to expect Startrite school shoes to not be falling apart already!

DD is in year 1 - new shoes from Startrite bought on 7 August, worn for the first time on first day of term. The sole can be peeled back on both shoes from the front.

I took them back to the shop and said it was unacceptable and they said she must be doing 'too much running on her toes!' I said she has been at school in them and they are school shoes.

They offered to glue the sole back down at a cobblers but I pointed out that it has actually worn away so gluing back what was left wouldn't fix the problem. They refused point blank to do anything else.

Am going to send them off to Startrite in the half term and hope for a speedy resolution.

i would be really unimpressed, especially with the reaction of the shop. i would be tempted to write to the top person at Startrite, as they build teir reputaton on producing strong, durable school shoes.

Good phrase there. Mind if I use if in my letter!?

dd is on her third year of Startrite school shoes and we've never had an issue with wear yet. Which model were they ?

Sweetheart. You can see how much the 'tread' has worn down on the sole. It can't be good quality leather.

Sorry - I mean rubber.

hmm , dd normally has Bolero which has a more substantial sole. Your contract is with the shop , not Startrite, so your complaint is addressed to them and for them to remedy. You can reject their offer of a repair and ask for a refund, as unfit for purpose. (see Consumer Direct for relevant wording to use)

Thanks for that. I've had a read through. When I went in today the shop said it was just wear and tear so wouldn't replace them. I think I am going to have to send DH in as they managed to talk me down. When I said that I expected the shoes to be able to cope with normal school use which includes playing in the playground she said I can't expect steel capped toes! She was quite unpleasant which is a shame as it's a convenient shop to buy Startrite in.
