AIBU to blow the new kitchen budget on a boiling tap

taxxigirl · 27/10/2020 16:44

As above, really. It's a huge chunk of my budget, but it would be a timesaver and also no need for a kettle on the counter.

Does anyone have one? Is it worth it?

@tenlittlecygnets

God, no. A kettle is £25 and boils in 2mins...

And what if you get mixed up and run the boiling tap when you meant to run the cold tap?! 😱

To get boiling water you have to move the cuff up and down twice (quite quickly) and then twist it to the right. To get cold water you use the usual lever near the base of the tap and turn it to cold.

Quooker - had it for 11ish years.

Quooker holds the water in the tank at above 100 which means it comes out of the spout at 100.

I’m in a hard water area so get it serviced every couple of years. No problems so far.

yelyah22 · 27/10/2020 21:54

We have one at work, makes shite tea! And takes up a lot of room under the sink, and breaks all the time. Bet it was a 'cheap' one, though, to be fair.

SNStoday · 27/10/2020 21:54

Have a Quooker, love it more than many things in life. No problems with reliability so far, or with scummy tea or safety. Just joy at never waiting for the kettle to boil again and instant hot water for the pasta.

pinkstripeycat · 27/10/2020 21:55

Don’t do it! My sister has one and it’s awful. Splashes up all the time!

Sausagis · 27/10/2020 22:07

The way I read it, it costs 3p a day for a quooker "to be on standby" (ie keep the water ready for use). If you actually use boiling water (which I hope you would) it would cost more.

Of all things that could bring joy to my life, this wouldn't even be in the Top 10000
What's so arduous about boiling a kettle?

Scrunchcake · 27/10/2020 22:16

We have one. It was already here when we bought the house a few months ago. It's handy but I wouldn't choose to have another one - for the upfront cost plus the £36 filter every 6 months its just not worth it (for me)

RaspberryCoulis · 27/10/2020 22:32

Ours is an Insinkerator I think. No issues with hard water here - lovely soft water. Can see how it would be an issue in other parts of the uk though. We've changed the filter once in 2 years, no problems with it at all.

MajesticWhine · 27/10/2020 22:36

I have a Quooker and it's great. It needs a service once a year though, which is a drag.

Sammysquiz · 27/10/2020 22:39

They’re shit for tea. The water needs to be freshly boiled for a decent cup. I can always taste when it’s been made from one of these taps.

Skysblue · 27/10/2020 22:45

Everyone I know whp got one hd endless problems with them involving repairment / replacement parts etc etc

Too much hassle for me. I have a tap and a kettle and neither ecer need a repairman!

alexdgr8 · 27/10/2020 22:47

@HappyPumpkin81

I splashed out on a £5 kettle from Tesco because it lit up with a blue light instead of the non lighting up kettle for £3, it is still going strong 14 years later. I can't help thinking that these taps are a huge waste of money and a health and safety hazard!
bravo ! that's the way to be a happy pumpkin. a pumpkin after mine own heart.
Purplewithred · 27/10/2020 22:48

I’ve had a Quooker for about 5 years or so now and I love it and it’s never broken down. It also supplies the ordinary hot water tap which has saved us money as the hot water tank is two floors up so running the hot tap in the kitchen used to waste loads of water.

It is at tepee top of the list for any future kitchen.

boredwithmylastusername · 27/10/2020 22:50

We have got one , it's perfect , couldn't imagine life with a kettle now

gottakeeponmovin · 27/10/2020 22:52

It's the best thing I have in the kitchen I love it

TheDogsMother · 27/10/2020 23:01

It was the same thing that was going to blow my budget so I can't really miss what I didn't have. A friend had a kitchen refit at the same time and she said if she were to save money anywhere it would be the Qooker tap.

mumoftinyterrors · 27/10/2020 23:09

Don't bother. Every plumber I've spoken to says they constantly break and cost a fortune to repair. I've just had my kitchen done and we decided against one of these for that reason.

AnnaSW1 · 27/10/2020 23:09

I had one. I prefer the kettle.

notapizzaeater · 27/10/2020 23:09

I've been looking at getting one - One of the high end ones you can put the water tank in the kick board - so it doesn't take cupboard space.

HotToCold · 27/10/2020 23:14

I think they are dangerous

HeronLanyon · 28/10/2020 05:12

‘A water tank in the kick board space’ having never thought closely about them I didn’t realise a water tank was necessary. That increases my (possibly irrational And definitely not based on actual knowledgeGrin) feeling that they aren’t ‘clean’.
With a kettle I can easily see it is clean/descale it as and when and replace it when necessary cheaply and easily.
Interesting so many love them when they have them. I haven’t made that leap yet.

Mine hasn't broken at all, good as the day i bought it
00100001 · 28/10/2020 07:02

@HotToCold

I think they are dangerous
Why?

Theyre safer than a kettle I feel. Especially when users have arthritis or can't lift/hold kettles safely.

maggiemuff · 28/10/2020 07:51

The one in our house is around six years old and we have had no problems with it. I love it as I don't have to have a kettle sitting out and don't have to wait for water to boil, and it gives cold filtered water.
