Ahh so your children are nearly 2 and 3. Anybody else find it really bizarre to refer to older children in months (or AIBU?!)

Months is okay up until 18 months. After that they’re nearly two, just turned two, two and a half, nearly three... and once they’re over five I think you can dispense with halves too.

BlackeyedSusan · 25/10/2020 17:41

months up to two seem ok, then its just turned two, two, two and a half, nearly three etc.

then later it is just turned six, six, nearly seven.

pollymere · 25/10/2020 17:45

I think it's ok up to 18 months due to the number of milestones. I wouldn't use it beyond then ("nearly two, two and a bit etc instead)

user1472151176 · 25/10/2020 17:49

Yup. In months up to 12 months, then it's by years.

Callingallskeletons · 25/10/2020 18:24

I genuinely haven’t got a bloody clue how old DC are in months 😂🤦🏻‍♀️
I think we kept that up until DD was 18m and then it became “she’ll be 2 in June”

Carouselfish · 25/10/2020 18:33

Especially as I'm so bad at maths t takes me a moment to figure out!

bemusedmoose · 25/10/2020 19:23

up to 18 months fine ( i find 18 months easier to say than 1 and a half) after that it's years and bits or nearly the next age surely!?

winniestone37 · 25/10/2020 19:51

Erm yeah it’s weird but not weird enough to warrant coming to mumsnet to complain about it Hmm

user1497787065 · 25/10/2020 19:54

The one that always amuses is me is 'She is three, going on four'.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 25/10/2020 21:29

I say ds is one and bit when people ask. I'm too lazy to work out the months, the only time I do is when it's developmental

RoomontheDressingGownofBroom · 25/10/2020 21:39

@thetangleteaser

When people do this, I make a really long drawn out effort to work out actually how old they are, out loud, counting on my fingers like a child.. just so they realise how ridiculous they are and how totally stupid it is to refer to their child as 27 months old!

Do you also do a tinkly laugh and a head tilt?

IEat · 25/10/2020 22:10

Anything over 18 months

Plussizejumpsuit · 25/10/2020 22:15

In my head I was totting up how old 37 months was. Yes really odd.

Plussizejumpsuit · 25/10/2020 22:19

But we have words for the 13 month and 23 month old child. Just turned one and nearly two. Or even 1 and 1 month and 1 and 11 months. For those in between saying 2 and a half or even two and three quarters or something sound much more normal.

IAintentDead · 25/10/2020 22:31

When there is only a few months between them it kinda make sense. 15 months between mine so to say 6 month and 1 year old sounds a bit odd. But, once the elder was 2 I did just refer to years. I can see why, if they are very close some don't until a bit older.

jambeforeclottedcream · 25/10/2020 22:37

I think it's ok until the dc is about 2. But it's ok to do quarter or half ages up until the age of 4 or 5

Minxmumma · 26/10/2020 05:46

To be honest I think I am to lazy to bother counting in months once they get past a year and a half. My tot is 4 next month, so if anyone asks she is nearly 4 not 47 months.

Although given my eldest childs current level of maturity she probably should be referred to as 286 months Hmm

YenneferOfBattenberg · 26/10/2020 05:59

Months are soooo pedestrian. I use weeks. I have two children - 91 and 227 weeks old. Both thriving.

maddiemookins16mum · 26/10/2020 06:02

I stopped the ‘months’ when she hit 18.

maddiemookins16mum · 26/10/2020 06:02

18 months that is 🤗

Pumpertrumper · 26/10/2020 06:06

I think it’s fine to use months until they reach their 2nd birthday. There’s a huge development difference between a 12 month and 20 month old. Quite often it’s other mums asking how old the child is to determine if they’re at a similar stage to their own child.

After 2 though I think it becomes annoying and twee!

ACanOfBeans · 26/10/2020 06:14

A good job I read the post, I very nearly selected ‘YABU’ just because of title 🤣

ACanOfBeans · 26/10/2020 06:21

For the most part I stop using months at 1.5. But do use until 21 ish months dependent on situation, I hit 22 months and I feel silly in every situation so it’s just ‘almost 2’ or ‘2 in X’.

Mammyloveswine · 26/10/2020 06:53

I just say "he's 2, 2.5" or now I say "he'll turn 3 in January"..

My 2 year old despite being close to 3 is still very small and toddler like whereas his brother was much bigger and looked much older!

I found giving ages like this was good for context if there's been an altercation at softplay for example! (Is often have 5/6 year olds complain about eldest when he was only 2 as they assumed he was closer to 4-the little one is often referred to as a baby and mothered by the older kids...it's very interesting!)

Tattygran14 · 26/10/2020 07:42

If I say I'm 904 months old, does that make me sound young.... mm, thought not.
