To think this women was being ridiculous

Trizzlenbizzle · 29/10/2020 23:29

I was walking my dog earlier and he stopped on the pavement to do a week against a lamp-post, standard dog behaviour.

A woman went past and made a passive aggressive comment about how it was disgusting that i'd let him wee there and that it was really unhygienic because we were outside a supermarket and 'near to food'.

This is ridiculous because in order to actually get into the supermarket and be near to the food, you'd have to go through the 2 sets of automatic doors!

I just gave her a look and walked on because I couldn't be arsed with an argument, but she was being ridiculous wasn't she?

OP posts:

Anyway, the majority of people have voted that the OP was not being unreasonable. I am going to step away from this thread now.
@AIMD

I clear my dog's shit up. I don't let her poo in front of houses and shops etc because that can be controlled. Weeing is a different kettle of fish because she is scent marking. It is nature. If I try to walk her along briskly then we will just leave a trail of pee behind us. And seriously? What harm does it do? It sinks straight into the ground. Just don't lick the pavements. It is much better than the mess humans are regularly leaving behind. (I Iive near the lake district and the amount of people shitting on the mountains and not clearing up after themselves was gross). actually can't wait to show this thread to all my dog owning threads. They are going to make their sides hurt from laughing.

When you own a dog, you can come to me and tell me how irresponsible I am and how much I am doing wrong.
Just to be absolutely clear....I don’t condone humans pissing or shitting in random places either! Though I find it funny you have mentioned humans puking, pissing and shitting in random places as disgusting but because you like dogs you see no problem letting them piss wherever is convenient for you.

Laugh about it with your dog friends all you want. I just happen not to think that people have some sort of right to own a dog and let it wee wherever they want just because they like dogs.

Honestly though. I know plenty of people with dogs who wouldn’t let their dog wee outside a shop doorway and to be honest I can’t remember ever seeing anyone let their dog wee outside a shop though I see them weeing in a multitude of more appropriate places every time I go for a walk. So thankfully a majority of dog owners are capable of getting the dogs to wee in suitable places.

alexdgr8 · 30/10/2020 01:28

i would also find this offensive.
in front of a food shop especially.
why take the dog that way.

1forAll74 · 30/10/2020 01:28

Dogs wee outside on lots of posts and tree trunks etc, they usually cock there leg up to wee where another dog has left a wee scent., they might do another wee further on if they smell another dogs wee in the grass etc,They are generally sniffing around all over the place.

DC3Dakota · 30/10/2020 01:29

@LEELULUMPKIN

They were just carrying my DDad's coffin out of our house to put it in the hearse to set off for his funeral when a guy walking past with his dog stopped and started to let it shit right in front of of our gates/driveway as the pallbearers passed him.

I am a dog owner and love them but I won't repeat what I said to him.

Unbelievable how scummy some people are.

How could the man possibly have stopped his dog from doing a poo?! Have you ever tried to stop a dog from pooing where they chose to?! It's totally futile. YWBVVVVVU to have a go at the poor man. Dogs choice not his!
msbevvy · 30/10/2020 01:37

It's not a great idea to let dogs wee on lamp posts. If one does it a whole load of others will follow suit and this can happen

CatAndHisKit · 30/10/2020 01:38

If a human was pissing up a lamppost it would be unacceptable and they would be fined.

Er that's because people have toilets built for them in public places, and dogs don't. When they need to go, you can't tell them not to, it's cruel. People breed and get dogs as pets, who then have natural needs just like people do - it's not their choice to be 'disgusting', they need to walk/exercise and to wee to live a life. Hmm

Quaagars · 30/10/2020 01:40

I'm not a dog fan, but surely that's what they do?
Pee up lamposts?! Grin
She's the one being weird.
Do this face Confused Hmm and walk on by lol

Is weeing on a tree better, a wall? The way male dogs wee is to raise a leg - if they did this not against something it would spray in the air / go on passers-by / go on grass in parks where someone may step in. The post weeing is best as it all ends up in one obvious place!
Needless to say you can't order a dog to wee when and where you decide they need to go once out - would you ostop a human mid-stream? in cities most dogs stay indoors for hours and already are so patient.

