To think we shouldn't have been questioned about our method of transport

I'd booked a meal tonight in a tier 2 restaurant. One bubble. This was clarified when I'd phoned earlier in week.

We arrived in 4 cars for various reasons.

The Front of house politely questioned how we could come 4 cars and still be in one bubble.

I have utmost of respect for the work hospitality staff do (I work similarly) but it's not their role to police our journeys.

You can't deny that one 'household' travelling somewhere in 4 separate cars is very unusual/odd so I can totally see how they might think you were bullshitting about being a household bubble!

I have had to covid secure a work premises. The requirements are onerous and we bear the legal responsibility for getting them right. Too right I'm going to ensure staff and visitors stick to them.

They get into trouble if they accept you and you aren't a bubble. Even in normal times having more than 2 cars for a table of 6 in the complimentary car park is taking the micky unless it's vast because it means other customers with one car are likely not to get a space!

But if they are confirming over the phone on booking that yiu are a household, then surely that is enough confirmation?

£10,000 fine would make me ask the question as well.

YABU. Arriving in 4 cars looks suspicious and you even said they asked politely. What’s the issue? They’re trying to look after the health of their staff and other customers.

I'm with the restaurant. It's a bit unusual for a bubble to have 4 adults, let alone for all adults to all arrive from separate places in their own car.

I dont think that's the case. My elderly mother Iives alone and is in our support bubble. Our household comprises me, Dh and our 23 year old son.

Honestly I think most people would assume that the four cars would come from at least three households so I don't think it's odd for them to ask and it's obviously their legal duty to do so at the moment.

They’re just doing what they think is right in a difficult situation.
They asked you politely what they had already checked when you made the booking so that they could be sure and covered their own backs.
And as far as I can see from your op they didn’t toss you in to the street whipping you, throwing poo at you whilst chanting shame, shame, shame. It just doesn’t seem like something I would get worked up over.

Exactly.

Assuming you're in England, a bubble can only contain happen for a single adult joining one other household. Therefore it's highly unusual for such a set up to consist of 4 or more adults that could each arrive independently (unless two were older teens / young adults that are old enough to drive but still living at home?).

A support bubble can be more than 3. A single adult household can bubble with another household, regardless of the number of adults in the second household.
There second household may have more than two adults in it, for example a flat share or adult (18+) children.

People really aren’t liking staff asking questions are they?

Customers need to learn staff matter too and it’s not ok to try and bend rules

Many people are going to lie and present they're in one household so they can meet for a meal or a pint so I think it's completely fair enough they asked because the penalties for them are huge.
