Because the Tories aren't exactly known for being an inclusive government?

blardyfeck · 02/11/2020 13:22

There have been campaigns over the lack of sign language interpreters at the briefings. The BBC have said that an interpreter is available on the BBC news channel but personally I think it's appalling.

janinlondon · 02/11/2020 13:26

BBC news channel has the signing - we don't use that one because the person is often standing in front of the slides, but it is available.

Bakeachocolatecaketoday · 02/11/2020 13:28

They do... hence the YABU vote.

PickAChew · 02/11/2020 13:32

It's not like they'd even need someone particularly fluent in bsl for Boris. "bumble bumble, erm..." pretty much covers it.

MushMonster · 02/11/2020 13:36

not sure about all the briefings and so, but they definitively had one on Sunday. He did very well, but was covering part of the slides, as the editing team did not bother to crop him to the side of the presentation.

I don't know what the given excuse is, but the real reason is institutionalised utter contempt for the less able in English society.

That's if there is a given excuse. Somehow I doubt they've even replied to anyone who has asked. (Well they haven't replied to me, in 7 months and I can only go by my experiences).

unchienandalusia · 02/11/2020 13:42

I watched it on bbc news and it had someone signing?

PickAChew · 02/11/2020 14:05

@Youandmeareluckytobeus

I tried watching the PM's announcement on the news channel but had to turn off and watch it on Utube later. The guy doing sign language doing his gurning and exaggerated gestures is annoying beyond measure. I couldn't bear to look at it.
Username checks out?

Seriously? Feel very lucky that you're not one of the people who rely on BSL to communicate.

We are incredibly ignorant of Deaf people in this country and it's shameful.

Where? Hidden on the news channel?

I’d recommend people look at the “Where’s the interpreter?” campaign.

PurpleDaisies · 02/11/2020 14:10

Mind your language here. Deaf people are not “less able”. They just can’t hear.

nosswith · 02/11/2020 14:11

This was pointed out to Mr Johnson weeks ago and nothing has been done. Is he fearful the sign language interpreter will make the 'coffee bean shake' ('self-love') sign behind his back?

PurpleDaisies · 02/11/2020 14:12

You do realise those are essential language features of BSL?

I can tell this thread is going to make me want to throw things.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 02/11/2020 14:14

What's wrong with the BBC news channel where it is available?

I'd HATE that job for Boris though. It would be like waiting fir the tap to drip.

I was going to say the same. Facial expression conveys a lot of the meaning.

I can't stand this attitude.

I know this is supposed to be funny, but deaf people are as entitled as the everyone else to have access to Boris’ ramblings. They are entitled to a properly qualified interpreter and it takes more skill not less to live interpret someone as incoherent and prone to obscure metaphor as our prime minister is.

Wow, aren't you a delight?
PurpleDaisies · 02/11/2020 14:19

Because when the stream is repeated, there is no interpreter there. I missed the live broadcast and found the version on iplayer was missing the interpreter, as was the version on YouTube and everywhere else.

Most countries across the world have interpreters. I can’t understand why the English prime minister is so against it.

WeAreFromThePlanetDuplo · 02/11/2020 14:20

Over here in NI we have two signers at the same time.

Wannakisstheteacher · 02/11/2020 14:23

Because for the Tories it isn't something worth spending money on.

Samcro · 02/11/2020 14:24

I am sure there wasn't one on Saturday.

Zahra2 · 02/11/2020 14:25

They do have someone signing - it’s half the flaming screen!
