To think that Mark Drakeford is a power mad dictator?

Half the shops covered in plastic. Can’t buy clothes, duvets, books, DVDs, tins but not tin openers.
All the Halloween and bonfire night stuff that’s just been stocked is behind a cordon. Presumably now destined for landfill.

Autumn half term after a shitty year and I can’t even do a few seasonal treats for the kids.

AIBU to think that Mark Drakeford is a power mad dictator, and that his ridiculous game of Covid oneupmanship with Nicola and Boris needs to stop!?

@MissEWeatherwax

It’s ridiculous. My DD’s have to buy their our files, pens etc for sixth form. Do you take your lightbulb from room to room if one breaks. Boil water on the hob if your kettle breaks. And books, they might as well just roll over to amazon now, bye bye high street.
You can buy lightbulbs. But don’t let facts get in the way.....
StatisticallyChallenged · 24/10/2020 10:27

Hope nobody has a baby that's the wrong size - happened to me both times. First one was too big and DH was dispatched to Asda for bigger stuff. Second one - bought bigger and she was smaller. Friend had a massive (over 12lb) baby and had to send partner for stuff.

What about stuff like sterilisers and bottles- in our supermarket they're normally with the sections that would be labeled non essential rather than with the formula. How many times on here have people said there's no need to buy bottles, steriliser etc if you plan to breastfeed as if needs be you can just get one from the supermarket?

I was homeless as a teen, then got my first flat. For quite a while I had microwave, kettle, toaster but no cooker. They were of course cheap ones so they did all break relatively quickly. If the kettle broke I couldn't boil water on the hob in a pan cos I didn't fucking have one.

There are plenty of families living on tight budgets who only have one of many, many essential but not essential in Wales items. Kids with one pair of shoes, no spare bedding. They're not going to increase the spread of covid by grabbing shoes for the kid who has just made a huge hole in their only pair.

BooksAreNotEssentialInWales · 24/10/2020 10:27

Just discovered when I tried to add a pumpkin to my click & collect they are non essential items. I can however get one delivered via Morrison’s @ amazon if I want to spend £££.

Orangeblossom7777 · 24/10/2020 10:27

Once again people saying things like shop online, out of touch with poorer people or elderly who might not be able to do this.

Easy for those who can work from home and have the means and are able to shop online, to comment.

Burnout101 · 24/10/2020 10:30

@headstrong27

People don't always buy stuff they desperately need now, or desperately need at all,

So you do think not buying non essentials will reduce the risk of the virus. Even though that's not why the policy was implemented. You're still winning!

So if non essential shops weren't closed to stop virus spread, and then corresponding non essential supermarket aisles closed to stop all those same shoppers simply crowding into the supermarket to buy the same stuff instead increasing virus spread, just why were they closed?
Bollss · 24/10/2020 10:30

@Burnout101

It's disgusting how people, especially someone who apparently looks after vulnerable service users, can accept this.

Boris's clan have been getting many of my vulnerable service users to switch to a benefit that insists on you having online skills even though you're in the most vulnerable groups of people and will penalise you by cutting off your food money AND rent if you don't or can't comply. I've had to accept far worse than no kettles for 2 weeks for ages, want to help me out with that first before I get concerned with what Asda aisles are open?

I don't agree with that either I think UC and the like are a shower of shit but that doesn't mean I accept these restrictions because "I've been through worse" you should be speaking up on the behalf of your vulnerable service users.
ktp100 · 24/10/2020 10:30

Yet more money for Jeff Bezos.

noideaatallreally · 24/10/2020 10:32

No, I don't agree with you. He is a democratically elected leader who I believe is trying to do his best in these unprecidented times. It is a very short, sharp break to our normal lives. It is just over two weeks. I think it will be better than the stop start approach we have seen so far. If this helps to give a little more protection the vulnerable in our communities and schools safer for all children and all staff then it is a very small price to pay. And no, of course there are no guarantees that it will be able to do that - but isn't it worth trying it? Just for 16 days?

It seems sensible to me. The less time we all spend in the company of people outside our own bubbles then less likely the virus is to spread - or at the very least it will slow the spread down.

I wish I lived in New Zealand right now, but I don't - but I do feel that the Welsh Government is making a better job of this than Westminster.

halcyondays · 24/10/2020 10:32

I’m sure A and E will be delighted if they have people coming in after scalding themselves with boiling water from a saucepan or cutting themselves trying to open a can without a tin opener.

