“Thrown under a bus”

Aargh! As a phrase it sets my teeth on edge and it’s being used everywhere about everything atm. By my reckoning having done a quick search here, about 99.99% of the country have been thrown under a bus recently. Just stop it! No one has actually been thrown under an actual bus. Think of some different words to use.

“Sweet spot” makes me shudder.

Mmn654123 · 22/10/2020 18:01

Somebody was thrown under a bus. Almost. In London. On a bridge. By a jogger.

That’s my contribution. Carry on.

The phrase ‘thrown under the bus’ always makes me think of this quote, from the Victoria Wood dinnerladies sitcom:

Jean - "It's a load of codswash dieting. All that misery for what? You could fall under a bus tomorrow."

Dolly - "I could. You couldn't fit under a bus, it'd have to be jacked up."

There are days when MN is genuinely informative and challenges my preconceptions, and there are days when expressing discomfort with a phrase makes me a sanctimonious virtue-signaller. Funny old place.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 22/10/2020 18:16

As a specific reference, there's also "to meet one's Waterloo".

Pomegranatespompom · 22/10/2020 19:00

Agree OP

Callipygion · 22/10/2020 19:16

“Get go” makes me scream inside!

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 22/10/2020 19:52

@thedancingbear

I hate this ridiculous and unnecessary 'metaphors'. Why can't people just use words that mean what they say?

it really boils my piss.

Nah... "Living her best life" and "You've Got This" are the worst 😡

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/10/2020 20:48

Where do you stand on Not on my watch ?

Saucery · 22/10/2020 20:53

I tend to think not my circus, not my monkeys, if someone uses it.

BadDucks · 22/10/2020 20:55

Haven’t seen anyone be apoplectic with rage for a while that one always used to do the rounds

BloggersBlog · 22/10/2020 21:20

"Get your ducks in a row OP"

ShebaShimmyShake · 22/10/2020 21:27

Lots of people seem to hate "ducks in a row". I don't mind it.

caughtalightsneeze · 22/10/2020 21:38

I've always thought of myself as easily irritated but none of these really bother me. I tell you what does though...the phrase 'at the end of the day'. It's the worst.
