Quarantine checks

I've nc for this. My sister is planning to take the kids to Disneyland Paris for Christmas for a few nights. Sounds wonderful until you factor in covid! She's not bothered by it and thinks it will be so much quieter so a good time to go. But she can't quarantine for 2 weeks once home as the kids would be back at school about 10 days later and she works. She thinks no one will find out. It makes me nervous just thinking about it. I've told her my views which are personally that she's stupid for considering it anyway quarantine or no quarantine. At best if she insists on going the least she could do is bloody isolate like you have to.
So is she right? Do people actually visit people's houses to make sure they're in? Or just a phone call where you can lie? Her teenage son won't stay in at all I'm certain of that. I've googled about it and can't find that much info. Apart from the fine is up to £1000? Which I think she will just pay! Aibu to think she's deluded?

She's a fool, and a selfish one at that.

She’s the reason it’s spreading

But let’s hope France is on lockdown as cases are rising alarmingly over there

Schools here will probably be closed by jan as Christmas sounds like it will be a free for all over here with households mixing doing as they like!

Maisymooster · 28/10/2020 11:23

Oh I wonder if it would go on lockdown. That would stop her!

Macron is on French news tonight with an announcement about further measures. So I doubt she will be going.

Yes they do check randomly and if they don't get a reply they forward it on to the police to
Visit and make sure their complying with the quarantine rules.

Yes she might be lucky and she's home when they carry out the checks or even luckier that they don't bother checking, But from what I've seen it's towards the end of the quarantine period they tend to do these checks (3-4days to go) as I assume they know people will start to get bored and flout the rules nearer the end.

If she can quarantine for 10 days that may well be sufficient by then as there are moves to reduce the 14 days to 7.

Maisymooster · 28/10/2020 17:39

Check how though? Calling or actually knocking at the door? It sounds unbelievable that people would actually do the latter so on that part I agree with her she probably would get away with it!

The initial contact is by phone to check, if they do not get an answer they send the police round. There's no set time for either phone call nor for the police visit so yea she may well get away with it.

I’m currently self isolating at home due to travel (I’ve moved back here from overseas) and I got a phone call at home that I missed because I didn’t get to the phone in time and then a second call on my mobile. I’ve another week to go so it’ll be interesting to see if they check again or even visit. I’ve heard other people not getting any contact and others getting a visit so I think it’s just randomly done.

Yes my DB got a call 2days after returning from Gemany last week. He missed the call (in the shower!) and called back to get a recorded message saying PHE would call him that afternoon. They didn't but they rang him on his home landline the next day.Apparently spoke with a really nice bloke who said people often didn't answer their phones. Just reminded him to see isolate yadayadayada

Previously he had been in France in August and was annoyed that they hadn't bothered.

Someone I know recently got back from France and was quarantining but v relaxed about it (so relaxed I wasn't informed until we'd been invited to their house for lunch). A week later the whole family has COVID and we're self isolating.

Mindymomo · 31/10/2020 13:51

There was a case in the paper this week of a student being fined £6,500 for not staying in when she should have been in quarantine and had posted on facebook restaurant trips. You are required to fill in forms with contact details.

Disneyland is closed at the moment. They are hoping to open at Christmas, but given that France is in full lockdown again, that might not happen.

ninninannonoonoo · 31/10/2020 15:55

I shouldn't worry, your sister is going to be rethinking her plans.
