Semi inspired by another thread but I'm curious what other people think.

To ask you what do you think is my ethnicity?

Jedi

Mysterydna · 28/10/2020 10:35

But you can be a Jedi from any background!

Mexican

Mysterydna · 28/10/2020 11:08

Well @willitbetonight you got it half right (and the only one who mentioned Mexico) so well done Gin

Ha I've just read the full thread!

CatMagic · 28/10/2020 11:33

Is this for some degree project? I've noticed mumsnet tends to be used for research.

itsovernowthen · 28/10/2020 12:31

@Mysterydna

Well everybody tells me I'm white and some take offense of me saying I'm a POC. Maybe I don't look like one but genetically I should be very much "brown". It's also denying the discrimination both sides of my family have suffered.

I think if your hair was it's natural colour, you'd probably get a very different response/comment from people in terms of your ethnicity, as it looks to me that it was originally a lot darker than it currently is.

That doesn't take away from you or your family's experiences, and you should be able to categorise yourself in the way you see fit (cultural appropriation a la Dolezal not withstanding!).

Tsubasa1 · 28/10/2020 12:35

Brazilian or south american

Mysterydna · 28/10/2020 12:52

That's me with natural (and very unnatural) hair colour. Would be interesting to see if anybody can see the other half of my heritage.

Iran?
Lebanon?

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 28/10/2020 13:25

I think you look Eastern Mediterranean. I’d have guessed Cypriot.

I’m a heady mix of Ashkenazi Jewish and Scottish but non-native English tend to guess either Southern European or French.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 28/10/2020 13:26

Non-native English speakers, that should be.

CountFosco · 28/10/2020 13:35

I just saw this post today. MIL is from South America and I have a few friends from central and south America. I think you do look NA/Mexican but it's not an ethnicity that British people really pick up on so it doesn't surprise me that it took ages for people to pick up on it, what do peoole in America think you are? DH passes as white here (his father is British and he has a British name and accent) but Americans always pick up his ethnicity.

Mysterydna · 28/10/2020 13:38

@CountFosco most people in the US either think I'm quintessentially Jewish or racially ambiguous but they generally don't pick up I'm half NA.

Interesting thread. I'm a bit confused about you using Native American and Mexican interchangeably though. Just wondering if you could explain that bit please.

Changethetoner · 28/10/2020 14:12

Eastern European - Romanian?

Mysterydna · 28/10/2020 14:16

That is because the 50% is from the Purépecha group see - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pur%C3%A9pecha

They're an indigenous group native to Mexico. Genetically though, most indigenous groups from the Americas are fairly similar, thus why I use the term Native American (also American can apply to the whole continent and not just the US).

DNA companies call them NA too regardless of where they are in the continent.

Petportraits · 28/10/2020 14:23

Romanian?

dewdropps · 29/10/2020 02:45

This is so interesting really. If you look white but aren't, what 'box' do you tick on forms.

dewdropps · 29/10/2020 02:52

Also do you class yourself as Jewish religion wise. It's a confusing area for me as Jewish seems to be classed as a culture or race in a way that is like being English from England but not like a religion. My family are Christians and go to church, I don't believe like them so am an atheist, this isn't the same as Jews?

Casschops · 29/10/2020 02:56

A beautiful human?

CutToChase · 29/10/2020 06:22

My instinctive reaction was to say you look Jewish but I didnt because
A) I dont know if that's an ethnicity and
B) I thought it could sound offensive

AndIquote · 29/10/2020 06:33

I thought Columbian, I can see a likeness to Shakira.

Mysterydna · 29/10/2020 08:16

@dewdropps I always tick "Other" in the US "Latino". We also make the difference between "Jew" (as in ethnicity) and "Jewish " (religion). You can most certainly be an atheist Jew.

Sidenote, it's "Colombia" so the nationality is "Colombian".

Columbia is a District in the US - Washington D.C.

Persian, there are a few things that give it away!
But maybe with some English and/or Eastern European genes?
