I work at a university on the front line seeing students 1-1 (I work in student support) and have continued to see students this term at a distance & with measures in place. ALL the students I have seen have been grateful for the human contact.

I also have 2 kids in primary and secondary. I want them to stay in school as my eldest had to have counselling after the last lockdown.

Aibu to say that schools need to stay open and I say that as someone on the front line.

YABU - they should shut
YANBU- they need to stay open

Some of us have to work, I need schools to stay open in some capacity else the NHS will have less staff than it already has.

I no longer have school age children but work as a private music teacher. I have been online since March. The change in personality of the children between July, when they had had months of home schooling, and September, when they returned to school was phenomenal. I would go as far as to say many were mildly depressed when they couldn't go to school. They need to be at school. They have lost months of valuable education, particularly those of exams age, and need to be with their friends.

The Government has to make it safe for teachers to be at work.

I don't think they will unless parents campaign for it to happen. I'm not seeing any evidence of things improving.

Ifeelsuchafool · 02/11/2020 20:37

Keeping schools and universities open is like having a designated pissing area in a swimming pool. Might as well not bother with lockdown at all.

Yup this.

They must make it a safe working environment for teachers.

It's awful to think that there will have to be a trend of teachers contracting and dying from Covid before they will do anything.

Nicknacky · 02/11/2020 20:40

ifeelsuchafool So what’s your situation with regards school age children/work etc?

FlapAttack23 · 02/11/2020 20:41

I agree with @Clearasmuddypuddles . You’re not on the front line even in your lecture theatres with 300 students. You don’t have to circulate and be in small rooms or busy corridors between lessons.

If it’s not a competition don’t make a song and dance about being “front line staff” as part of your post

Nicknacky · 02/11/2020 20:41

Pascal2908 And you, Pascal, what’s your situation regarding children and work?

clarcats · 02/11/2020 20:43

@NorthGirl2

After seeing those graphs I really think this lockdown will have little effect unless they shut schools. The rise in cases corresponds with the schools going back, and children are known super spreaders of disease, with no social distancing and little awareness of hygiene.

If they shut the schools but kept everything else open with social distancing (even pubs, non- essential retail etc), I'm willing to bet the cases will go down.

governement graphs were flawed, scare factor and based on out of date information
OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 02/11/2020 20:43

I really hope teachers don't die.

The much bigger risk is multiple teachers having to self isolate with symptoms or confirmed cases, causing uncontrolled school shutdowns.

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 02/11/2020 20:45

The people most at risk are the Grandparents (and older parents) of the children. And older relatives of teachers. Also those with health conditions.

Nikhedonia · 02/11/2020 20:48

The whole thing just makes me shake my head.

How the fuck are we in November with no clear understanding of how to keep schools open safely? We have to value our children's education, but surely that goes hand in hand with valuing the health and wellbeing of the teachers and other school staff?

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 02/11/2020 20:59

It has been left to individual headteachers, school trusts and academy chains to interpret what to do. They are all making different decisions - some good, some terrible.

The government WANTS to sit back and blame the schools. That way it isn't their fault.

Flutter12 · 02/11/2020 21:00

Single parent. Full time job. How exactly do I homeschool my 5 year old?!

I am a single parent too and a teacher so I see both sides.
But there is a big difference between trying your best and doing some things and just simply not bothering trying like a lot of people seen it as a holiday and then moaned their child missed out on an education.

In secondary school the kids are meant to take more responsibility so they’re expected to make more of an effort than a primary school child would.

Flutter12 · 02/11/2020 21:02

Some of us have to work, I need schools to stay open in some capacity else the NHS will have less staff than it already has.

They will still stay open for key workers or disadvantaged children.

What about those of us who aren't classed as key workers but still have to work?

Nicknacky · 02/11/2020 21:09

Flutter12 Im a key worker and the school wouldn’t accept my children as both parents had to be key workers. The childminder removed care from us too. So it’s not as simple as saying the schools were open. Although my husband had to close his business so that solved that problem I suppose!!

Oh and I was homeschooling using an iPad and a lot of the work the school were setting wasn’t supported by the software on the iPad. Couldn’t do it. So again, not as simple as you imply.

trogladite · 02/11/2020 21:11

I desperately dont want schools to shut but have now been told i have to wear a surgical ppe mask all day to teach my eyfs class! Im so pissed off. I'm not even allowed a visor instead. Poor kids

Feministicon · 02/11/2020 21:14

@Vinomummyinlockdown

Have you not seen how covid has risen since educational settings returned??? How can they not?! Children mixing, all over each other, 30 in a class etc etc ... they SPREAD IT. They silently in some cases spread it to people like me who are vulnerable. I’m 46 with two primary aged kids. I’d rather not die thanks!!!!!! I know most of you don’t give a shit as you’re “fine” but let’s be a little human. You can’t have a lockdown and then have kids prancing all about spreading covid. It’s totally illogical. There are plenty of Asian studies to show the impact young people have on the spread of covid.
Prancing about 😂
TheKeatingFive · 02/11/2020 21:15

The idea of key workers is redundant now (and was after about 6 weeks into the crisis). We need the revenue generators as much as we need the essential services.

We are facing a devastating economic outlook. We can’t be as colossally stupid as to fail to facilitate the people making money that will fund health and education for the future.