TheNewLook · 30/10/2020 01:52

As a non-dog-owner I think it’s disgusting how we have to accept dogs peeing and shitting everywhere. Even when the owner picks it up, it still turns my stomach to see animals defecating publicly.

mathanxiety · 30/10/2020 01:57

What's next - bird shit everywhere??

The cheek of them. They should all be lined up against a wall and shot.

CheetasOnFajitas · 30/10/2020 02:03

The woman was a bit crazy to say it out loud to you, but I do think that it is becoming less and less socially acceptable to let dogs wee on pavements. I used to live in a hot country and I noticed that all the dog walkers carried a bottle of water with them and would immediately sluice down the pavement/wall where the dog had peed. That was obviously to stop it smelling in the heat, but it would not be a bad habit for U.K. dog owners to get into.

StoppinBy · 30/10/2020 02:05

Sorry but I think YABU.

Take your dog for a walk on a grassed area where possible and teach them not to scent mark on things (which is very likely what he was doing on the lamp post rather than busting for a wee).

Don't let him piddle on things like shop corners and people's letterboxes. I am sure you have him house trained at home to hold on until he is out of the house, this is just a different form of house training.

The minute you see him sniff quicken your pace and encourage him past it, job done.

PawPawNoodle · 30/10/2020 02:09
@Polpotnoodle

If you want us to stop our dogs doing their business everywhere, what else do you suggest? I suppose we could train them to use the big, but mine is only little. She'd probably fall down it. I'd have to put armbands on her.
I didn't make any other comment apart from saying your post was unnecessarily graphic, but you carry on talking about putting things into your dogs genitals.

As an aside we've had both male and female dogs and have managed to train each of them to do their toileting on grass/against trees. Positive reinforcement is a very useful tool.

IhateBoswell · 30/10/2020 02:20

Weeing on trees isn’t good for the tree.

TheNewLook · 30/10/2020 02:24

This. Yet so many dog-owners claim their pets are a law unto themselves as soon as they leave the house. Why is that? If they know not to pee at home, why can’t they learn only to do it in other designated spaces? You can’t physically drag them away from my doorway but I’m sure you could drag them away from shitting on your bed.

MrMeSeeks · 30/10/2020 02:31

As a non dog owner, i think some of these replies are just ridiculous.
YwnbU at all.Hmm

mathanxiety · 30/10/2020 02:37

I'm not a dog owner either, and I agree with you, MrMeSeeks.

Dogs gonna dog...

noirchatsdeux · 30/10/2020 02:40

I hate dogs so yeah, that's disgusting.

Elsewyre · 30/10/2020 03:06

"Where would you like dogs to piss then? Should I be carrying a potty around for it to use?"

A non paved area?

Soomanybooks · 30/10/2020 03:20

We have a failed show dog, she doesn't wee (or poo) on the lead. So, obviously it is very possible to train a dog where to wee.

user1497787065 · 30/10/2020 03:23

Interestingly when I was in a town in Spain last year every dog walker carried a squirty water bottle and immediately sprayed water (assume it was just water) where there dog had peed.

BTW I have a dog myself and can't see what the issue is but just thought I would add this.

Ah you are being absolutely ridiculous here! You must have the most sensitive stomach going. Dog owners picking up after their dogs usually leave no trace, you know.
Katypyee · 30/10/2020 03:38

I am actually surprised at the amount of people who think a dog pissing on a lamppost or pavement is gross. Get a grip! It is just wee. Not like they have taken a big steamy turd there is it? It disappears.

My last dog was a male who had to pee on every lamppost. Just what dogs do.

You have people who get pissy (pun intended) when dogs wee on their gardens. Yet now people are saying dogs can't take a wee on a pavement or against a lamppost. Just exactly where can they wee?

I also think the woman's excuse about it being outside a grocery store was ludicrous.

Katypyee · 30/10/2020 03:41

And the suggestion(s) that we take a spray bottle of water with us to squirt every time our dogs take a wee outside is just ridiculous.
