That really?

I am drinking ALOT, i caught myself on last week when i drank a bottle of red wine and didn't have a hangover 😱 then i looked back on the week. 3 bottles of wine and a couple bottles of cider. Harry westons which is really strong.

I had a stressfull week and that was more than i usually drink but probably since lockdown im drinking most nights if not every night. Its usually 2 glasses of wine or a bottle of cider.

Thats too much and i need to stop, or cut back. So this is day 3 with no alcohol. Last night i really fancied a drink but i didnt have one, tonight ive not wanted any.

Im on ADs so i know its not a good mix.

I just wondered really how i compare to others?

Hardly anything. A glass of wine or so every couple of months. Sometimes a liqueur about once a year.

TheoriginalLEM · 29/10/2020 13:36

Those of you that dont drink in the evenings, what treats do you have instead? Ive tried tonic without gin = indigestion. Alcohol free wine = indigestion and tastes shit.

I need to address my weight, but one step at a time eh!

I drink about 1.5 less. I don't drink Monday - Thursday, I'll have a few glasses on a Friday, Saturday and a Sunday. I'm still losing 2LB per week, and I'm perfectly healthy.

I love wine, I drink it mindfully and for the enjoyment, not to get drunk (though I don't dislike being gently pissed). I spend about £15 per bottle, which has encouraged me to drink it more slowly and with real enjoyment so that I'm not wasting money.

(I realise to some people that is a waste of money, but then I would say the same about Yankee candles or going to Disneyland).

LittleGwyneth · 29/10/2020 13:37

1.5 bottles a week, or a little less, that was supposed to say. Would bloody love an edit button, MN.

lljkk · 29/10/2020 13:47

probably I have 1 drink 3-4 nights/wk. I know it's not good for my health & of concern given I have alcoholic family history. That said, it's not excessive by usual standards. Most tempted on days when I'm tired. I have recently discovered pink gin. Blush Gin

doadeer · 29/10/2020 13:51

I drink small but often. I usually have a small wine in the bath 4-5 nights a week. Max I drink is two glasses. I've got a toddler and it's just not worth a heavy head!

jojogoesbust · 29/10/2020 13:51

I have 2 glasses of wine on Fridays and Saturdays. I did have a baileys before bed last night though...its almost Christmas! Never normally drink on a work night

corythatwas · 29/10/2020 13:52

I think there are several issues mixed up here, each of which could be a problem:

the first is why you drink- are you addicted, could you stop, do you use it as a crutch to deal with difficulties?

the second is problems caused in your daily life- can you keep up with work, are you struggling socially?

Some posters on this thread have treated these two as if they were the only things that mattered: as long as you're ok regarding these two, you can't come to any harm.

But that ignores the potential physical impact of drinking which isn't necessarily dependent on any of the above.

The traditional wine-drinking countries are said to have a relatively low proportion of social disturbance caused by alcohol. But they also have a very high proportion of liver disease and other physical issues caused by high consumption. In other words, plenty of old codgers who have functioned fine socially and professionally all their lives, never appeared to have a drink problem, but whose livers have still taken a heavy hit. The truth is, the liver doesn't care if you're organised and pleasant and conscientious.

My late MIL was certainly not an alcoholic in the traditional sense. She did her work without problems, she was a truly lovely person, never caused any trouble to anyone or neglected anyone in her care. When she was widowed and unhappy, she took care not to drink, so you could not call her addicted either physically or emotionally.

Otoh it is likely that her fairly heavy regular alcohol consumption contributed to her diabetes. That much sugar just isn't good for you. Her body didn't care that she was a "good" drinker.

Bluesheep8 · 29/10/2020 13:58

I drink Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. 1 and a half bottles of white wine per night. So that's 4 and a half bottles per week. So not good. I tell myself that I don't drink Monday to Thursday, and nor do I remotely want to, but I know it's still far too much Blush

JeffVaderneedsatray · 29/10/2020 14:14

I probably drink about 3 or 4 large glasses of wine a week. Often less. I used to drink more but became aware of how I felt the following morning. I thought I would lose weight as well but it seems to have had no effect.
In the holidays I might drink a bit more but it is likely to be a G and T instead of wine because I just don't like how I feel the next day.
DH drinks far too much and it worries me. I am currently midway through a health scare and I am concerned about his health should anything happen to me.
I am plucking up the courage to mention it.
DH never seems to be hung over on what he drinks but I can be hung over on a couple of glasses.

DollyParton2 · 29/10/2020 14:53

DarkMintChocolate you don’t need to worry about what you drink because you hardly drink. You even list, with such planning and precision precisely what you drink on Christmas Day??! Just chill out and let yourself go. Genuinely amazed at how many straight laced non drinkers there are on here.

cultkid · 29/10/2020 14:56

Sorry it should say half a bottle a night for the last few months

ViciousJackdaw · 29/10/2020 15:38

I'm concerned about my own drinking. I've had one bottle of lager in the last six weeks. That simply isn't enough.

SpnBaby1967 · 29/10/2020 17:20

I used to do 1 bottle a week, then over lockdown it crept up to 2 or 3 bottles. At the beginning of July DH and I started healthy eating. Since then I've had one evening where I shared a bottle of prosecco and a bottle of wine with a mate, that was August. Then one weekend I really fancied some prosecco, so had a bottle over the weekend and finally last weekend I fancied wine so had a bottle again over a weekend.

So that's 1.5 bottles of prosecco and 2.5 bottles of wine over 4 months.

But, I rarely drink mid week (lockdown not withstanding) and rarely have more than 1 bottle a week. So no, I dont have a problem and this was proved by how easy I cut it out.

Lol, I take baclofen, a muscle relaxant. It potentiates alcohol, and alcohol potentiates it. 2 drinks have the effect of 12 on me. It is no fun and embarrassing to go from O to paralytic, and being sick that quickly!

I have to drink slowly with food!

dementedma · 29/10/2020 18:08

Far too much, and yes

I hit my lifetime limit in my early 30's and have stopped since then. Life for me is better without it. Note the word toxic in intoxicated.

JaceLancs · 29/10/2020 19:47

I’m very disappointed had an alcohol free really good diet week and lost a measly half a pound!
I’m back to drinking just at weekends until Xmas

I do drink tonic by itself, or non alcoholic beer (some are foul, some are ok), but usually have a cup of decaf tea. Ha.

Ivy455 · 30/10/2020 10:17

I think I drink too much, maybe 4 bottles of wine a week and the odd ready mixed can of gin here and there. I really need to cut back.

Dipi79 · 30/10/2020 10:17

If it's concerning you, then it's a problem for you in the here and now, I guess?
As a recovering Alcoholic, I'm on the extreme edge, but I think if you are feeling uneasy around it, cut back/out.

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 30/10/2020 10:18

I like tonic without gin (not helpful, sorry!) or soda water and lime, sparkling water, virgin mojitos.

Maybe try making some virgin cocktails?

I used to drink a lot - about 45 units a week - but cut down massively in 2015, mainly because I realised that my husband was an alcoholic and I might be heading that way. These days I don't drink at all on weeknights and very little at weekends. The benefit is that this way I can afford posh gin.

As a rule, if you're worried about your drinking there's something to worry about. On the other hand you clearly have insight so you should be able to cut back and work out a routine that you enjoy and are comfortable with.

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 30/10/2020 10:20

...a lot of sugar in those though. I really like sparkling water, with a bit of sugar free squash or cordial in.
