To ignore the door to trick or treaters

It's been advised in our area trick or treating is not allowed, we are in tier 3 and I believe you get fined if caught doing so, I'm normally the sort to buys loads of sweets love answering the door to trick or treaters as it's something I never did as a child, but this year I've bought nothing nor have I put any decorations up due to current restrictions and am not taking dc trick or treating, however my neighbours have a Facebook group and someone had posted today saying they are still trick or treating as all the kids play out together anyway, almost everyone agreed, but I haven't bought any sweets for the kids! AIBU to ignore the door if they knock on?

Ignore. I hope no one will knock. We are in tier 3 so they shouldn't.
Shame, because like you I haven't grown up with Halloween so I really like it normally Grin

Mamamia456 · 31/10/2020 17:20

No, course your not, if you don't want to answer it don't.

cologne4711 · 31/10/2020 17:21

I never answer the door unless I am expecting a person or a parcel. I know MNers think this is weird, I think it's weirder to encourage people to invade your privacy.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 31/10/2020 17:22

I am this year. No decorations and my house is dark at the front. I normally go all out. I'm not a misery generally. Grin
Tbf we usually have loads but not seen anyone yet. So maybe it won't be an issue.

june2007 · 31/10/2020 17:22

How about putting up a notice on your windown saying no to trick and treaters. We havn;t had any round our way and most poeple I know are not doing it. I have no sweets this year and no jack-o lantern.

mogloveseggs · 31/10/2020 17:22

We have put decorations up as the village is doing a pumpkin trail but haven't put sweets out. Lots have though.

Scarlettpixie · 31/10/2020 17:22

I am ignoring this year too. Yanbu.

Burrit · 31/10/2020 17:23

I've shut my curtains and turned off the lights BlushI've got a baby too so I'm hoping if they are knocking it won't wake him up Confused feel like such a Scrooge it's a very close knit neighbourhood haha

We're Tier 3 too, no pumpkin out the front this year but if we get any knocks I'll answer and say we'll have double sweets out next year (if we can then, fingers crossed).

DaddysGirlForLife · 31/10/2020 17:24

Ignore it. The general rule is, if the house hasn't got a pumpkin outside or isn't decorated then you don't knock on the door anyway.

Terrace58 · 31/10/2020 17:25

If the porch light is off, they should skip your home.

crankysaurus · 31/10/2020 17:25

OP, if your neighbours have a FB group, can you post on it saying you'll not have any treats out this year and ask for the kids not too be sent to yours?

MaosChaos · 31/10/2020 17:26

Don't answer it.
In our area we have decorated outside. Someone has produced a map of all houses decorated up.
And no knocking at doors allowed.

Our hedge has a spiders web full of wrapped sweets if the kids are allowed to take them.

I'm loving no knocks at the door but still letting the little ones have fun.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 31/10/2020 17:26

Our house isn't decorated / we don't have a pumpkin out. I won't be impressed if parents let their DC knock.

JJsDinerWaffles · 31/10/2020 17:27

I don’t think anyone will be knocking this year (unless they are exceeeeedingly dim.) We don’t celebrate it so usually it a sign up saying no thank you and keep the house dark/no pumpkin outside. It’s always been respected.

You never have to open the door if you don’t want to. Be strong!!

Burrit · 31/10/2020 17:28

@crankysaurus yes I could do that's A good idea, there's a few who aren't on it though so might still knock Confused will just have to wait and see I suppose

OP posts:
SocialBees · 31/10/2020 17:29

In my area they definitely won't knock if you haven't put a pumpkin out.

crankysaurus · 31/10/2020 17:30

Just thinking, we'd have had a whole load of little kids round by now, it's been dark a while Sad

Mumtumwobble · 31/10/2020 17:32

Tier 3 here too. I’m not answering to trick or treaters. I’m hoping no one knocks because there are no decorations up.

Rafflesway · 31/10/2020 17:32

Similar to yourself OP!

I normally buy sweets to give the kids but, as we live semi rurally in a small cul de sac, some years no one comes anyway.

However, this year we definitely won't be answering the door unfortunately. We are tier 2!

greenlynx · 31/10/2020 17:34

I did this sometimes even before coronavirus: curtains closed, no pumpkin, no decorations and I was upstairs with TV on so could not hear a thing. I always thought that no decorations/pumpkins was a clue.

DeeplyMovingExperience · 31/10/2020 17:35

Such a shame for the kids. This is (hopefully) our last halloween in our house. Been here many years and always put on a big thing for the local kids with loads of decorations and sweets.

I really do feel very sorry for youngsters in this climate.

Burrit · 31/10/2020 17:37

I wouldn't personally knock at a house with no decorations but I know my parents never put decorations up and have always had trick or treaters over the years

OP posts:
CodenameVillanelle · 31/10/2020 17:39

Do kids actually knock where there are no decorations? They don't round here. I've got decorations up and sweets in a tin on the wall and nobody has knocked here.

PaintMePurple · 31/10/2020 17:39

We’re not tier 3 but I won’t be answering the door. I’ve not put pumpkins out and no one has knocked yet.
