Would you be in favour of banning fireworks (other than scheduled displays?)

YABU - people should be allowed to let them off any time of the year in their own gardens etc...

YANBU - there is no need to let fireworks off at random times of the year and they should be kept to scheduled displays so people know when to expect them.

I really like fireworks

but YANBU

They are absolutely unnecessary and there are enough official nights when they can be used and watched. They cause too much negative for the pleasure of a few bang, and most private ones are not that great anyway.

TeamLucille · 23/10/2020 15:52

Picking someone else’s activity that sometimes is inconvenient to you to ban is hypocritical if you won’t ban stuff equally as harmful as that doesn’t bother you.

we manage to have rules against noise nuisance, so it's not that hypocritical at all.

It's easy to put them into the noise nuisance category and ban it that way if you think about it. Or fine the culprits heavily enough, that should put them off.

This is why I can’t stand them. There is something like this happening every year. 💔

GuyFawkesHadTheRightIdea · 23/10/2020 16:13

Where I live they're a frequent occurrence as they're used every night at midnight during a Muslim wedding. Which is most weeks. I'm no party pooper but I think in a densely populated area this is extremely disrespectful. Apologies if anyone is offended by that, but when you and your DC are regularly woken by a 100 shot set of rockets at midnight, it does start to grate and I think there should be at the very least a 9pm curfew on something like that.

Notonthestairs · 23/10/2020 16:14

Yes I'm in favour of banning them - in our local park kids throw them at dog walkers, joggers, cyclists and passing vehicles.
We report it but by the time the police arrive it's too late and they've moved on.
Of course they shouldn't have been sold to kids or passed on to kids in the first place - maybe that's where we need to crack down. The police have got enough to do.
It's a shame because I used to really love fireworks.

BlueJava · 23/10/2020 16:19

100% in favour of a ban - I was hit by a lit firework as a child (not long lasting or serious damage) but it was very frightening and they seem so unecessary.

kittykat35 · 23/10/2020 16:24

I'm in Ireland and they are already banned here so yes! 👍

Lasttraintolondon · 23/10/2020 16:35

Let's start with Chinese lanterns.

On a different note, your options are very one or the other. There's probably a more nuanced option available too.

2beautifulbabs · 23/10/2020 16:38

Yes I would they are a pain in the arse when you have numpties setting them off all over the new year bonfire Halloween Christmas etc you name it.

Steamfan · 23/10/2020 16:41

It's not just animals that are affected by them - ex service personnel with PTSD suffer as well, so while we have people remembering "our heros" they then go and cause stress by using fireworks. These are explosives! I'm involved in historical groups, and if I go to an organised event with replica firearms, that don't work and never have, I advise the police. If we want to use black powder in any other displays we have to advise the police, have a risk assesment and so on. Yet any brainless numpty can get hold of these and set them off at any time. The new and violent fad of Mischief night will be here soon, ideal for setting off fireworks and destroying property. For those on Facebook there is the FAB Firework campaign page - get on that. They have lots of links and info. Also a debate coming up soon in the Commons - write to your MP.

Halliehallie9828 · 23/10/2020 16:48

They don’t bother me.. but I don’t have any pets and I think they are pretty... they only go of for a short amount of time

TeaLibrary · 23/10/2020 16:48

I think fireworks should be confined to properly organised and policed displays where they are used safely and appropriately. I dont agree with sales to the general public because of the potential for antisocial behaviour and the noise/ smell and the potential for injuries. They are distressing to animals or the elderly living alone or anyone with sensory processing issues/ ptsd and its about time that we put a stop to fireworks being sold.

Everybody, we're only allowed to post things on MN now if we make sure they've never been discussed here before. Because @DynamoKev says so.

OP posts:
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 23/10/2020 16:51

What is your point DynamoKev?

Or are you just the fireworks threads marshal?

FlippidyFlop · 23/10/2020 16:53

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

What is your point DynamoKev?

Some of them posted were from years ago, one from 2008 😂😂

I guarantee nearly every post on MN has a similar one from yonks ago if you search for it.

Most people want to have a discussion now though rather than reading a dead one from 12 years ago.

Yes - a definite ban on fireworks in private gardens.

And garden bonfires.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 23/10/2020 16:58

Flippidy, I'm probably on every single one of them, TBH, and I'm not complaining about the repetitiveness of them.

twobrews · 23/10/2020 17:17

Yes we should ban everything that's unnecessary, potentially dangerous, potentially annoying for neighbours or bad for the environment.
Fireworks, trampolines, skiing, going to beaches, flying, pets, log burners, wrapping paper, alcohol, hot drinks, vapes, smoking, sex, driving to a theme park, theme parks, fast food, toys, scented candles, fabric softener, playing music at home without headphones, swimming for fun, hot tubs, barbecuing, cycling unless your going to work or school, parties at home...
Ban the lot.

RasberryRoyale · 23/10/2020 17:22

I hate fireworks. I wish they were banned. Sick of the selfish people letting them off day and night. Sick of the people who throw them at people and animals and the emergency services.

kateybeth79 · 23/10/2020 17:33

YANBU. I hate them! Too noisy and once you've seen one display, you've seen them all!

JanewaysBun · 23/10/2020 17:36

I love them but the fuckwits spoil it for everyone. If rather forego my joy than have yobs throwing them at people

Acerred · 23/10/2020 17:36

Right now I'd be in favour of not having scheduled displays as social distancing would be impossible. Outwith of these times I think it should be scheduled displays only.

stillsomewhatsheldonesque · 23/10/2020 17:43

Yes.

Ptsd is a bastard. Nothing quite like remembering mortars, tracer fire and bombs...

And the poor animals.

Firework Displays are fine - short and sweet and I can avoid it. fireworks being let off by neds/arseholes for weeks on end not so much.