WrongKindOfFace · 24/10/2020 10:33

@pussycatinboots

I could understand the principle of not encouraging people to linger in the supermarket browsing BUT the twat has made them cling film the Pick n mix! That is more essential than avocados and quinoa in half term, surely!!
Pix and Mix should be permanently clingfilmed. Germ filled cesspit at the best of times.

The rest of it is insane though.

Asterion · 24/10/2020 10:33

YANBU. He's made himself look like an utter tool, imo.

I do, thanks, but I don't see regular handwringing by these same posters that as well as the firebreak we have another fortnight of UC to add to the countless other fortnights. In fact, it's often the opposite, chats about 'these feckless scroungers sitting at home with their 57 inch flatscreens'. I spent last week making sure the vulnerable people I work with will still get everything they need during the firebreak, and will continue to - I can solve problems rather than just complain about them.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 24/10/2020 10:36

My DD’s have to buy their our files, pens etc for sixth form.

Do they live near a Wilko? Pretty sure Wilko is still open. Also Poundland.

Do you take your lightbulb from room to room if one breaks.

You can if you like Confused We've had over a week's notice to buy spare light bulbs etc.

Boil water on the hob if your kettle breaks

Or nip to Wilko. Or Home Bargains. Or order one online. In the event that you're one of the - what - 3? people in Wales unfortunate enough to break their kettle in the next 17 days.

And books, they might as well just roll over to amazon now, bye bye high street.

headstrong27 · 24/10/2020 10:36

@Burnout101 As Ive said many times on this thread but I've yet to get an answer beyond shop carefully (is there a manual for that?). Why does buying a kettle when you are also in the same shop buying milk spread the virus more?

Bollss · 24/10/2020 10:37

Because many people don't use UC so they wouldn't know. Fairly obvious. I'm glad you can solve problems but ranting on pretending it's not a problem is helping nobody.

Will Wilko be allowed to sell non essentials if supermarkets aren't??
noideaatallreally · 24/10/2020 10:39

The shop for essential items only will mean people spending LESS time indoors with people outside their bubble.

bibbitybobbitycatz · 24/10/2020 10:41

I had a quick dig and found that supermarkets were allowed to sell clothes during the big lockdown. Mind you, lots of people moaned about that too and thought it shouldn't be allowed!

Ok, simple terms. Some people will be in the supermarket only buying essentials. Some people will also buy non essentials with their weekly milk. Some people will go specially to have a look at the candles or dvds or whatever. That is how shops work. The third group won't bother going now, just as they can't go to Next or whatever's closed near them, so the numbers of people out mixing are reduced, is that clear? Just look at the number of people saying they can't pick up Halloween goodies now, they obviously didn't get them with their milk when the firebreak was due!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 24/10/2020 10:41

@halcyondays

I’m sure A and E will be delighted if they have people coming in after scalding themselves with boiling water from a saucepan or cutting themselves trying to open a can without a tin opener.
That won't happen, though, will it? I mean come on.

Anyway, I expect they'll have space because they won't be treating all the people pissed and injured after pub kicking out time. Or all the people who managed to tragically fatally wound themselves during a freak new-kettle-buying incident.Wink

littlbrowndog · 24/10/2020 10:41

Well no cos they will be nipping off to wilkos or home bargains to get the stuff they can’t get in Tesco

Noideawottodo · 24/10/2020 10:44

Just look at the number of people saying they can't pick up Halloween goodies now, they obviously didn't get them with their milk when the firebreak was due!

They were given no notice to do this.

And the Welsh govt has said this is for the sake of small business, not to limit viral spread, although people conveniently forget that, and just use it as an excuse to sneer at people who want to buy halloween stuff.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 24/10/2020 10:44

@TrustTheGeneGenie I believe so. I think they'll have to, as the vast majority of stuff in Wilko etc could be classed as non-essential.

littlbrowndog · 24/10/2020 10:44

And why have the state now decided what is essential

Drakeford didn’t say it was to stop the virus. He said it was to stop the wee shops being unable to open so the supermarkets couldn’t sell the stuff that the wee shops were which are now closed

Burnout101 · 24/10/2020 10:45

Because many people don't use UC so they wouldn't know. Fairly obvious. I'm glad you can solve problems but ranting on pretending it's not a problem is helping nobody.

Maybe people could find out about things beyond themselves? I don't need a new kettle or bedding in the next fortnight but here I am showing an interest in the issue.
