DH and the boiler

Besswess88 · 24/10/2020 17:16

Our boiler is broken. Three engineers have told us this.

We need a new boiler, it’s a PITA but not the end of the world and we can probably cobble together the money somehow (we are both lucky that we have secure jobs atm).

DH loves to make a saving and get a bargain so he has bought some parts off the internet and has tried several times to fix the boiler unsuccessfully.

DH is not a heating engineer, does not approach things delicately and can have a somewhat kamecazee attitude.

The boiler is now making a very unhealthy noise and it’s making me VERY nervous and I have asked DH to stop and to concede that we need a new boiler and that he is not going to be able to fix the fucking thing and could possibly endanger life while fucking about with it.

AIBU?

Good work Bess, let him sulk. By far the safest option.

soundsfishie · 24/10/2020 17:42

@FlitterMouse

It there is an accident he may well invalidate the insurance

If there is a gas accident it's unlikely OP nor the idiot would be around to claim on the insurance anyway.

What an absolute tool he is.

pilates · 24/10/2020 17:42

Get the engineers to price for a new boiler. Then get it booked in before the cold weather starts. Your DH is an idiot.

MyOwnSummer · 24/10/2020 17:43

Illegal and extremely dangerous, the man is a complete moron.

Glad he has switched it off now.

Get the new one ordered quick!

Besswess88 · 24/10/2020 17:48

We have already had a quote .... he just didn’t like it ..

dottiedodah · 24/10/2020 17:49

I would contact a Boiler Company pronto! Maybe he would like to have a gas explosion to save a few bob? If the Guy comes out he will have to listen to him wont he? Alternatively call Gas Safe and explain to them !

DetectiveRandySomething · 24/10/2020 17:52

You don't fuck with gas.

Tell him to stop being a twat or you'll move out.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 24/10/2020 17:55

JFDI.

He is behaving like a complete idiot.
You need a new boiler, according to 3 qualified engineers. Whether he likes it or not, or whatever his mood, that’s the facts, so you might as well get in with it ASAP.

FloydWasACat · 24/10/2020 17:57

Does your DH not realise that heating engineers are fully and repeatedly trained for the fun of it??? What a knob! I am fuming for you.

FloydWasACat · 24/10/2020 18:09

DH is a heating engineer and I don't even want to tell him about what your DH has done, he wouldn't stop going on about it all night if I did!

Bridget1979 · 24/10/2020 18:16

Firstly good work stopping your husband stopping working on the boiler. He shouldn’t have even contemplated repairing it if he’s not gas safe registered.

How old is your boiler? If it’s under 10 years then contact the manufacturer as they usually offer a fixed price repair which is usually cheaper if you know it needs a number of parts; it’s usually around 295 inc vat.

The new green homes grant doesn’t cover natural gas boilers, only biomass.

We dealt with the ECO scheme previously (energy company Obligation). We stopped doing it as the funding was very stop start and it wasn’t a reliable revenue for our business and the funding would be stopped and we would be left with pissed off customers.

The main 6 energy providers would be the ones to try if this scheme is still running. Keep in mind funding takes time though; you can’t just call up and answer a few questions and have an install in a day or so.

As loathed as I am to recommend Boxt, They are 48 or 49% owned by Worcester Bosch so they benefit from discounts on Worcester boilers and are ridiculously low priced. You don’t benefit
Form the longer warranty you would get if you use a Worcester accredited engineer but their
Website is quite slick. Just make sure their engineers fully flush your system if you go
With them as I have seen some shoddy installs as they use a matrix of subcontractors and some
Of them are just In it for the cash.

Loads of companies offer finance on boilers now so try that if you can’t afford it In full.

Hope you get it sorted as it’s turning a bit nippy! (I’m not a gas engineer; I part own a plumbing and gas safe company).

Nanny0gg · 24/10/2020 18:22

Tell him that if it should blow up or cause any damage your insurance will be invalidated.
Whether or not he could be prosecuted I don't know.

He's a fool.

marveloustimeruiningeverything · 24/10/2020 18:23

He's being a twat. The cost comes with home ownership. Tell him to grow the fuck up.

Bridget1979 · 24/10/2020 18:25

Oh and if you do get a new boiler, make sure you get it serviced annually to maintain the warranty. Don’t let your husband do it!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/10/2020 18:26

Aside from what everybody else has wisely said, it would make your house (if it doesn't blow up) legally unsellable at any time in the future. If you ever wanted to move (or even if it's your 'forever' home, if your children were to try to sell it after you've gone), you would be unable to do so until a qualified person had fully checked, decommissioned and replaced the boiler - and possibly also other expensive connected fittings. Aside from the already considerable costs, they might also want danger money and they are probably legally bound to report the previous illegal work; or, if you're 'lucky' they may be willing to compromise their integrity and risk their professional position in exchange for a sizeable amount of extra money.

I love a bargain as much as anybody, but there's a time and a place - this is the equivalent of running your car on completely bald tyres and with worn out brake cables that you know are hanging by a thread and just hoping for the best.

Classicbrunette · 24/10/2020 18:27

Definitely get an engineer in. A house blew up near me due to the boiler.

Says it all.
He’s an idiot. If he’s not happy with the one quote you’ve had, he can get some more. But if I were you I’d just crack on.

DH and the boiler
Coldwinterahead1 · 24/10/2020 18:33

Christ that's beyond reckless, carbon monoxide kills people.

Bagelsandbrie · 24/10/2020 18:34

So dangerous!! Wow. Ring the emergency gas line and have them come and check he hasn’t caused a gas leak.

Coldwinterahead1 · 24/10/2020 18:37

Just to be on the safe side op, turn the meter off outside your property.

LIZS · 24/10/2020 18:37

If previous engineer condemned and shut off boiler it is illegal to turn it back on if unqualified, as well as dangerous.

ChaChaCha2012 · 24/10/2020 18:38

Please call National Grid and tell them what has happened. They can decide if they need to call out to make it safe.

My partner attends these incidents, including the ones where it's too late.

ChaChaCha2012 · 24/10/2020 18:42

Isolating the gas is not turning off the meter! It can be done by residents, but should not be done without an expert telling you what to do. That's what the emergency line is there for, to decide the best action (if any) that needs to be taken.

DodgeRainClouds · 24/10/2020 18:53

A boiler in my st exploded recently. No way would I be happy with my husband ‘fixing’ ours
