To want to inflict harm on all of the Mr Men

StayCloseSpooky · 21/10/2020 21:38

DS 4 is obsessed with Mr Men books. Absolutely obsessed but it's getting to the point where I want to stab my eyes out just so I don't have to read another bloody one.

Why are they all so bloody smug?
Why is everything 'extraordinarily'?
Why does Mr Happy regularly pop up to be, quite frankly, a bit of a parsimonious prick?
WHY ARE THEY SO LONG?

I can't take it anymore. Please tell me I'm not the only one that wants to drop kick Mr Happy for being so bastarding passive aggressive?

I think I need a gin Gin

I feel empowered. I'm getting up early tomorrow to smuggle both box sets into the recycling bin under cover of darkness.

I've secretly thought they were judgemental, bullying, boring, badly written and inappropriate shite for years but didn't know i was allowed to, you know, actually admit to not liking the Mrs and Misses!

The best characters are the worms

StayCloseSpooky · 21/10/2020 22:43

@Itwasgoodwhileitlasted sorry meant to put a Grin on the end of that otherwise it sounded very aggressive haha! It looks like one mr men book too many has taken me over the edge

They're books that make your heart sink a little when a child hands you one to read...they feel really awkward to read, a bit wordy and feel a bit bleak somehow.

They always have lovely funky wallpaper in their houses though!

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2020 22:48

I do really like the illustrations, very good

The son wrote Mr Brave is that right? One of the worst ones. Plus there’s a typo.

Figmentofimagination · 21/10/2020 22:52

3yo DS loves when Mr Happy pops up in the other books. He'll just shout "HAPPY" with his arms out wide.

We've just bought him the Mr Men Christmas Advent. 24 Christmas themed Mr Men books to keep us entertained in December. Thank god DH does majority of the bed times.

DrWAnkenstein · 21/10/2020 22:52

They are like the Funnybones books.
I love them for the illustrations but the stories are so bloody dull and tongue twistery.

We need an anti-book club!!

Jj2431 · 21/10/2020 22:54

Why do theg repeat so often. They're horrendous and my son is making me read them all in order lol

StayCloseSpooky · 21/10/2020 22:55

@DrWAnkenstein funny bones is an abomination!!! How many times can you say skeleton on one fecking page. A lot, that's how many.

I'm up for an anti book club. The Jumblies also needs to be added. What kind of idiot goes to sea in a sieve?!

Any more additions for the black list? (Am well aware that this has escalated quite quickly...)

My DCs are 30 now, but they had these books.
When my elderly spinster aunt came to visit, DD, aged 2 at the time, toddled up to her with a pile of them. She put them in her great aunt’s lap one by one, announcing “Mr Tickle”, “Mr Happy”, until the final one, which was announced loudly and with relish as “Mr Grumpy Bastard!”
Grin

BeanieB2020 · 21/10/2020 23:02

I just... I misinterpreted the question "WHY ARE THEY SO LONG?" as applying to the Mr Men themselves instead of the length of the books and the imagery that produced in my brain of all these extra long Mr Men is making my evening better

LunaLoveFood · 21/10/2020 23:05

The trick is to read every other page and they still make sense (just, you sometimes need the odd word change).
Or because they are so small, the books can be conveniently hidden between books on the shelf so they can't be found and read!

DrWAnkenstein · 21/10/2020 23:06

I've avoided The Jumblies thankfully, I'll make sure to keep on doing so!

StayCloseSpooky · 21/10/2020 23:17

@BeanieB2020 well mr tall IS tall!

Cattenberg · 21/10/2020 23:30

Basically the bottom line in all of them is you need to change who you are to suit others

Yep. Or you will be punished. The punishment normally involves ritual humiliation. The ones I’ve read are about a hero/heroine who is brought low by their own fatal flaw. They’re Greek tragedies for toddlers.

DM has just borrowed Little Miss Bossy from the library in the hope it will give DD pause for thought.

OwlinaTree · 22/10/2020 00:00

these Mr Men book reviews are hilarious though!

We've only got Mr Skinny and a couple of Christmas ones, not too bad!

StayCloseSpooky · 22/10/2020 00:07

@OwlinaTree bleasdale was beaten to it Grin they are Brilliant

They're fucking crap. I hate them and my heart sinks when one of my kids asks for one for bed time story.

Mostly I hate that each book ends with the character losing the party of his personality that makes them unique. I'm probably over thinking but I think it's a random message to give to kids.

ForeverInADay · 22/10/2020 00:22

We have the Mr Men AND Little Miss Box Sets! Confused

Son with ASD has been having one a night after his proper age appropriate book for the past 4 (yes 4!) years. I know the words!!! Due to a deep seated (ASD linked) hatred of change he can not be persuaded to give them up. I fear we will be still reading them in another 4 years.

My top tips are:

  • if the kid is tired enough, some make sense not only if you miss a line but also if you miss a whole page
  • most can definitely have sentences shortened
  • speed reading (this still counts) they are possible to get through in about 3 minutes
  • as previous poster said, DO NOT GET THR BOX SET, leave the nostalgia of your child hood in the past

Ironically I just bought the 24 Christmas ones as the Advent Calendar. I crave variety!

NetballHoop · 22/10/2020 00:25

I could just about live with the Mr Men but the Rainbow Fairies really give me the rage.

Every sodding book is the same apart from the name of the fairy. My otherwise lovely SIL bought DD a set of the books and I have never before hated reading to her.

Cantdoitallperfectly · 22/10/2020 00:25

You can get a new breed of Mr Men books now -
Little Miss perfect does online dating..very funny and did give me a laugh (standing in the shop reading them)

Cantdoitallperfectly · 22/10/2020 00:28

Just googled it - it’s little miss shy does OLD
Mr Grumpy does fatherhood might be worth a look..

MrsGRamsay · 22/10/2020 00:35

I knew the person who now writes the Thomas series; she's an utter twat in real life too.

TartanDMs · 22/10/2020 01:40

The Munch Bunch are similarly tedious. My mother (bless her!) kept my entire collection of original Munch Bunch books - my aunt bought me one every month as a child until I had the whole set, and I was obsessed with them. When my eldest was born, the whole lot were sent my way with a great big smile and I eventually realised why my dad did bedtime stories with me so many times instead of my mum...

NotTheMrMenAgain · 22/10/2020 01:49

Hey OP - I can relate to your pain, see my username! But happy to report that this phase will eventually end, as all phases do - just hang on in there!
