angry that Health Visitor has categorised ds as requiring additional needs

because he wears glasses.
Under new program in our area children are categorised as having core needs, additional needs and intensive needs dependent on how much input they require from Health Visitors.
Core = scheduled assessments for age with additional contact at parent's request. Additional = underlying condition or circumstances that require additional input/support from Health Visitors including extra monitoring of developmental skills. Health Visitor gave examples of Autism, Downs Syndrome, Developmental delay coming into this category.
Intensive = severe disability that requires high degree of input/specialist care.
Ds just had a 2 1/2 yr assessment, which he passed/ticked all boxes with ease, but was categorised as Additional because he wears glasses and has mild nystagmus. After discussion she has said she will discuss matters with GP and get back to me.
My view is that why waste resources on a perfectly normal child when people are crying out for support and not receiving it.

Seems OTT to me. If your DS has no other issues, and if he is being seen regularly by optometrist or preferably opthalmologist, it does seem unnecessary.

Agree about it possibly being a "waste" of resources.

My DS2 has additional needs too, so bad we were given the special needs pack by the ped, and he will need physio as well as other therapy. BUT the physio spends her time doing house visits to take down his medical history, and to follow up from their feedback following his assessment, and doing the actual development checks (which take two half days per child). I don't know when / if she does actual physio. This to me is a huge waste of resources....

Don't you just hate tick boxes? At that rate they'll have most ppl on it!

Is seen by Orthoptist every 3 months and Optician & Opthamologist annually. He is just slightly more long sighted than normal for his age.
Only additional need he has is a bit of help to put his glasses on straight as he hasn't quite mastered it yet!

I remember when I was told my dd had additional needs - because she's left-handed. I never heard anything again about it but honestly.....
