To send an email regarding nursery asking for donations to Samaritan’s Purse?

TeddyIsaHe · 30/10/2020 08:55

DD’s nursery are asking for donations to Samaritan’s Purse. Everything they stand for (very anti-LGBTQ and anti-Muslim) are against my beliefs. DD’s nursery is very diverse, including Muslim children.

Do I send a very chill email just explaining that? I guess they have no idea about it, which most don’t unless you do some digging.

Our schools Xmas fundraiser was this last year and I was none the wiser until another parent set up an adjacent fundraiser for our local women's aid for these reasons

marveloustimeruiningeverything · 30/10/2020 16:52

CraftyGin, good and proud? I feel that way by donating to worthy causes that don't have an ulterior motive that I disagree with. Like the current drive to fund school meals for local children whose families are struggling.

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 30/10/2020 16:55

So strange to see someone actively encourage taking advantage of vulnerable children.

MuddlingMackem · 30/10/2020 16:57

I've said YABU, but only because the UK organisation is not evangelical in the way the US one is. But they don't seem to think it is worth publicising that. Hmm

I know someone who has helped with SP in both the US and UK, and told me that the UK attitude is very different from the US.

MrsHerculePoirot · 30/10/2020 16:59

A few years ago I emailed my kids school and they stopped it. I’d be happy to message anyone my email if helpful (I’m sure someone can write a better one than I did though!)

acarp · 30/10/2020 17:05

Not liking an organisation that makes there staff sign a statement saying that they oppose same-sex marriage isn't hatred of evangelicals, its hatred of homophobia.

ViciousJackdaw · 30/10/2020 17:20

Telling others about Jesus is a key part of the Christian faith

No it isn't. Behaving as Jesus would is a key part of Christianity though and I am certain that if JC was around today, he would love the LGBTQs and the Muslims just as he was said to love everyone else. He's even in the Quran!

I get a couple of Rotary boxes each year from a friend and fill them up. They are distributed with no expectations or obligations.

ChaoticGouda · 30/10/2020 17:20

Thank you so much for writing to the manager, OP. As a lesbian I find it very disturbing how some charities use the promise of doing good to sneak past disgusting messages and funds to groups who have a vested interest in stripping people of their rights and safety. It reeks of emotional manipulation and dishonesty, imo.

I hope you and the nursery are able to find a lovely charity than can give children in need a wonderful Christmas. Bless you. Smile

PhilSwagielka · 30/10/2020 17:23

@CaraDuneRedux

Agree with taking approach of "it's a lovely idea, here are some reputable charities" e.g. rotary club.

Btw be prepared for this thread to go pfft - Samaritans Purse have lawyers like Rottweilers and have threatened MN with legal action in previous years.

How very Christian of them.
Pr1mr0se · 30/10/2020 17:26

You are being unreasonable - you don't have to contribute.

PhilSwagielka · 30/10/2020 17:27

@CraftyGin

Using the boxes to lure in unsuspecting impressionable young minds and baiting them to listen to stories about a deity they may or may not believe in is part of the Christian Faith?

Think how life transforming this might become!

Yeah, no thanks. People are allowed to believe in faiths other than Christianity and charity shouldn’t come with strings attached.

Link at the bottom to a template letter to send to your school/nursery/sports club to explain what SP are about and why you would rather they didn’t support them.

MissJeanLouise · 30/10/2020 17:53

I have in the past filled shoeboxes for SP and organised for my children’s primary school to collect them. I have also bought their ‘Christmas presents’ for people, eg. buy a goat/chickens etc, and have donated to their disaster relief appeals. I am a Christian and didn’t have a problem with bible stories etc being offered, but I didn’t believe there should be any pressure, or any link to aid being offered. A few years ago, I became more concerned that promoting these things, even without any apparent pressure, may make people feel obliged to accept them in order to receive aid. I also became more aware of Franklin Graham’s frankly indefensible views and support for Trump, and have decided I can no longer support the organisation. I still believe that there is a role for Christians to demonstrate love for others, in person and through charities, in helping those who are hungry, sick, vulnerable or whatever their need is, but that such love should be offered freely and without being linked to what could be seen as proselytisation. Would I like others to see God’s love through his people, and maybe even want to know more? Yes, but it’s up to them to seek God for themselves, I should be concerned with simply loving my neighbour.

YANBU.

This video from their own website makes their motives clear Reading this page and watching the video clearly shows boxes are only a bridge to their real purpose.

Pugdogmom · 30/10/2020 18:05

I emailed the Director of Education in my Council regarding Samaritans purse as their organisation does not fit in with the equality ethos of most Local Authorities. They redirected the school's in my area to other charities.

M0mmyneedswine · 30/10/2020 18:15

I would send the factual info. Our local schools collect for residential homes and the foodbank instead

SimonJT · 30/10/2020 18:23

Like many religions ‘charity’ work is used as a cover to take advantage of vulnerable people.

Its likely they don’t realise what they’re actually signing up for, my sons old nursery was going to use them a few years ago until several parents pointed out that they would be essentially promoting homophobia and islamaphobia.

It’s been covered plenty of times in the thread.

I’m bi. I’m also Jewish. I’m not donating to an org who thinks people like me are the scum of the earth. I’d rather give to a local charity or a food bank. I’m planning on doing the Food Bank Advent Calendar this year.

So you think homophobia, islamaphobia and anti-semitism are okay?
acarp · 30/10/2020 19:28

Given what she posted on the Trump thread, yes probably.

raddledoldmisanthropist · 30/10/2020 19:57

Telling others about Jesus is a key part of the Christian faith.

SP are Christian in roughly the same way that chip shop curry sauce is oriental cuisine- it's really testing the definition.

I'm sure many of the people who work for them are nice people doing their best from genuine faith, but they spend a lot of their resources on making the CEO wealthy and on spreading a fairly extreme interpretation of Christianity.

OP is not stopping anyone being generous by suggesting a more worthy cause.
