To offer to go to the bar and buy every teacher a drink?

Greetings, salutations and congratulations to every teacher who made it to half term with their health and sanity semi-intact.

AIBU to say that if I wasn't a poor single parent living on a 0.4fte salary I would go to the bar and offer to buy every single one of you a drink.

Well fucking done! Make sure you get at least a couple of days solid no school work rest.

Even if the bashers still think we're lazy, workshy, overpaid marxists we know the actual realities of what we've ploughed through this term!

Give yourself a huge pat on the back and a large drink/slice of cake/netflix binge/insert your unhealthy reward of choice!

You're amazing. Don't let the bastards get you down.

@ConorMasonsWife

My ex is a teacher and worked his ass off, as did 2 teacher friends, sadly from my daughters school all we got sent was links to bbc bite size and they closed down and told people to go to a school a mile away for key worker care. Luckily they're a rare case and I'm looking to move her school anyway!
I think this thread is about this last half term, not what happened during lockdown.
TheHoneyBadger · 23/10/2020 18:47

@SliceOfFriedGold

Whoever decided on an 8 week term needs shooting - especially after many of the children hadn't been to school for such a long time. They were absolutely shattered - and so was I. Barely hanging on by Week 6, when the behaviour started to go south. I felt like such a failure, but short of introducing a Y6 nap time there wasn't much I could do to mitigate it all!

Next round's mine - even the fancy cocktails Wine

ooh upping the stakes with cocktails!

I'll go for a long island iced tea - mostly because it always appears to be the one with the most alcohol in it on the menu.

See i do get it that non teachers can be like 8weeks? They wanna try doing a real job! etc but they just can't know what 8 weeks is in school time zone.

Anyone working in education deserves a very large drink!
My sons school have been bloody amazing!
I teach at a university and I'm very pleased it's reading week next week- it's been really hard work and I'm ready for a rest. Unfortunately I'm not off work but I'm definitely going to be taking it easy.
Happy half term!

year5teacher · 23/10/2020 18:48

Thank you! That’s my first half term as an NQT done. So proud of myself tbh.

TheHoneyBadger · 23/10/2020 18:50

However! I'd take the nightmare of 8 weeks in a school time zone over the eternity that is 11am to 12 in a clock watching dull as ditch water office.

I like to remind myself of the alternatives. For me personally that clock watching, slow dragging, how many years has it been since 9am time zone is worse than the get in a washing machine at 8.30am and get spat out at 3.30 trying to remember what day/year it is.

Enjoy reading week Sue

Dd managed to break her ankle beginning of Sept so has made life awkward at her school as she has to be accompanied in the lift, to the toilet and out of school. This is while avoiding other years and half the corridors and staff! School have happily done this with a smile, most days I think. Two days into pot off she was sent home to self isolate as three people and a teacher in her class had covid. School rang and explained everything beautifully. Rang two days later to say another pupil had it and asked after her welfare. By this time dd had tested positive. Then a third call a few days later to see how dd was doing. This teacher sounded fed up and completely harassed and told me all she wants to do is teach and instead shes having to fill out forms and chase infected pupils, possible infected pupils and try to cover staff who were dropping like flies ( 11 at last count). I really felt for her.

If I wasnt isolating for the 3rd week on ssp (cheers for passing it on last minute dd) I'd stand you all a round as well. Because you've bloody earnt itGinWine

Ps I also appreciated when dd checked her online work platform that there were 46 pieces of work to completeGrin

SueEllenMishke · 23/10/2020 18:52

Thanks op.
You've inspired me to go and make myself a very large gin! Cheers!

We had to have a Zoom meeting with DS's teacher about his behaviour a month or so ago. Blush Poor guy looked like he needed to sleep for a solid week.

TheOrchidKiller · 23/10/2020 18:54

Here here.
I would not/could not be a teacher or work in a school. DS's school worked really hard to provide online work during lockdown, & took proprtionate measures to keep as many kids as possible in school this half term. If it was allowed I would shake the headteacher's hand.

It's our last ever year of school life.

I hope that all schools get back to the old normal one day.

sickofnickelodeon · 23/10/2020 18:56

Thank you! An 8 wk covid term is just.... can i put my pjs on yet?

Gin to all... we all got through it!!

Wolfiefan · 23/10/2020 19:00

@sickofnickelodeon why haven’t you already??
I think I owe the teachers of my kids a bottle of spirits each. Not a drink!
Eldest in Y13. Staff worked so hard to try and keep the students on track in lockdown and hit this year running.
Y6? Complained there was no HW in the holiday. That’s how inspirational her teacher is.
I could never thank them enough.
Bloody lovely thread BTW!

coronafiona · 23/10/2020 19:02

Hear hear!

MrsHamlet · 23/10/2020 19:02

@year5teacher I gave my NQTs a little bottle of Prosecco today for achieving that. Well done you!!!

mineofuselessinformation · 23/10/2020 19:02

@TheHoneyBadger you're a woman after my own heart! I go for Long Island iced tea too.
And thank you for the thread - it's been a loooong half term for us staff as well as parents and students. Thanks

Northernparent68 · 23/10/2020 19:06

Some teachers did nothing during lockdown, so they clearly do n’t deserve a drink,

Wonderrwall · 23/10/2020 19:10

Teachers are flipping amazing! My children have LOVED being back at school; the interesting lessons, the banter with teachers, seeing their friends and getting out of the house. Their lives have improved so much over the past half term. I hope you all get a chance to rest and recharge this coming week ♥️♥️⭐⭐💐💐🍻🥂🍷🍸🍹🥃

FlouncerInDenial · 23/10/2020 19:12

@TheHoneyBadger
Lovely thread. Can I sneak in as a member of school staff but not a teacher? I'll just have a half bottle and get the next round.

Well done to all teachers (and the amazing children who've coped so well with all the changes)

Alternista · 23/10/2020 19:15

Yes. I’ve been critical of schools in the past, but I think you’ve all done brilliantly this half term. It’s made a massive difference to mine and my kids mental health. Thank you all.

I have a mate who was a bomb disposal expert in the Navy. He would regularly tell me that I had no idea what stress was compared to nearly running out of oxygen trying to diffuse a mine in the Arabian gulf. He would trot out every stereotype going about teaching.

After leaving service he became a teacher- he'd never done anything this hard. Despite having commanded a ship, seeing colleagues killed and spending several years running the training program he's just quit after 3 years (including ITT).

raddledoldmisanthropist · 23/10/2020 19:17

You should probably stop installing CCTV in people's houses, it's a bit creepy.

Thank you! Luckily my class have made it amazing. I’m so proud of all of them, they are so funny and lovely. I’m going to miss them this week!
