To ignore the door to trick or treaters

It's been advised in our area trick or treating is not allowed, we are in tier 3 and I believe you get fined if caught doing so, I'm normally the sort to buys loads of sweets love answering the door to trick or treaters as it's something I never did as a child, but this year I've bought nothing nor have I put any decorations up due to current restrictions and am not taking dc trick or treating, however my neighbours have a Facebook group and someone had posted today saying they are still trick or treating as all the kids play out together anyway, almost everyone agreed, but I haven't bought any sweets for the kids! AIBU to ignore the door if they knock on?

We never get any Hmm ever! Not really sure why!

Suzi888 · 31/10/2020 18:20

Oops pressed too soon. YANBU I wouldn’t worry lots of people won’t answer this year.

SuitedandBooted · 31/10/2020 18:20

In our village you only knock at houses that have a pumpkin outside. Never had any randoms knocking on the odd year when I didn't do it.

Smallsteps88 · 31/10/2020 18:24

I’m usually all in at Halloween but I haven’t this year and didn’t put up any decorations. No pumpkins, lights are off but still we’ve had Tick or Treaters. I felt bad but I ignored. 1) I have no treats and 2) I don’t want to be in cold contact with strangers who are going to be in close contact with dozens of others tonight.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/10/2020 18:24

I ignore every year!

Spudface75 · 31/10/2020 18:28

Tier 3 here as well, and the ‘don’t knock if there are no decorations’ rule is ignored every single year. I have just got back from work, and there’s a few kids wandering around the local area in fancy dress, no where near as many as normal and no one has knocked on our door yet.

PatchworkElmer · 31/10/2020 18:32

We’ve been out (not tier 3) but just took our own sweets and gave DS a packet every time we saw a decorated house. No knocking on doors, still had a lovely time!

Of course YANBU, OP.

Shizzlestix · 31/10/2020 18:33

I normally stick up the local police poster saying no trick or treat. I could do without the dogs barking at every knock.

Burrit · 31/10/2020 18:34

@Aridane sounds awful! I take it that's teenagers and not little children doing that?

Tier 2 here with no decorations this year, nipped out and a group of kids shouted "you got candy?" Clearly they are trick or treating hereConfused

Todaytomorrow09 · 31/10/2020 18:36

Our area you only knock if there is a pumpkin out. Sadly this is the first year we haven’t decorated or pumpkin. I’ve heard kids out and about but no door knocks.
The area did a Halloween walk of decorations houses - we didn’t get involved though.

Iwillneverbesatisfied · 31/10/2020 18:36

in scotland. no door knocks yet. We're no allowed to do anything in our area says wee krankie.

Burrit · 31/10/2020 18:43

I do feel sorry for the kids this year, not been much for them to look forward to bless them

No kids out here. I wasn’t going to open the door to anyone anyway. Took DD out for a walk to see the pumpkins lit and the usual houses have their decorations up but no one around thank goodness. A few houses have a bowl of sweets outside their door but that’s all.

NotGenerationAlpha · 31/10/2020 18:48

We are in tier one and we went for a pumpkin spotting walk. No one is trick or treating and it is normally very busy here. Very few houses are decorated but it’s a good walk and I see a few out.

I think that’s a great sign of people complying with the spirit of social distancing even though it’s allowed.

ComeOnGordon · 31/10/2020 18:48

Porch and house in complete darkness at the front & still someone rang the doorbell! Who sends kids out trick or treating in a pandemic! I ignored it. I don’t have any sweets in the house anyway. Could only have offered them a clementine.

Bwlch · 31/10/2020 18:53

We haven't had anybody so far.

Mind you, we didn't have any last year either.

GenevaL · 31/10/2020 19:11

Course not. Parents should be telling children to only knock on doors which are inviting - eg cobwebs, pumpkins etc outside. Everyone else should be respected and their doors not hammered on by children demanding sweets.

Hyperfish101 · 31/10/2020 19:14

Quite surprised by how many are out trick or treating. We’re in Tier 3,

Rockbird · 31/10/2020 19:16

We've had far fewer children out than usual. We put an old table right by our front wall and spread some wrapped sweets out on it. Any kids that are out get a sweet, they aren't knocking and they don't have to rummage.

Alas we're waiting for new curtains at the front so we're totally on show, apart from the fake cobwebs I've put up.

Rae36 · 31/10/2020 19:20

We've got a couple of pumpkins out but not answering the door. Got a sign out saying please come back next year. We usually have loads of decorations and have had about 20 knocks on the door by this time already. It felt too miserable to have nothing at all outside.

Juanbablo · 31/10/2020 19:22

Our local council said no trick or treating and we are in a lower tier area. Planned to ignore the door to anyone knocking but no one did.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/10/2020 19:35

I am quite proud of my area😁 no knocking

wlv12 · 31/10/2020 19:39

We have 3 week old puppies (a litter) so don’t want people knocking anyway, we normally love Halloween and the kids love dressing up and trick or treating but we’ve done an indoor Halloween with a Halloween sweetie hunt tonight which has worked well, and put a sign up requesting no knocking due to covid but to have a Happy Halloween and we haven’t had anyone knocking.

CottonSock · 31/10/2020 19:42

No one knocking here where we live in Wales.. our house has decorations, but people know the rules. Some have put sweets out front. Overall a lovely atmosphere on our early eve walk. Families dressed up, no one demanding sweets.
