Ahh so your children are nearly 2 and 3. Anybody else find it really bizarre to refer to older children in months (or AIBU?!)

Personally I think it makes sense up to about 2years/24months but I don't thin it's a big deal.

A pre-schooler definitionally is pre-school age btw, not just 3 year olds.

Icantrememebrtheartist · 24/10/2020 10:36

Wow! Just realised mums have found something new to judge and criticise each other about!

Butchyrestingface · 24/10/2020 10:36

How very dare you. I am a proud 504 months old.

Rubyroost · 24/10/2020 10:36

At 2 years and 9 months, I still say it in years and months. I'm imagining this will change when he's about 4. It seems weird to just say 2 as at 2 he could say very little and now he's yapping all day!

NewAndImprovedNorks · 24/10/2020 10:41

I am 20,649 days old.
That is a LOT of days

TeamLucille · 24/10/2020 10:42

I assure you it's not new at all

It's annoying and a bit arrogant: you must know that people are only polite when they listen to you talking about your child, they don't really care, and they care even less to calculate the age of precious over there.

I do judge a bit that you have to keep an exact record in months of the age of your child Grin, I always imagine one of these parents who must have a photoshoot displaying the age "my little darling just turned 34 months today" . Fine if it's private, the rest of the world really doesn't care.

If I tell you what my kids are having for breakfast today, you wouldn't care either. I don't expect you to!

Mumofsend · 24/10/2020 10:43

My kids have development issues so I know roughly their age in months as at 4 and 5 it's still relevant. Otherwise they are just 4 and 5.

Mines nearly 3 (34 months Grin). I think when theyre little, a year can encompass a lot of change - there's a big difference between "just 2" and "nearly 3". So I tend to go for "just", "nearly" and "a half". Mostly because I can't be bothered to work out the maths.

It does remind me of being a teen though, where the extra half was really important. Because being 13.5 was SO much older than just being 13. (Although maybe that was just me....)

Meepmeeep · 24/10/2020 10:47

It does sound ridiculous but on here I’ve seen people just state their child is 2 and then being jumped on because the person responding needs to know their exact age - in days and hours. Some people probably do it for that reason. So yeah, I can understand why.

NaughtipussMaximus · 24/10/2020 10:48

I think up to 18/24 months it’s fine, because there’s a big difference between a baby who’s just turned one and one that’s 6 months older. But older than that and I’d just say, nearly 3, just turned 5, 6 and a half or whatever.

soffiee · 24/10/2020 10:52

I got annoyed with DH when he said ds was 1.5 years old when someone asked on holiday when ds was actually just 14 months. So much changed developmentally wise between 14-18 months but I think the cut off line should be 2. You could say dd is going to turn 3 in January other than using months.

PurpleFlower1983 · 24/10/2020 10:53

YADNBU just because I’m not good enough at maths to work out ages! Anything beyond 2 and I’m Confused

BaylisAndHardon · 24/10/2020 11:00

Grin Loving some of these responses. Glad it's not just me!

I can't even remember how many months they are once they've turned 1. It's too much to keep track of. Going year by year is much simpler.

Italianmoma1983 · 24/10/2020 11:20

I am 503 months old if anyone is interested ! 😌

LindaEllen · 24/10/2020 11:21

My auntie insisted on referring to her son in months for actually quite a ridiculous amount of time - including '24 months', which is LITERALLY 2.

TeamLucille · 24/10/2020 11:26

I got annoyed with DH when he said ds was 1.5 years old when someone asked on holiday when ds was actually just 14 months.

Seriously? Confused WHY? Serious question, I don't get it.

Are you that bothered about showing off your child to complete strangers (who REALLY don't care) that you are offended someone might think your child is a little behind because they think he's 3 or 4 months older than he is? Who the hell care?

Fair enough if it's about safety, drinking (later...) inappropriate relationships but then it's years that make a difference then, not a couple of months.

majesticallyawkward · 24/10/2020 11:42

Totally cringe past a year. No one really cares, if someone says to me their kid is 37 months I'll maybe think ' so 3' and then immediately forget 🤷🏼‍♀️

I have one friend who refers to her dc in months and weeks- I think last update the dc was 16 months 3 weeks and 4 days or something. No one had asked, it was an innocuous 'oh and how's the little one?'

Icantrememebrtheartist · 24/10/2020 12:13

Just as an after thought, you should be kind and don’t correct mums if they still do this, there could be a reason for it. I have one friend who has one child and it took her 16 years of fertility treatment to get her DC and she is really struggling to accept she will never get the chance to have another baby and still refers to her toddler in months. I know another mum who thought she would have 2 or 3 but hasn’t been able to conceive again. Just saying. You never know if there’s more to it.

Kokeshi123 · 24/10/2020 12:28

I think after about 2-and-a-half, using "XY months" gets a bit cringe.

UsernameSpoosername · 24/10/2020 12:32

Below 2, months is fine. Because the development is so quick. There’s a big difference between a 12 month old & a 23 month old but they’re both still ‘1.’

Above 2 isn't necessary really, just turned 2, 2 & 1/2, almost 3... then it’s just 3,4,5 etc...

Yeahnahmum · 24/10/2020 13:23

Months until 18 months. Then freaking act normal Wink
Anything else (like saying your kid is 27 months) is just hystericalGrin

Floralnomad · 24/10/2020 13:26

Totally agree that months is acceptable to 18 months and then you move onto years / years and months .

RedMarauder · 24/10/2020 13:31

@Yeahnahmum if you were talking to the parent about potty training, speech issues or sleep problems then the exact age would be useful.

However if you just bumped into them in the playground and your children started playing together you just need to know they are younger or older than yours so the months would be irrelevant.
