Ok so I'm unashamedly posting in AIBU for traffic.

AIBU that I have a whole Camembert, a bottle of Malbec and a need to watch the scariest fucking film you can recommend on Saturday night?

Hit me with your scary films. Aliens aren't scary. Saw shat me up.

Japanese ring and Japanese version of The grudge, also woman in black is pretty good!!

par05 · 27/10/2020 21:58

Ooooh us is creepy too and get out! Two films with twist endings.

faithfulbird20 · 27/10/2020 21:58

Halloween the original one and the most recent one...I nearly gave birth...

BabloHoney · 27/10/2020 22:04

There’s also a great indie horror film called My Little Eye. It’s probably 20 years old now, I saw it at the cinema and found it really scary. I’d love to know if anyone’s seen it recently, it may seem dated and not at all scary now!

LazyLucille · 27/10/2020 22:19

Sinister is the only truly scary film I have seen.

sst1234 · 27/10/2020 22:20

Genuinely curious why hereditary gets so many votes. Found it overrated.

sst1234 · 27/10/2020 22:22

The Omen, original one from the 70s. In fact 1970s films generally feel naff today, except for the horror ones. The Exorcist is still the scariest horror movie ever made.

OytheBumbler · 27/10/2020 22:24

I've loved horror films all my life but never been truly affected until I saw the original Japanese 'Ring'. I couldn't watch any horror films for years after that.

Things that are gory etc like 'Saw' just don't affect me. 'Wolfs Creek' was pretty good though.

blue25 · 27/10/2020 22:29

Midsommar
Hostel 2
Wolf Creek
Candy Man

MozzchopsThirty · 27/10/2020 22:32

@sst1234 totally agree about hereditary

One of the most awful films I've seen, at the end most of the cinema burst out laughing

Not scary at all

shas19 · 27/10/2020 22:38

Midsommar
The seasoning house
Hills have eyes
Insidious
Mara
Tusk
American Mary
Evil dead
Pet
Last house on the left
I spit on your grave
What lies beneath

BrimFullOfAsher · 28/10/2020 07:53

The Mothman Prophecies freaked me out a bit. I think because it's based on true events and theory

56478903421e · 28/10/2020 07:57

The Nun

Loubylou79 · 28/10/2020 07:59

If you like more realistic horror ...The Strangers and Eden Lake are up there with the best

DerekMorganswife · 28/10/2020 09:22

Another vote for The Woman in Black. Just a good old fashioned ghost story with no gore (I think it's a 12) but plenty of screamy/jumpy bits.

unicornpower · 28/10/2020 09:36

I don't understand the hype with hereditary either, actually LOL'd at the majority of it.

It does depend on what you find scary as they're all so different.
Paranormal Activity
Sinister
Halloween (The original or the newest version)
The Exorcist
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
The Conjuring (I preferred the second one but they're both decent)
The Haunting in Connecticut
Hostel
Would you Rather
Truth or Dare
Wolf Creek
A Nightmare on Elm Street
The town that dreaded sundown
Vacancy
Last House on the Left
I Spit on your grave
Eden Lake
Psycho

I love a good horror!

cherrybakewelllll · 28/10/2020 10:37

Wow lots of suggestions, thank you!

We watch things like American Horror Story etc and it doesn't make me flinch. I'm not scared by anything paranormal etc. I suppose gore does play a factor in terms of I'm rarely scared but if I was that might do it?

Insidious seems a front runner, I'll have a little google of it now!

I found It Follows to be a terrifying film. Each to their own, on paper its a daft premise. Another vote for the UK version of Ghost Stories (both films are on Netflix, I think). Recently released Saint Maud is also good, although I would call it a horrifying drama than pure horror.

hardyloveit · 28/10/2020 12:12

Loads of these films are actually based on real events! Makes it even scarier I think

MozzchopsThirty · 28/10/2020 12:45

I get way more scared by paranormal, possession type films that could happen (catholic, albeit a crap one)

Gore & stuff just doesn't bother me, or interest me really

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 28/10/2020 13:03

@Burnthurst187

Insidious made me jump a few times but I've never been scared by a film. One thing that I found very unsettling though was in the Blair Witch when deep in the woods in the dead of night they hear young children's voices laughing outside the tent
I don't scare easily either but Blair Witch Project was something else. I wasn't scared when I watched it in the cinema but when I got home and tried to sleep, that's when it hit me!
Feellikefrighteningyeah · 28/10/2020 13:04

Are there any films that are scary but no gore at all?

Puddlepop · 28/10/2020 16:29

The Others is an elegant one, no gore. I liked It Follows, Woman in Black, original The Ring, Hostel... ie the ones that have creepy backstories and maybe less of the sudden crashing jumping off the seat types.

Nonotthisagain · 28/10/2020 16:48

Watched Host the other day - it was filmed in lockdown. Definitely scary and it's normally my type of horror.

If you like Eden lake you'll like Cherry Tree lane.

Ashard20 · 28/10/2020 16:51

Salem's Lot - 1980's original with David Soul and James Mason.
There are two scenes in that that still terrify me today - but I won't give them away in case you haven't seen it.

Also for macabre and atmospheric suspense, Don't Look Now with Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland.
