AIBU to blow the new kitchen budget on a boiling tap

As above, really. It's a huge chunk of my budget, but it would be a timesaver and also no need for a kettle on the counter.

Does anyone have one? Is it worth it?

Oh god I need one now.
Is the water painfully hot? I need my water painfully hot.
Is it expensive energy wise?

stackemhigh · 27/10/2020 18:03

We have them in the office and tea tastes horrible with it. Maybe more useful for cooking pasta and rice. I wouldn't bother.

Laiste · 27/10/2020 18:04

Thanks for this thread.

It's made me come to a decision.

An it's a no :)

JuliaJohnston · 27/10/2020 18:07

How much worktop space do you get back when you ditch the kettle?! 😂

Ratatcat · 27/10/2020 18:08

Like others our one at the work used to break down a lot. I loved it as the water was properly boiling so easy to make an instant tea but I wouldn’t like it around kids.

honeylulu · 27/10/2020 18:13

Ones at work were frequently breaking down. Parts had to be ordered and took weeks. One day it was repaired and broke down again later the same day. They look and function great when they work but never in a million years would I get one for home.

MarieInternette · 27/10/2020 18:14

We have one. Ours is an Insinkerator Tap which is much cheaper than a Quooker one. We have had to replace the boiler part once but we have had it for 11 years so all in all think it’s been a good buy. Wouldn’t be without one now.

stackemhigh · 27/10/2020 18:21

Wondering if the boiling water from these taps impairs the flavour of coffee? As you're meant to use water "off the boil" for ground coffee, for example. I want one of these taps but not sure about this aspect.

Don’t know about coffee but my workplace are religious about staff wellbeing and change filters regularly and the tea still tastes horrible. One of the plus sides of WFH is a decent cup of tea.

chillibeansauce · 27/10/2020 18:23

I have one and love it.

JenniferSantoro · 27/10/2020 18:32

We have a quooker one. I think it was about £800. Well worth it.

HeronLanyon · 27/10/2020 18:34

Good point about kettles being portable. How else would you pour boiling water on a weed I. A path or rinse a bin out or when the boiler breaks down manage a shallow bath with 15 kettles etc.
Not only do I think (quite possibly unreasonably) that a boiling tap isn’t hygienic I also can’t imagine not having a kettle.

DrDreReturns · 27/10/2020 18:40

We have them at work but I can't justify the expense at home. I'm happy to wait a minute or two for the kettle to boil.

BeigeFoodLover · 27/10/2020 18:44

Should also add.... as my last post we didn’t go with the tap, but didn’t want a kettle on counter so have a hob kettle on an induction hob so it boils super quickly. X

TalbotAMan · 27/10/2020 18:48

Absolutely worth it. We have a Franke Minerva - ours has been in about 9 years and not sure if that model is still made -- which produces proper boiling water which you need for tea. Some only produce nearly boiling water which is ok for coffee. The boiling water handle is spring loaded to off and you need to press a release catch before you can turn it, which should be some protection against accidents.

Can't remember the cost but DW is brilliant at finding internet outlets or ebay sellers who sell at a pretty good discount to retail.

FizzyGreenWater · 27/10/2020 18:48

I know four people with them

one has had to have it fixed twice

one doesn't use it for tea any more because of weird taste (and yes they change filters!)

the other two think it's ok

definitely a no from me

FourTeaFallOut · 27/10/2020 18:53

It strikes me as even more dangerous than an insinkerator - and Gremlins ruined that for me in childhood.

Speminalium · 27/10/2020 18:56

Ours died in a very expensive way because we forgot to change its filter. It would have been £400 to fix it. I never thought the water was hot enough for tea either. Finally, I always have a quick tidy while the kettle boils...

Brogues · 27/10/2020 18:57

We have one and I love it. You have to push the collar down twice then turn it so a different handle to the regular water so no accidental scalding. We don’t live in a hard water area so not envisaging any faults due to limescale or scum because we don’t really get those in a regular kettle anyway.

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 27/10/2020 19:01

We moved someone that had one that was broken. My husband fixed it and I would never be without it now. I think it might depend if you're in a hard water area or not as to how much it breaks.

ContadoraExplorer · 27/10/2020 19:36

Love ours, wouldn't want to live without one now.

schnubbins · 27/10/2020 19:36

I have a Quooker .We had installed two years ago when we had our kitchen remodelled.its the four way tap with distilled , normal, fizzy and boiling water function. The fizzy water is amazing and tastes so much better than anything out of a bottle .We all love fizzy water and it has replaced all other drinks other than alcoholic ones .The kids love it and add limes lemons and herbs such as peppermint and basil to their water .No more dragging bottles back and forth. No more sweet drinks in the house. The boiling water tap though did disappoint me.It is just not hot enough for black tea and does produce a scum.its perfect though for herbal teas and my peppermint tea which i love in the evening. The tap has broken down though twice and is at the moment only producing the fizzy water.i have bought a kettle again as a back up.

Luckingfovely · 27/10/2020 19:43

Had mine for four years and it works perfectly. Would never be without one now.

HappyPumpkin81 · 27/10/2020 19:54

I splashed out on a £5 kettle from Tesco because it lit up with a blue light instead of the non lighting up kettle for £3, it is still going strong 14 years later. I can't help thinking that these taps are a huge waste of money and a health and safety hazard!

claireb7rg · 27/10/2020 19:56

our boiling tap you have to press down and turn, no accidental scalding
