DH and the boiler

Besswess88 · 24/10/2020 17:16

Our boiler is broken. Three engineers have told us this.

We need a new boiler, it’s a PITA but not the end of the world and we can probably cobble together the money somehow (we are both lucky that we have secure jobs atm).

DH loves to make a saving and get a bargain so he has bought some parts off the internet and has tried several times to fix the boiler unsuccessfully.

DH is not a heating engineer, does not approach things delicately and can have a somewhat kamecazee attitude.

The boiler is now making a very unhealthy noise and it’s making me VERY nervous and I have asked DH to stop and to concede that we need a new boiler and that he is not going to be able to fix the fucking thing and could possibly endanger life while fucking about with it.

AFAIK it's not illegal to do gas work if you are not gas safe registered, it's just you can't sign it off / charge someone to do the work.

Fair enough, I wonder if that has changed recently. I know of someone who did it and he's not the type to break the law. It used to be something like you could do gas work if competent but couldn't "be employed" / charge for it unless gas safe.

See, for example

Probably we should agree that the OP DH is not "competent", but who knows, he might be a misunderstood genius.

My husband is a heating engineer, and as far as I know if your husband is not gas safe registered he is breaking the law by touching inside the casing!

soundsfishie · 25/10/2020 08:36

Isolating the gas is not turning off the meter!

It is at my house. The shut off valve is located inside the meter box, which is on my external wall. Is that not normal?

Nanny0gg · 25/10/2020 08:38

Is everyone on here praying that the OP isn't their neighbour?
Confused

Something's in life you just don't mess with and a boiler is one of them.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/10/2020 09:18

Can you afford to fix it?

Rotundandhappy · 25/10/2020 09:22

@Besswess88 did you survive the night? Bit concerned. Glad to see you have a CO2 detector, though.

Hopoindown31 · 25/10/2020 09:40

Christ, you DH is a fucking idiot. You don't diy gas appliances, you can and will kill people.

Get an engineer and pay for a new boiler.
