to use both lanes

adogisforlife91 · 29/10/2020 15:36

A dual carriage way I regularly use has a section down to one lane for roadworks for about 9 weeks.

There are signs telling you how far until the merge and there is even a sign 800yards before the merge that says 'USE BOTH LANES' yet still people insist on sitting and queuing in the lane that's staying open. The queue then stretches back into the normal dual carriageway. One lane standstill, one lane empty.

Drivers then try and stop me from merging at the merging point because I've not been sitting in a queue like a mug, and have used the open lane (as directed!)

YANBU: Both lanes are open until the merging point. Use them.
YABU: Start queuing straight away like a good British Citizen.

Why on earth can people not just take it with them and dispose of it properly in a bin?

Because they hate you and your family and have no respect for anyone including themselves and being brutally honest wouldn't be a loss to the universe if they ceased to exist.

Meuniere · 29/10/2020 17:48

@BashfulClam

You are right but I’m ducked if I’ve had to queue for 10 minutes and you just zip down the other lane and expect to get right in front of me. You should wait.
But then why oh why did you not use the other lane rather than staying in that non moving lane for 10 mins???

I’m always amazed at people who do something they could have done themselves, is legal and they actually have been told to do (like using BOTH lanes) Then get irritated by others who have read the sign and followed instructions.

If you have an issue with waiting, just use the other lane fgs.

EatDessertFirst · 29/10/2020 17:54

I'm happy to wait in line, I'd be happy to merge in turn to drivers that are patient. What I don't appreciate is dickheads zooming up next to me at 90mph, putting their massive beemer or mercedes or chelsea tractor car two inches from my wing and gesticulating wildly, shouting out the window, eye-rolling etc expecting me to let them in. No. Fuck off.

I will continue to just wait. Its not worth the aggro or potential damage to my car thanks.

yellowcatss · 29/10/2020 17:57

you understand you have to wait for a gap in traffic when trying to move into it the other drivers have done nothing wrong they have right of way not you!

Plussizejumpsuit · 29/10/2020 18:01

Use the lane if you want but don't expect people who have waited longer to guarantee they don't have any trouble merging to let you in. I don't do what you do because people are don't let you in. When you can see everyone is waiting what makes you think you're more important and get to go more quickly? Doesn't matter what the signs say you can see what people are doing.

Plussizejumpsuit · 29/10/2020 18:02

What kind of car do you drive @adogisforlife91?

bettytaghetti · 29/10/2020 18:10

@Runmybathforme

It really pisses me off to see someone zooming along then expecting to merge at the last minute, I never let them in.
But they only appear to be 'zooming' because you're stationary. You're the one causing the traffic problem by refusing to let them in, but you'll never be able to understand that 🤷‍♀️

But no one would have any problem merging if everyone took it in turns. How hard is that to understand?
DelphineWalsh · 29/10/2020 18:24

You're right but you can't tell the British not to be a British queuer just because a sign says so.

BoingBoingyBoing · 29/10/2020 18:25

It's been shown time and again that the most efficient way to deal with 2 lanes merging into one is for drivers to use both lanes up to the merge point and then merge in turn.

If people don't understand that and want to sit in the left hand lane, then that's their lookout, but it's perfectly reasonable to use the available road and deliberately preventing people merging is just a dick move.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/10/2020 18:52

I think that for zip merging they should create a funnel in the middle of the two lanes at the merge point then no one can consider it their 'right of way'. Once merged into a single stream it can guided to the left or right lane depending where the road works are.

Elai1978 · 29/10/2020 19:11

The people who blindly queue in the left hand lane are the same thick cunts who are incapable of using a bus lane outside of its operating hours then get all pissy with you for sailing down the “bus” lane whilst they queue in the normal lane. Guess what dickhead, it ceased being a bus lane an hour ago!

Chickenwing · 29/10/2020 19:16

I do what you do and at the slow speed its easy to just merge forceably if people dont let you in. They are idiots for queuing needlessly.

I'd happily see such people prosecuted for driving without due care and attention. The due care and attention in this case being to read the fucking signs. Let them go to court and tell the beak "I never saw the sign". What else aren't they seeing (as they reply to that email ?)
spicedemerald · 29/10/2020 20:02

Why are so many people saying they wouldn’t let someone in while they’ve had to wait in a queue for ages? You don’t have to wait in it, you are choosing to. I choose to drive in the lane with no queue and merge correctly at the end.

WiddlinDiddlin · 29/10/2020 20:08

How difficult is merge in turn?

Being driven across france and belgium was a bloody revelation there, where very few people seem to take it personally when someone wishes to merge, people are neither up one anothers arses nor jamming on the brakes unnecessarily and merge in turn is a thing everyone seems to grasp.

Sunshine1235 · 29/10/2020 20:12

We have long term roadworks with the same issue here. Drivers insisting on sitting in the left hand lane and so creating longer queues and blocking up another road when often the right hand lane is clear. Then they sit in the middle of the road so you can’t pass on the right hand lane. There are several signs saying use both lanes and merge in turn but most people don’t seem to get it.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/10/2020 20:57

@WiddlinDiddlin

Which France were you in?

The one I go to seems to be packed with people who like to drive so close to me that I feel I should offer them an apero.

Meuniere · 29/10/2020 21:40

@Sunshine1235. Or you are creating a risk of accident when people arrive at full speed on a queue of traffic. And no roadwork sign is in sight either because the queue has become so long... (aka no warning)

safariboot · 29/10/2020 21:55

YANBU.

There was a one lane closure on a road near me, shortly after a box junction. Numpties not using both lanes, to the point of stopping in the yellow box even when one of the exits was clear or straddling both lanes in the exit, contributed to delays around the junction.

BoingBoingyBoing · 29/10/2020 21:58

Because they are twats.

TheRogueApostrophe · 30/10/2020 07:42

I think OP is BU for that. You only use both lanes when traffic is flowing, not in a jam.

There's only a jam because every other idiot is choosing to sit in one lane. If the other lane is free, it should be used. If both lanes are jammed, both lane should still be used. Why is this so difficult to understand?

I had an idiot pull out in front of me to sit in the middle of two lanes to prevent me from overtaking him recently. So effectively making both lanes slow moving. It's absolute idiocy but having read this thread I can see the roads are full of them. This ridiculous attitude that people are "pushing in". You people genuinely don't understand how to use the road. I'm wondering what other mistakes you make.

And runmybathforme - It really pisses me off to see someone zooming along then expecting to merge at the last minute, I never let them in You are completely in the wrong with this attitude. You clearly don't understand how to drive properly.

maddening · 30/10/2020 07:56

They need to.change the signage to "remain in lane then merge in turn," imo, if people were instructed to stay in lane they would not feel like piss takers and comply too early.

TabbyStar · 30/10/2020 08:07

They need to.change the signage to "remain in lane then merge in turn,

I think I'm seeing more of this about, but why it's not standard I don't know.
