Sainsbury's self check out

The last few occasions I've been an over enthusiastic assistant has come up and swiped my basket literally as I'm removing the last item.

Today the assistant pressed finish and pay even though I was waiting for my kids to come back with their pumpkins which I needed to checkout. The shop was very quiet and nobody was waiting. The pumpkins were heavy but near the entrance which was why we hadn't carted them around the whole shop in a basket.

I still try to stick to the two metre rule and she just ignored it. In the local M&S and Waitrose they are more mindful of social distancing.

AIbu to be irritated?

I've not had this but I use the Smartshop app so .I've already scanned and packed by the time I get there.

The assistants have always seemed good about social distancing.

flaviaritt · 30/10/2020 15:07

So she leaned over you and pressed finish and pay?

TheWashingMachine · 30/10/2020 15:09

Yes

I’d probably say something. That would irritate me.

Noideawottodo · 30/10/2020 15:13

Rude! Use the Smartshop self scan system (not the app, its glitchy), the one you activate with a Nectar card. Its fab. Plus it wrong foots other customers when they see you putting stuff in your handbag as you go round Grin

SoupDragon · 30/10/2020 15:19

not the app, its glitchy

I've used it loads in a couple of different stores and it's fine.

The wifi is shit in my local store so they've stopped encouraging people to use it. So the app is probably fine to be fair but crap in our store (limited mobile reception as well!)

Can't speak for the "app", but the hand held scanners are pretty hit and miss too. It's clear they need to be connected to the WiFi to work (not quite sure why, but then they didn't pay me to design it) as every so often it will just freeze and eventually complain it couldn't find the price and to check wifi - which can involve a trip to the next aisle.

LagneyandCasey · 30/10/2020 15:31

Yes that was rude. Maybe she thought you needed help but she should have asked.

I use the app with no issues. I like the little animation you get at the end when you load your order into the till. It always makes me smile. Grin

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/10/2020 15:44

I use the app too. So much quicker.

Felifox · 30/10/2020 15:55

I use both Bodmin and Truro Sainsburys and it's the customers who are the problem. The staff are fine.

DGRossetti · 30/10/2020 15:59

it's the customers who are the problem

That's true of anywhere ... Grin

Why didn't you get the kids to fetch the pumpkins when you were ready to pay? Or just use a trolley? I get really irritated if I'm held up by people at the tills waiting for stuff to be brought to them. I know the shop was quiet, but you didn't know that would continue to be the case.

LouiseTrees · 30/10/2020 16:28

She might have thought you were looking confused about where the finish and pay button was or you might have turned round to look for the kids and she thought you were looking for her assistance. Who knows really. It’s not enough to complain to the store about though. At the time “ sorry , was just looking for my kids with their pumpkins”. However if it’s the same assistant every time just say “ wow that was a little too quick, could you please stand back a little “

TheWashingMachine · 30/10/2020 16:46

It is in an urban area, not too many trolleys.

if you are not ready to pay, don't go to the till! People are so annoying
IceBearRocks · 31/10/2020 07:00

It wouldn't annoy me enough to make a post on Mumsnet ...but it would annoy me!

garlictwist · 31/10/2020 07:47

I thought this thread was going to be out the sarky voice that Sainsbury's checkouts have. It gives me the rage. It hisses the words "Do you want a receipt?!" in an unnecessarily passive aggressive way.

MoonJelly · 31/10/2020 09:09

@TheWashingMachine

So why not get the kids to get the pumpkins before you went to the checkout?
SoupDragon · 31/10/2020 11:38

The pumpkins are irrelevant though. The member of staff shouldn't have leant over the OP to start pressing stuff on the screen.

wowfudge · 31/10/2020 11:42

Yes - how rude of her. When it's not busy the assistants on the self checkouts everywhere seem to be desperate to move baskets. And when they need to help you with a purchase that needs your age confirming, etc. so often they come over and don't even speak to you.

Oneborneverydecade · 31/10/2020 11:57

I'd give her a break. She's being paid not much more than minimum wage to run around helping often rude customers for hours. She's quite possibly going to be doing the job of two people on her own for hours. She'll probably get earache if the area looks untidy with too many baskets.
It's a crap job
