DH and the boiler

Besswess88 · 24/10/2020 17:16

Our boiler is broken. Three engineers have told us this.

We need a new boiler, it’s a PITA but not the end of the world and we can probably cobble together the money somehow (we are both lucky that we have secure jobs atm).

DH loves to make a saving and get a bargain so he has bought some parts off the internet and has tried several times to fix the boiler unsuccessfully.

DH is not a heating engineer, does not approach things delicately and can have a somewhat kamecazee attitude.

The boiler is now making a very unhealthy noise and it’s making me VERY nervous and I have asked DH to stop and to concede that we need a new boiler and that he is not going to be able to fix the fucking thing and could possibly endanger life while fucking about with it.

YANBU. Maybe you qualify for a warm front grant towards the cost of a new green boiler?

Ornamentalcabbages · 24/10/2020 17:20

JHC, that is beyond dangerous.

There's a reason you need a "Gas Safe" certificate to carry out boiler works!

Take this into your own hands and get quotes to organise a replacement unit ASAP.

Gillian1980 · 24/10/2020 17:20

Yanbu. He could literally be putting your lives a stake by tampering with it when he doesn’t know what he’s doing. Get a carbon monoxide detector ASAP and just get on and book a new one to be fitted if you can afford it.

FlitterMouse · 24/10/2020 17:20

Lets hope it doesnt blow up. It might stop working completely. Have you got heating and hot water. I would turn it off and get a gas engineer to make it safe. Can you look at boiler offers or a grant. Silly man.

Besswess88 · 24/10/2020 17:21

We won’t qualify for a grant but I just want him to leave the bloody thing alone.

TheRogueApostrophe · 24/10/2020 17:21

YA absolutely NBU. Unqualified people really shouldn't ticker with boilers. My dh is very handy with many things but he knows when to leave the experts to it. I'd be really angry.

FlitterMouse · 24/10/2020 17:21

Whats he actually done to it

ChocolateCherrybomb · 24/10/2020 17:21

Not only dangerous but isn't that illegal.

Aren't you supposed to be registered to mess with gas or electric installations these days.

Besswess88 · 24/10/2020 17:24

We have a CM detector thank god, but his continuing to ignore my request is pissing me off.

OP posts:
DefinitelyPossiblyMaybe · 24/10/2020 17:24

That is so dangerous!! For goodness sake please shut the thing off and get a heating engineer in. What a moron!

Aquamarine1029 · 24/10/2020 17:24

I would be raging if I were you. My husband is absolutely brilliant at fixing anything, plumbing, electrical things, cars, you name it, but he would never fool around with a boiler. Your husband is an idiot.

pickingdaisies · 24/10/2020 17:24

Bloody hell, tell him you don't want the bloody thing exploding! If he isn't listening, you might just have to get one of those plumbers to recommend one, and get it ordered yourself.

rosie1959 · 24/10/2020 17:25

He is absolutely ridiculous and dangerous

Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor · 24/10/2020 17:25

Just sort the new boiler yourself assuming you have access to the joint funds to do so.
He's being ridiculous.

Notcontent · 24/10/2020 17:25

As someone else mentioned, I am pretty sure it’s illegal to work on a gas boiler if you are not qualified. The consequences could be either carbon monoxide poisoning or an explosion.

pigsDOfly · 24/10/2020 17:26

Bloody hell that sounds dangerous.

I'm not sure I'd want to stay in the same house as a boiler that someone, who has no idea what he's doing, has mucked about with.

Find a decent boiler engineer and book for him/her to come and give you a quote for a new one.

FlitterMouse · 24/10/2020 17:26

It there is an accident he may well invalidate the insurance

TopBitchoftheWitches · 24/10/2020 17:27

Just fucking tell him to leave the boiler alone. So bloody dangerous. What a prick.

MJMG2015 · 24/10/2020 17:27

Qualifying fir a grant isn't about income. It's a 'green' incentive, so you should check it out.

DH us is a fucking idiot. There's not much to a boiler, but if a couple of technicians have told you it's not fixable, there's a bloody good chance it's not fixable. They generally like the money from fixing them! Unless they're actively trying to sell you a new one.

Do you have a carbon monoxide alarm? If not, go and get one now (supermarket/petrol station)

Aveva look online tomorrow & decide what to buy. Get it organised.

Bargebill19 · 24/10/2020 17:28

Tell him, that by fiddling with it, without relevant qualifications and having had it effectively condemned by several competent and qualified engineers, IF something goes bang he could very well have invalidated your home and contents insurance.
A new boiler is a lot cheaper than having to replace a home without insurance to pay.

Yanbu!

MJMG2015 · 24/10/2020 17:30

Actually I'd probably just forget the alarm & go and turn it off at the wall. Better to be completely safe, you don't know what the idiot has done to it & you don't want to risk it exploding.

Cupcakey · 24/10/2020 17:31

Please get a qualified engineer out ASAP to check it's safe. My Dh is a breakdown engineer and he said it could be immediately dangerous. Any work on the boiler should be tested for gas leaks and follow strict procedures. I'm sorry but your husband is a dickhead! Please get someone out ASAP! It's really not worth the risk.

Besswess88 · 24/10/2020 17:31

I have insisted now and he’s turned it off in a huge sulk Angry

OP posts:
TopBitchoftheWitches · 24/10/2020 17:39

Oh well op, I'm sure he will grow up soon.

2bazookas · 24/10/2020 17:40

If its a gas boiler he has broken the law by tinkering with gas while not qualified/licensed.

Call some reputable company and get them to install a new one.
