familiar with but some were better at it than others. Some actors stick their tongue in which is a no-no.

jessstan1 · 03/11/2020 03:45

When I saw thread title I thought it would be about doing sex scenes whilst socially distant! I've never seen a sex scene in a film where a willy was shown either flaccid or erect.

Wingedharpy · 03/11/2020 03:46

Was it Roger Moore who said before he did a sex scene with an actress he would apologise in advance saying:
"I may get a little excited during this scene so I apologise if I get an erection.......and, I also apologise if I don't"!

jessstan1 · 03/11/2020 03:49

A real gentleman, Wingedharpy (at least in his professional life).

Whysrumgone · 03/11/2020 04:00

It does actually happen on occasion

ClareBlue · 03/11/2020 05:21

@StamfordHill

BTW is 'bare with me' an innocent misspelling or a Freudian slip? Wink
I was thinking this might be some cure for insomnia, too
ragged · 03/11/2020 05:39

I thought the scenes in Love Actually were pretty good for showing this. Very unsexy, depressingly banal.

DeKraai · 03/11/2020 06:12

This needs to shown to porn lovers - maybe it'll quell the desire somewhat to know how unsexy it really is.

You seem to have a high opinion of porn lovers. They know women could be non-consenting and still watch it. They see women gagging and having tears in their eyes and still watch it. I doubt they could give a toss 😉 about the filming technique.

Sparklingbrook · 03/11/2020 06:32

There was a series called Normal People earlier in the year that had some very realistic sex scenes. The director employed an ‘intimacy coach’. Turns out out a lot of it is clever camera angles and choreography.

Yutes · 03/11/2020 06:34

There’s a difference between porn and love scenes on dramatic tv.

The penis must be shown flaccid on dramatic film/tv. That’s what separates it from porn (not the only thing). But tv/film cannot show a real erect penis.

The actors in film/tv may use pillows or modesty panels. It will be choreographed to some extent.
And sometimes I think that people have to concentrate to act...I think sometimes that might be enough to not get a hard on. Grin

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 03/11/2020 07:17

Samuel L Jackson says the I apologise if I get excited line on Graham Norton, he also says there is always some guy there eating a sandwich.

There is a contract between the two actors about where hands go, it is completely choreographed, Keira Knightly and James McAvoy are friends and because of this in Atonement she said anything above the waist was fine. On Outlander outakes there is someone off camera saying something like and now the breast as the two leads strip naked.

I have always been interested in film and how the whole thing comes together from blocking, camera angles, special effects etc which is why I know a bit about it.

It isn't romantic, even on a "closed set" there are about 15 people incredibly close to you pointing cameras, holding booms. Olivia Wild directed Booksmart and said she wanted to realistically portray how hard it is to actually strip off clothes when someone is wearing Converse with the laces.

SimonJT · 03/11/2020 07:23

A friend has done a few sex scenes, I asked him about them, he said he found actual sex scenes okay because they’re cut into lots of small heavily choreographed shots. Its almost like a weird dance.

He finds scenes with kissing very difficult as he dislikes kissing someone who isn’t his partner.

Hmm
SlightlyJaded · 03/11/2020 07:40

I work in film and can also testify to the stilted nature of shooting. Everything is stop/start/checks/makeup/hair/lighting/camera move etc in between. There are usually several people in the room - even on a closed set (where it's minimal crew) and we usually have a bit of a joke about it all first to put everyone at ease.

I have worked with some fairly high profile actors and usually the more experienced actor (if there is a disparity) will go a long way in reassuring the other actor and trying to put them at ease. One one set I was on, there was quite an intense sex scene being shot and we all wore PJs that day to put the female actor (who was far less experienced than her male lead) in a position where she felt less vulnerable. The male actor made a big to do and a hoo hah about checking he didn't have bad breath before they started to try and relax her as well. People are pretty kind in those situations.

TaintForTheLikesOfWe · 03/11/2020 07:47

What PizzaExpressWoking said. If you look at the quality of a porno (even a good porno) compared to a sex scene in a film they are a country mile apart and this is why. Men will give themselves a bit of hand relief too just prior if they feel they need to. It's usually all so professional the last thing they think of is sex.
There are several cases from the past where this is alleged to not be true though but I'm not digging for that on my computer Grin

ShowingOut · 03/11/2020 07:54

Mainstream filming (rather than porn) now often has sensitivity directors for sex scenes as well. To choreograph the whole thing, discuss it with the actors, and look after them.
