To think all those people calling the Welsh first minister a dictator can go eat their words...

National lockdown looming next week:
www.theguardian.com/world/2020/oct/30/save-christmas-with-covid-lockdown-in-england-experts-say

There have been several threads on here calling Mark Drakeford a dictator, slagging off the welsh firebreak lockdown, commenting on the rules in wales.

Not looking quite so stupid now is he?

Aibu to think that the tories who criticised him can go eat their words? Boris has been missing in action again during the worst crisis in living memory, test and trace has failed etc

OP posts:
peboh · 31/10/2020 06:41

Boris is also a twat, though this isn't new information.

AlternativePerspective · 31/10/2020 06:42

Do you actually know this from an official government source then OP? I must have missed the briefing.

Fact is that the press want us to go back into lockdown. If they say it enough times then maybe it’ll happen. Just like the armies on the streets and the hundreds of bodies piling up in the street.... Hmm

And if you think that Wales will come out of lockdown if England go back in you’re deluded. If anything they will extend their lockdown to coincide with ours to prevent people from England travelling over there...

justanotherneighinparadise · 31/10/2020 06:44

Also considering that London drives the economy for the rest of the UK and generates the wealth that pays for essential public services (at least it did pre covid). You’d think that trying to keep that running for as long as possible would be a good thing. The government has been trying to keep some kind of balance between the economy and the health of the people which is why so many of these poor decisions have been made.

Allthestarsarecloser · 31/10/2020 06:46

Well it’s all over the media today @AlternativePerspective and given how the Government have a known policy of leaking crucial information to the press under Cummings, I’d say it was a given

OP posts:
BullBailey · 31/10/2020 06:47

Nope, still think he’s been ridiculous. He hasn’t saved little businesses from the big bad supermarkets because people will just buy online, so I imagine Jeff Bezos will be the main beneficiary from his stupid ideas.

Boris and friends are ridiculous too, if that makes you feel better. It’s not Wales VS England although both the Welsh and Scottish first ministers have tried to make it that way on multiple occasions.

devildeepbluesea · 31/10/2020 06:47

I'm in Wales and I was really pissed off when the buying rules were announced. They were, and still are, mental and serve no practical purpose.

But as to the rest - yeah, Drakeford has done well. He's still doing well. He's leading by example and doing all he can. Just for comparison, during the spring lockdown he moved out of the family home in case he brought the virus home to his family. Johnson fucked off to Italy to have a party for his latest child.

flaviaritt · 31/10/2020 06:49

I think he is acting like a dictator. By all means, gave a lockdown, but arguing with people about whether they can buy toys?

TeddyIsaHe · 31/10/2020 06:51

Op people are allowed to get pissed off at the circumstances, we’re nearly a year into a pandemic. It’s been absolutely horrendous for many, and another lockdown is going to push them to the edge.

To not allow discussions or anger about it would make you rather dictator-like.

AlternativePerspective · 31/10/2020 06:52

It says he is considering it.

Given that the ONS report yesterday suggested that the figures are levelling out now in some regions, There’s a lot of conflicting information out there, so actually I am of the view that it’s best to avoid the press where possible and go with things as they happen.

Even if this is being considered, there was also a headline yesterday suggesting that London/Birmingham would be going into tier3 yesterday that other regions would be going into tier2, read all that at once and I think it’s fair to say that nobody knows.

And if you look at yesterday’s figures they are pretty much on a par with the same time last week, whereas previously the figures were going up week on week. In fact the ONS report also states that the figures are doubling approximately every fourteen days whereas previously it was every eight, and that the r number is between 1.1 and 1.3 which is a drop from two weeks ago.

I thought some of it was because there were originally no rules for what no essentials were & the supermarkets couldn't sell them because small shops were closed. Except you could shop online... Did the small shops forced to close receive any rate reductions or subsidies?

nosswith · 31/10/2020 07:11

I thought that the shop sales rules should have been size of shops not what you can sell, but other than that, it seemed a reasonable thing to do, and much of what was done in Wales seems to have been timely.

Mr Johnson two weeks late it seems, as usual.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4062546-To-ask-what-on-Earth-wales-are-doing

This thread was a classic example & as people have pointed out, has changed tone now an England lockdown is possible too

OP posts:
goggygill · 31/10/2020 07:14

I don't have time to read that whole thread but the OP literally says

"Ok fair enough, tell people to stay at home but surely if someone needs to go shopping for essentials they can buy non essentials whilst they’re in a specific shop."

So no issue with the lockdown...

Bezzi · 31/10/2020 07:22

You're very angry for this early in the morning.

Allthestarsarecloser · 31/10/2020 07:31

@Bezzi and you are quite passive aggressive for this early in the morning

OP posts:
Bambooble · 31/10/2020 07:33

OP you're trying really hard to push a point that wasn't there. The threads (including the one you linked) were about the restrictions on what you could buy in supermarkets, and most people think BJ is shite, so they aren't reverring him.

noideaatallreally · 31/10/2020 07:37

Totally agree with you OP. I questioned time and time again the use of the word dictator to describe a democratically elected government introducing a sensible, short term measure. I am shocked to see how hight the infection rate is now, and it is even higher in England - very worrting when you have family there. At least in Wales our government has not been burying it's head in the sand and tried to respond more quickly.

Just over a week into the circuit breaker and both tin opener and kettle are holiding up. Shopping restrictions still seem sensible to me.

Allthestarsarecloser · 31/10/2020 07:40

The media & tories have done nothing but criticise Drakeford over this and the tone has been the same on here - even calling him a ‘dictator’ on here plays into that narrative. It’s not just about the supermarket rules, it’s been undermining of Welsh government decision making. Which is now looking clear thinking and decisive.

To think all those people calling the Welsh first minister a dictator can go eat their words...
OP posts:
cologne4711 · 31/10/2020 07:42

Nobody was criticising the 2 week lockdown in Wales, they were criticising the fact that the supermarkets were being told they could only sell so-called "essential" items. Though I see Belgium is now saying the same. NI and Ireland have lockdowns, nobody criticised theirs. It was the supermarket issue.

Although I’ve been saying for years that irons are non-essential Grin

cologne4711 · 31/10/2020 07:42

And of course the Tories criticised him, he's Labour! Do you expect anything else?

Allthestarsarecloser · 31/10/2020 07:43

This sums it up.

To think all those people calling the Welsh first minister a dictator can go eat their words...
OP posts:
BullBailey · 31/10/2020 07:44

OP You seem to be taking peoples dislike over his actions to heart? As I said, people’s feelings aren’t anti-Wales, just anti certain decisions he has made. At you feeling like people were criticising Wales?

BullBailey · 31/10/2020 07:45

A lot of us agree about our own PM!

northernmonkeys100 · 31/10/2020 07:46

So the British government following stupid rules makes the stupid rules right.
Get out of bed. It must be so uncomfortable after you wet yourself.
