To send an email regarding nursery asking for donations to Samaritan’s Purse?

DD’s nursery are asking for donations to Samaritan’s Purse. Everything they stand for (very anti-LGBTQ and anti-Muslim) are against my beliefs. DD’s nursery is very diverse, including Muslim children.

Do I send a very chill email just explaining that? I guess they have no idea about it, which most don’t unless you do some digging.

@CraftyGin

YABU. Don’t take part if you don’t want to, but don’t stop others from being generous.
But it's not generosity. It's bigotry and the promotion of hatred.

Places of education have a duty not to promote hate groups.

Just have a reread and see how many people do not know what they are giving to and are appalled when they find out.

It is not to do with generosity, it is to do with ethics.[/quote]
They are giving shoeboxes with practical and fun products to needy children.

Mumofsend · 30/10/2020 12:51

@CraftyGin no. They are trying to convert children.

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 30/10/2020 12:51

@CraftyGin which are then used to manipulate those needy children. People can give generously without supporting hatred.

Telling others about Jesus is a key part of the Christian faith.

As a cover for trying to evangelise.

There are lots of good shoebox charities which offer no-strings-attached help, it is just that this one in particular is not a good one.

Justajot · 30/10/2020 12:55

@craftygin - suggesting an alternative wouldn't restrict anyone's generosity.

I've done the same - emailed Brownies with my concerns and they switched to another scheme without the same issues.

Using the boxes to lure in unsuspecting impressionable young minds and baiting them to listen to stories about a deity they may or may not believe in is part of the Christian Faith?

Think how life transforming this might become!

Thanks all - I emailed and the lovely manager was horrified. She had no idea. They’re going to find a different appeal.

@CraftyGin stop trying to be goady, it’s embarrassing tbh.

Which is pretty much what all of us were saying before you pitched up and accused us of being miserable misanthropes who wanted poor children to go without.

Look, I get it. You're an evangelical Christian who sees nothing wrong with using people's poverty as an opportunity to save souls at the same time.

I on the other hand prefer my charitable giving to come with no conditions attached to the receipt of it.

By all means accuse us of not caring about people's immortal souls along with their transient earthly well being. It's a fair cop - as an agnostic I don't actually believe in immortal souls. Looking after material well being will do fine for me

But you didn't do this. You came onto the thread and accused us of wanting to make sure poor children didn't get nice stuff.

Do you have Mustard Seed as an alternative on the mainland? In the Channel Islands they have been our 'go-to' organisation for Christmas appeals for many, many years. Yes, it has an Anglican base in terms of organisers, but as far as I know (and I used to work with one of the local organisers) they don't appear to try to 'convert' anyone to anything by the back door, they just want to give something to children they wouldn't normally receive at this time of year.

I have no idea of their LGBTQ stance, but I don't think Mustard Seed is thought of in the same way as Samaritan's Purse is? But happy to be educated!

We’ve been making “Love in a box” shoeboxes for Mustard Seed Mission for about 25 years.

I hadn’t really heard about OCC until the same echoed hatred gets spewed out on Mumsnet every-single-year.

I refuse to donate to anything evangelical-based as they use their 'charities' to push their religion.

I hope that makes you feel good and proud.
TeddyIsaHe · 30/10/2020 13:27

I think not supporting evangelical Christians who use toys and games to bribe Muslim children to convert to a religion would make most people proud.

@CraftyGin you’re derailing a thread that has some really good resources on it for children that need it. No one here is going to read what you’re writing and think, bloody hell! I must go to church immediately! I know I personally am out off by religion when things like this happens.

Diana received a shoebox when she was 8 years old and said, “That day I felt loved because people who didn’t know me gave me a gift. It changed my life. It was a beautiful gift from God.“

LaPampa · 30/10/2020 13:33

I’ve had to email every nursery and school my kids have gone to telling them this - each time they’ve been horrified and had no idea. Shocking the number of schools who do things without researching. It’s not like the (outline) info is particularly Hard to find - only takes a quick google to see it warrants further consideration at least.

Frdd · 30/10/2020 13:34

As long as people are clear what they’re donating to and happy to do so I don’t have an issue.

I personally don’t think Thenoperation shoebox people make it clear enough quite how pushy they are in terms of evangelism and I don’t think that is appropriate personally

TeddyIsaHe · 30/10/2020 13:35

It wasn’t a gift from God though, it was children in a school/nursery being fleeced for their kindness to give to a ‘charity’ that says that the devil is the architect of the devil, and the Islam is a very evil and wicked religion.

TeddyIsaHe · 30/10/2020 13:35

How do you justify sending plastic tat all round the world when money spent in the local area has a better effect?
