Would you be in favour of banning fireworks (other than scheduled displays?)

YABU - people should be allowed to let them off any time of the year in their own gardens etc...

YANBU - there is no need to let fireworks off at random times of the year and they should be kept to scheduled displays so people know when to expect them.

100%
No one needs explosives.

amusedbush · 23/10/2020 14:14

Some twat has been setting them off every night for a week here and my poor dog's a wreck. Nobody needs fireworks in their back garden.

We have been having the same problem. Really loud again last night and until late as well.

Should only be organised firework displays.
Bit mad that any old fuck wit can get their hands on them .

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 23/10/2020 14:17

I'm not sure but either way anyone using them should be considerate and let other households nearby that they will be using them so they can deal with any scared pets and children etc

DDiva · 23/10/2020 14:17

I love fireworks. I live in Sussex so can attend many organised events in sep/oct/nov in a 'normal' year. I also fully support private purchases.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 23/10/2020 14:18

Yes.

Apart from
The obviously reasons, such as noise pollution and animals suffering there are other things to consider.

Fireworks production is very environmentally damaging and they are also damaging for the environment when in use.

Add the that the needless injuries and the accidents and the fires associated with them and there is strong case for either a complete ban or restrictions such as public displays only.

As for Chinese Lanterns then only a full ban Will do, alongside with balloon release.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/10/2020 14:19

I think their use should be limited to certain dates, (NYE, 5th November, and the religious festivals like Diwali) and banned in very built up areas where there isn't space to let them off safely.

Rafflesway · 23/10/2020 14:19

Definitely!

Where do I sign? 😁

LeroyJenkinssss · 23/10/2020 14:19

It’s not my cat I’m worried about but my bloody sheep who are suicidal at the best of times but ridiculous if there’s fireworks nearby. Luckily bar one memorable incident everyone knows in our village not to let them off by on our side of the village as there’s a couple of dairy farms too.

Sunnydaysstillhere · 23/10/2020 14:19

My dh was burned as a dc by a firework being thrown in a garden bonfire. Luckily his hands were not too badly scarred...

CakeRequired · 23/10/2020 14:21

Should only be scheduled displays. Seen accidents happen at organised displays before, do you really think letting the idiots in this country have explosives is a good idea?

Sad for those that do have more than two brain cells to work with, but banning is the only way.

I agree. I appreciate some people enjoy them so wouldn't mind (as much anyway) scheduled displays on certain dates so people could prepare, especially when it comes to their animals.

I don't see any reason why anyone needs to let off fireworks on the 20th October though personally.

I think they should all be banned. There is nothing good about them at all. Neighbours and animals living near these displays don't have the choice to opt out - they impact everybody and everything around them. We worry about our pets but they have us or a safe space to comfort them. Wild animals and birds don't have any defense against the dreadful things at all. If they had to continue they should be made to be silent so they don't have such a negative impact on so many.

VestaTilley · 23/10/2020 14:22

I disagree, it can be nice to do a few in your own garden etc with older children if you can’t get to a big display and if it’s on Bonfire Night/not upsetting neighbours.

Not everyone uses them irresponsibly, and I don’t think we should all be punished because some people behave inappropriately with them.

Possibly, but i still think it should be limited to a particular date though, even if it is in your own garden.

Why do people need to set them off weeks before bonfire night or at other random points in the year?

WitchQueenofDarkness · 23/10/2020 14:26

Yes definitely.

It was OK when it was just the one night a year back in the day but now it's any old excuse

One woman on a local FB group announced that she was going to be letting some off last week to celebrate her child's first birthday and she didn't want any negative comments because she was telling us in advance.

So that's all right then Hmm

zigaziga · 23/10/2020 14:26

But are there any organised fireworks displays this year?

FlippidyFlop · 23/10/2020 14:28

No I imagine not, but there are a lot of things that aren't happening this year.

Probably not, but this year everything has been a little bit unusual.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 23/10/2020 14:30

And quite frankly, if all things to complain about this year, fireworks would be pretty low on the list.

covetingthepreciousthings · 23/10/2020 14:30

100% in favour of them being banned except for events.

Our local discount store is selling them BOGOF and I think it's only going to encourage people to get them and let them off. I wish shops would just stop selling them.

headstrong27 · 23/10/2020 14:31

I don't actually mind private displays but then my only experience of them is around Bonfire Night, Diwali. Every night for weeks would be annoying.

The difficulties around organised displays is they are often expensive, I used to go to 3 free ones as a kid. Now my nearest one attracts 50k which I find far to big.

womaninatightspot · 23/10/2020 14:33

I set off fireworks annually but I buy noise reduced ones and have no neighbours within a few hundred meters. It's a shame that people can't behave to the point that they have to be banned for everybody. Maybe you could have to apply for a licence and immediate neighbours could object if you were an arse.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 23/10/2020 14:33

Btw just to note, it’s not just firework night and new year, Diwali celebrations coming up involve fireworks.

I sadly don’t think they should be on sale to the public, but it saddens me as my fav memories growing up were bonfire night parties at home with fireworks.
Can we still allow sparklers at home?
