AIBU to blow the new kitchen budget on a boiling tap

taxxigirl · 27/10/2020 16:44

As above, really. It's a huge chunk of my budget, but it would be a timesaver and also no need for a kettle on the counter.

Does anyone have one? Is it worth it?

we have a 4 in 1 tap (normal hot and cold and filtered cold and 100 deg boiling).

Love it, saves so much time and space and doesn't take up that much space under the sink.

It wasn't cheap though at just over £1000

Not all of them are 100 deg boiling, tea tastes crap from the ones that arent. we have them at work and those ones arent 100 deg boiling :(

ours matches the kitchen too as its copper

notdawn · 27/10/2020 17:08

We’ve had no issue with ours in 3 years - but we use the suggested filters every 6 months.

claireb7rg · 27/10/2020 17:08

@lostguider

The quooker one is the only one that has water at 100 degrees others are at 99 degrees. We have a grohl one and love it. We have it on the otherside of the kitchen at the drinks station.
not true, ours is a franke and its 100 deg boiling
LightDrizzle · 27/10/2020 17:09

We inherited one when we moved house and would now never be without one. They are fantastic. I do drink a lot of tea though.

BrimfulOfBaba · 27/10/2020 17:11

Wondering if the boiling water from these taps impairs the flavour of coffee? As you're meant to use water "off the boil" for ground coffee, for example. I want one of these taps but not sure about this aspect.

SunshineCake · 27/10/2020 17:12

My friend got one after her dh set fire to the kitchen twice with the kettle. I'd love one but my head can't trust it Confused.

BeigeFoodLover · 27/10/2020 17:15

We didn’t go for it in the end when we did our kitchen, we were advised on a specific make (not many of them are actually ‘boiling’ and make foamy tea) and also, I didn’t want to lose the space under my sink for the tank!

PlateTectonics · 27/10/2020 17:17

We decided against when redoing our kitchen. It only takes 2 mins to boil a kettle! But then I'm not a big tea drinker anyway.

Rotundandhappy · 27/10/2020 17:20

In my experience they break and then you are left with a useless item on your counter top. Or a hole in your counter top.

Adele12345 · 27/10/2020 17:24

I looked into it a lot when getting our new kitchen and the ones that were good were around £1500+.

Some of the cheaper ones didn’t have a filter so could get limescale build up (extra costs involved getting limescale control and a filter) and they only “boil” to 95 degrees.

It’s also actually cheaper to run a kettle than it is a boiling tap.

I love them...but we had just bought the house and I didn’t have the spare £ to justify £1500+ on the tap!

DroppedIt · 27/10/2020 17:26

@FlyingFlamingo

I worry about the safety - what stops one of the dcs accidentally washing their hands with boiling water? Is there a safety mechanism built into it to stop this?
With the ones at our work you have to do two things to make them work - cover an infra red thingy and also press the button. I have assumed they all have something like this?
Wexone · 27/10/2020 17:35

Have one love it - Hate seeing a kettle on a counter now. Not a fancy brand ( dunno what it is called) never had to change filters in it and its never broken. In the house 6 years now and used nearly every hour. Would be lost with out it - We also used to have to replace our kettle every year due to the water - this hasn't affected the tap at all. And its a lot cheaper to run - next house will have one for sure

How did he manage to start a fire with a kettle?
Fluffybutter · 27/10/2020 17:37

When I last looked they were a grand once you added in the filter .
I think I’ll stick to the kettle !

leiaskye · 27/10/2020 17:39

We got one with the house, not sure I’d have bought it otherwise.

But I love it!

Lived in the house for a little over 5 years, it’s used several times a day & never broken.

TenaciousP · 27/10/2020 17:40

We have a Quooker tap. We got it when we had our new kitchen installed in January this year. It's wonderful. Instant boiling water and no kettle taking up space on the worktops or hob (I hate clutter). It was a lot of money to pay for a tap and a lot of friends were Shock at the price, but I think it was definitely worth it. It has a safety feature, so I have no concerns re my daughter accidentally running the boiling water and burning herself.

BadDucks · 27/10/2020 17:41

SIL has one and says it’s her biggest disappointment in her new kitchen. Tea and coffee doesn’t feel quite hot enough so she has a kettle anyway.

I have to say my extravagance was a water softener system and it’s bloody epic!

wigglerose · 27/10/2020 17:41

We've got them at work. The heater unit seems to take up an entire cupboard, although maybe family sized ones have smaller heater units compared to ones for an office of 30+ people (pre-covid). Can you spare a cupboard?

doodleygirl · 27/10/2020 17:42

We have one, it was on DH wish list. It’s great but I still miss a kettle Smile

1940s · 27/10/2020 17:45

Mine has never broken and it's the best thing ever!!!! Starting dinner is so much faster and makes a quick cup of tea tempting all the time!! I couldn't live without it I hate waiting for the kettle to boil in holiday accommodation for a big pot of pasta!

Sahara123 · 27/10/2020 17:46

Had one in a holiday flat once . I’m a tea drinker and I hated it, there was a strange scum on the surface of my tea, it tastes so much better from a boiled kettle. It did have a safety button but was still spluttering everywhere. I didn’t realise how expensive they are, complete waste of money for me.

RJnomore1 · 27/10/2020 17:49

I have a cheap one - under £300 from a company on eBay. It’s over a year old and apart from needing the reset button pressed once worked perfectly.

Takes water to 98/99 degrees perfect for coffee.

The tap is shared with the actual tap so one side has a safety valve for the unit under the sink and the other is your standard hot/cold swivel mixer.

The filter needs changed yearly for about £18 and filters on the way in so no limescale

It was an impulse buy when doing the kitchen and it’s one of the best purchases I’ve made. I’d highly recommend although I doubt I’d pay £1500 for one.

Parker231 · 27/10/2020 17:50

We’ve the 4 in 1 type. It’s brilliant and wouldn’t be without it now. When we had the kitchen redone i thought it would be an expensive toy (DH’s idea) but now it’s easily the best gadget

LeimarHELL · 27/10/2020 17:59

I would be too scared that visitors and children would scald their hands on it. It takes a few seconds to boil a kettle.

MaidenMotherCrone · 27/10/2020 18:02

Looks like the people that actually have them love them.

I love mine. It was less than £500. I don't get scummy or frothy tea as I change the filters every 6 months as recommended.
It does reach 100 degrees too.

No trouble with limescale as the water is filtered before its heated in the unit and the unit does not take up lots of space.

My first one lasted 5 years. Died and so I replaced the unit. Job done.

Mine has its own little sink in our beverage area 🤣 (translates as under the wall cupboard with the cups in and next to the wine cooler with the milk in).
