To think that shops are gonna be absolute carnage tomorrow.

I've posted this for traffic.

I have bad anxiety with crowds and queues but I need to go into town tomorrow to pick up a few things from click and collect.

Obviously, news of maybe a national lockdown being announced on Monday.

Will people be flocking to the shops.

YABU - yes I'm going to do Christmas shopping tomorrow.
YANBU - No I'm not going to

Just come back from Waitrose. It was fine - no queues.

Mandalorian · 31/10/2020 11:29

@Faithtrusts

We went the Cheshire oaks yesterday and there were queues for near every shop and places to eat. Strange as we went about a month back and it was easy shopping.

My mum works in a shop that sells, gift boxes, toys, clothes etc and said it's been really busy with people buying what looks more like gifts Xmas shopping

It's always nuts this time of year. Half term in many areas and the build up to Christmas gets busier there.
GabsAlot · 31/10/2020 11:31

yes i think everyone will panic at more retial shops today-im doing mine online anyway

LucillevsLowkee · 31/10/2020 11:31

Not queues either, just normal Saturday crowds in shops, and all supermarkets have delivery slots available, even for tomorrow.

If people could stop banging on fear of panic buying, there wouldn't be any.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 31/10/2020 11:33

Chucking it down with rain, plus I have already finished my Christmas shopping so no plans to head to the shops here.

katienana · 31/10/2020 11:35

I've got a click and collect to get from Smyths then I'm largely done. I'm going to go to town at 9am Monday to get stocking fillers from Poundland and Tiger. I haven't really bought for adults yet but they can cope with a voucher or cash if it comes to that, kid presents definitely come first!

Bambooble · 31/10/2020 11:35

Town was quiet this morning, no doubt the weather wasn't too appealing. Hopefully people will remember that supermarkets stayed open throughout last time, and will this time as well.

theDudesmummy · 31/10/2020 11:39

We are already in lockdown 2.0 in Ireland, as someone said upthread. I wouldn't have physically gone out to Xmas shop anyway (haven't done so since about 2010!) so no difference for me here. And I will be ordering from local Irish companies not Amazon!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 31/10/2020 11:41

I'm off to Asda soon. Ugh. Not panic buying, just for my regular shop.

lljkk · 31/10/2020 11:42

Just now Very busy traffic, much more choked up roads than usual. Little market town in Norfolk that I cycle thru every Saturday morning at about same times. Village roads also seemed busier just now, too.

We are Tier 1 so the proposed changes could seem huge compared to what we have been taking for granted.

FatGirlShrinking · 31/10/2020 11:42

I've been into the city centre today and it was fine, most shops quite empty, no queues or craziness.

CovidAnni · 31/10/2020 11:46

Flowers to retail workers. V cold and torrential rain here. Not tempted.

Shizzlestix · 31/10/2020 11:48

Just back from Asda. Just like a normal Saturday.

PatchworkElmer · 31/10/2020 11:49

I’m nearly done. Only had 1 gift to get from an actual shop- which is sorted. Everything else we have left can be sourced online. And it’s for grown ups anyway, who will understand ‘you’re getting an amazon voucher because I’m not going out this year’. I’m glad I’ve sorted all the children.

TiersTiersTiers · 31/10/2020 12:11

What national lockdown?

I missed that announcement!

Why penalise the entire country for the ones that cannot follow the rules in certain areas!

Lock down the idiots and let the responsible areas continue to go about with DS, hand washing and following perfectly reasonable guidelines.

Yoffel · 31/10/2020 12:12

Gosh no, I’m all done and my sprouts are on a gentle simmer*

*This is a lie. I will do the vast majority of it online as I do every year.

TheGirlWhoLived · 31/10/2020 12:14

Our Tesco was absolutely HEAVING this morning. I was going to pop in and get apples for Apple bobbing but I turned around. About 50 people queuing outside

LucillevsLowkee · 31/10/2020 12:16

it's coming on Monday
DominaShantotto · 31/10/2020 12:35

Done half online - will do second half next payday. I'm late this year - normally finished by now but the kids are at that awkward point where their interests are changing over from young kid stuff to tweenager so I deliberately left it later than I normally do.

Marzipan12 · 31/10/2020 12:42

Not planning on Christmas shopping untill December. My kids understand this is a pandemic and also understand that main presents might come after its over of we carent get them. They will still get smaller gifts. I really don't understand the panic but then I haven't raised my kids to be materialistic.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 31/10/2020 12:44

@TiersTiersTiers the "responsible" areas? You mean the ones with lower population density that are able to better socially distance? Get lost.

Noitjustwontdo · 31/10/2020 12:45

I buy everything online, I always have done. I haven’t been Christmas shopping since way before I had children, there’s just no way I’d bother with it even at the best of times.

DH took our toddler to his toddler football group this morning and said the roads were absolutely packed so I’m suspecting lots of panic buying is happening again. Sigh.

diplodocusinermine · 31/10/2020 12:46

Just a quick plea - Amazon pay very little tax in this country so buying from them is a double whammy - taking business away from local businesses who do pay tax, which goes to the NHS, local services etc.

Shitfuckoh · 31/10/2020 12:49

Materialistic kids, responsible areas.
Fuck me, people on MN's can be such arseholes sometimes.

How about those 'materialistic' kids just deserve to have the Christmas they normally would after such a shit year?
How about not all of us in ''problem areas'' aren't being irresposible?

Since the kids have been back to school, i've seen no one outside of the school run because my childrens education matters & I wanted to do my 'part' to keep the chance of causing an outbreak as low as I possibly could. I do most of my shopping online, I'd have loved to have gone Christmas shopping in store this year as I usually would - for food treats & stocking fillers.
I'm in Tier 2 which states essential public transport only, I've stuck to that.
No mixing indoors - I've stuck to that.

So what if I want to give my children the Christmas they normally would have? That does not make me crazy nor does it make them 'Materialistic' - it means I'm trying to give them 1 normal thing which I can just about control, under shitty uncontrollable times.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 31/10/2020 12:49

Just a quick plea - Amazon pay very little tax in this country so buying from them is a double whammy - taking business away from local businesses who do pay tax, which goes to the NHS, local services etc.
They employ thousands of people so can’t imagine their contribution isn’t little. Not to mention giving all those people jobs.

Lots of firms have tax bases elsewhere and many businesses/self employed people use tax advantage rules that mean less tax is paid.
