My colleague, and she is my boss, have become really close friends over the two years we’ve known each other. She and I have just really hit it off and we’re both really happy to have made good friends; unusually maybe it makes no difference that she’s younger than me a bit, and my boss.

We’ve been chatting tonight and were talking about terrorism and prejudice.

I am from a third generation northern Irish Catholic background in the U.K. with relatives who we were close to as kids, our cousins in Belfast. She is a second generation Pakistani Muslim daughter of immigrants.

We both feel that our backgrounds are really similar in terms of prejudice and people lumping extremists in with totally normal people because of their faith.

Are we being unreasonable to think that it’s totally irrational hatred given that my background is currently less hated than hers although it definitely was in the 20th century?

And that our cultures actually have a huge amount in common?

We both just felt, I guess, that this whole attitude was totally irrational and most people of whatever culture are “normal” and the current islamophobia is a bit like what catholics faves three decades ago.

Yes agreed, these things do go in waves. Racism and intolerance isn't a personally held view, it comes from a spread of them vs us thinking

I guess she has it harder in terms of this because despite my granny being from Belfast, I’m white and have a local accent whereas she is brown and wears hijab. So more obviously “other”.
