To think that Mark Drakeford is a power mad dictator?

Half the shops covered in plastic. Can’t buy clothes, duvets, books, DVDs, tins but not tin openers.
All the Halloween and bonfire night stuff that’s just been stocked is behind a cordon. Presumably now destined for landfill.

Autumn half term after a shitty year and I can’t even do a few seasonal treats for the kids.

AIBU to think that Mark Drakeford is a power mad dictator, and that his ridiculous game of Covid oneupmanship with Nicola and Boris needs to stop!?

@noideaatallreally

I don't know if some posters have missed this very important part of the lockdown rules - it is for two weeks plus one extra weekend - 16 days to go. In 16 days time the rules on non essential items will be lifted. We can all go out any kettles and lightbulbs and pens then. Or we can buy them online. Or if anyone is concerned about local non essential shops losing out we can wait. For 16 days.

Instead of getting more and more het up about an increasingly bizarre and catastrophic series of events that might evolve because we cannot CURRENTLY buy said tin openers, kettles and pens we could just give this a try?

And I do think calling a democratically elected leader a dictator is ridiculous. I am sure that people who live with/ have lived through dictatorships would have far better explanations than me though.

^^This. Grin

But I suppose that would be much less entertaining.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/10/2020 11:13

Incidentally, our tin opener broke in May. It was 10years old. At no point in the previous 10years had we needed a back up tin opener.

Luckily I got one with my Asda shop the next day. And also luckily, we hadn't been relying on that particular tin of food.

AllPlayedOut · 24/10/2020 11:14

Ok, you may have been talking about other essentials, but from the way you worded your post it sounded like you were talking specifically about fake blood, and it was funny.

I'm glad that you're so easily amused.

Burnout101 · 24/10/2020 11:14
@Burnout101 Because what you’re claiming doesn’t exist. I know that because I’m on a lot of those groups what with living in that area myself
There's people offering cream tea packages and pumpkins delivered to your home right at the top of those pages for starters, probably not for delivery today because you've left it late but I'm not trawling through for all your shopping needs just to prove that it exists.

AcornAutumn · 24/10/2020 11:14

A travel hairdryer?!

Has it not occurred to that poster that some people - gasp - don’t travel?

I don’t throw away gloves but one day they’ll need replacing.

Elphame Do you mind if I ask what kind of ship you have?

Also confused seeing that Wilko and Poundland are open.

AllPlayedOut · 24/10/2020 11:15

Lucky you. I've gone through quite a few of the buggers.

headstrong27 · 24/10/2020 11:15

Mark Drakeford, has said.Drakeford said it will be “made clear” to supermarkets they are only able to sell products that are classed as “essential goods”.
He said this would ensure a “level playing field” as many retailers will be forced to shut when the lockdown begins at 6pm on Friday and ends at midnight on 9 November.

What part of this don't you understand @Burnout101?

justchecking1 · 24/10/2020 11:16

I don't understand the rage here.

The bottom line is we're not supposed to leave the house unless for essential reasons. If something is available on line then it's not essential to leave your house to get it, is it?

You can still have all the frivolous shit your heart desires, you just can't go out to buy it!

I'm not sure what the issue is?

PickAChew · 24/10/2020 11:17

@TroysMammy

People won't adhere to a lockdown especially during half term. When the weather is shitty which it is, people go shopping, they won't stay at home which defeats the object.

If your kettle breaks down, boil some water in a saucepan on the stove. If your tin opener breaks, buy tins with ring pulls or not buy tins.

The likelihood of items breaking within the next 17 days for everyone is pretty low.

Halloween is definitely not essential and considering merchandise has been on sale in shops for weeks, people should plan better.

Replacing old fashioned tins with ring pull tins would necessitate another trip to the shops which, surely, defeats the whole bloody object. If you're going to need to go out fir some more tins then you might as well be able to buy something to open the ones you already have.
flowerbombVR · 24/10/2020 11:17

Surely the local newsagent type shops are open ? I mean using these types of shops for essentials such as bread and milk thereby keeping them afloat.

CounsellorTroi · 24/10/2020 11:17

All the Halloween and bonfire night stuff that’s just been stocked is behind a cordon. Presumably now destined for landfill.

Surely it would have ultimately ended up in landfill anyway

cologne4711 · 24/10/2020 11:18

@TroysMammy

Who are these people who throw out gloves after winter then buy another pair when the weather gets colder? The people with just one set of bedding? No cheap back up tin opener just in case their normal one breaks at any other time of the year? A cheap/travel hairdryer in case their normal one packs in when drying their hair?
I am not sure I do actually have a spare tin opener. And who has two hair dryers unless they have teenage daughters? I do have a travel iron.
AllPlayedOut · 24/10/2020 11:19

Why do people keep banging on about 16 days as though anything is defensible if it's for a particular length of time? There are plenty of things that I'd find utterly intolerable and unacceptable for two minutes let alone 16 days. Next they'll be literally locking everyone into their home and people will still be squawking "It's for 16 days!"

Yes, because the retail shops have to close to stop spreading covid so the supermarkets can't keep those aisles open spreading covid because that would be ridiculous!! They can keep the milk aisle open even if it spreads a bit of covid because people need to eat, do you want him to come and sit beside you on the sofa and talk you through it gently or something??
headstrong27 · 24/10/2020 11:20

Responding to another question the First Minister added that people will not have to check what items are not available because supermarkets will close the parts that sell non essential goods
"The way people will find out is that those parts of supermarkets will not be open for trading," he said.
"Individuals do not need to go searching for the information because it will be immediately apparent to them when they make a visit."

So basically go to the supermarkets to check what you can & can't buy? 👌🏼

Because if you're already in the supermarket buying food it is no more dangerous to also buy a kettle or a duvet or whatever else, is it??

RoxytheRexy · 24/10/2020 11:23

@Burnout101Well a pumpkin and cream tea isn’t a great substitute for birthday cards and some drawing paper but thanks for the tipSmile

headstrong27 · 24/10/2020 11:23

@Burnout101 thank you for confirming that you don't understand.

so the supermarkets can't keep those aisles open spreading covid because that would be ridiculous!!

cologne4711 · 24/10/2020 11:23

Apparently the definition of caring is fuck old people, the vulnerable and those susceptible to long covid so long as I can have a shiny new kettle on demand

What evidence is there that stopping people replacing a broken kettle in the next 17 days will prevent old and vulnerable people dying, and others suffering from long covid?

Oh yes that's right. There isn't any.

AllPlayedOut · 24/10/2020 11:23

I'm not sure what the issue is?

The so called justification is that it's unfair to the small shops, not that preventing people from buying items in the store they're already in will help to minimise the virus.

It isn't just so called frivolous shit that is the issue. Clothing, bedding and other household items can be pretty essential like bloody lightbulbs.

And again not everyone can buy online. And the point is supposedly to help small shops. How does those who can shop online spending their money on Amazon and Argos help them?

cologne4711 · 24/10/2020 11:24

They've already said that with regards to students. It's on 14 days isolation - it's fine for them to be locked up in their tiny rooms.
RaspberryCoulis · 24/10/2020 11:25

Yeah, that's what Nicola Sturgeon told us when she shut all the pubs and restaurants in Scotland on 9th October. Just 16 days. A short, sharp circuit break. Finishes 25ht October. But wait! We're actually just going to extend that by another week until our new tier system comes in on 2nd November. Another week won't matter will it? And you're just going to have to wait a wee bit longer before we tell you which tier you're in, and if you're in a higher tier you'll be staying closed anyway.

But it's just 16 days. Hmm

Burnout101 · 24/10/2020 11:25

@TrustTheGeneGenie

Yes, because the retail shops have to close to stop spreading covid so the supermarkets can't keep those aisles open spreading covid because that would be ridiculous!!

That's not why they've closed the aisles though is it!

So a bookshop has to close to stop spreading covid but then all the people that would have gone there for books should be able go congregate in Tesco's book aisle and magically not spread covid there?
cologne4711 · 24/10/2020 11:26

The bottom line is we're not supposed to leave the house unless for essential reasons. If something is available on line then it's not essential to leave your house to get it, is it

Well if you take that argument nobody should be going out at all as everyone can do food shopping online. Except that we know that's not possible because there aren't enough delivery slots, or even click and collect slots.

So if I have to go out to do my food and cleaning/loo roll shopping, I might as well buy any pens/tin openers/light bulbs/birthday cards I need at the same time. There is zero justification for the rule.
