To love living in the south west

Iftheclouds · 20/10/2020 20:07

I’m always being told that either central England or the south east is better. Aibu to love living in the south west? It’s cheaper here than most other places.

(I didn't say it was only the SW that was far from places but it's a bloody pain to not have a motorway nearer than an hour away)

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 20/10/2020 22:23

Well, salaries are very low. I guess it's fine if you can afford it

Hmm not true

tunnocksreturns2019 · 20/10/2020 22:26

@MrsMoastyToasty

Bristol, Bath and Poole have some of the most expensive property in the uk.
Well yes but I’m 15 minutes by train from Bath and I live in a really affordable town.

Defo west to east, wet to dry thing going on

Mammyloveswine · 20/10/2020 22:28

I live in the north east and I love it! Beautiful coastline within 15 mins, stunning countryside, Hadrian's wall.., plus so much green space in the centre of town! Beautiful well kept parks in walking distance from my house!

Porridgeoat · 20/10/2020 22:32

Best locations in this order

  1. South west
  2. wales and Scotland (curve ball)
  3. Yorkshire and Lancashire
  4. south east, London, midlands
madcatladyforever · 20/10/2020 22:32

The west is a million times better. I moved from the south east last year and it is the best thing I ever did in my life.
I hated the south east, it's noisy, unfriendly, traffic everywhere and jobs weren't that easy to find.
I live in Somerset and it's amazing. No problem with work as I'm NHS as they are very short of staff over here, got a bigger house for £50k less, it's rural, peaceful and very quiet, traffic is ok and for the first time in many years I feel truly relaxed.
Its only three hours from London too.

whyareyoulying · 20/10/2020 22:33

YABU
Moved to
Deepest darkest Somerset for DH job a few years ago, we lasted two years.
We both hated it.
We found that
The people were friendly but very insular
Haven't been back since we left and i have no plans to visit again in the future

Erm HmmConfused

@Tunnocksreturns2019 Me too! No need to live in a £500k mouldy Georgian terrace in order to have a regular wander around Bath.

Yes! Thank goodness! My budget as a widowed parent doesn’t stretch that far and I’m happy with my 1940s ex council house with the nice big ‘dig for victory’ garden.

What an odd thread. The SW is massive and variable just like any other region. Are you an estate agent trying to create some kind of buzz? How strange.

Lolalovesmarmite · 20/10/2020 23:00

I moved to Devon last year and it’s definitely the best place I’ve ever lived, and I’ve lived in a lot of places. It’s beautiful and green, just the right amount of hills and the coastline (north) is incredible. I never want to leave.

Of course you aren't being unreasonable. It's good to know that there is some happiness, somewhere in this country!

I've never lived in the south of England. I've lived in Liverpool, Manchester and currently Hull. I'm not really enamoured by the place to be fair, I've lived here a while and it's changed. All the shops are closing and there's so much gammon that the council may as well start giving out free tins of pineapple rings. Maybe I've changed though? We're here for the in-laws, they are in their eighties but when they depart, we'll be off to be near my DM (in her sixties and v robust so am not yet needed). Hopefully, I'll then be able to post 'AIBU to love living in Liverpool?'

Emmapeeler2 · 21/10/2020 09:04

The South West is a big place. Cornwall could be a 4 hour drive away from some parts. There is also a big difference between a market town 15 mins from Bath and rural Somerset/Devon in feel, affordability, jobs, access to transport links, things to do etc. But yes, as a general region it is lovely.

IamMaz · 21/10/2020 10:13

We have lived in SW since 1993 when DH was transferred here.
It's great and I still feel like I'm on holiday!!!

Seriouslymole · 21/10/2020 10:23

I live in a fairly uninspiring city in the South West and one of my colleagues always used to say I'd get off the train in 1970 when I went home from meetings in London. He wasn't far wrong. However, we are sandwiched between the sea and the moor and I feel incredibly lucky for that. But we are a long way from anywhere other than Cornwall!

House prices are relatively cheap here. We have a largish, 4 bed, three storey mid-terraced Victorian house with a hundred foot garden which is worth about £250k. My colleague in the South East has a small, 3 bed house with a small garden worth £475k. The difference is stark. We have been able to pay off our mortgage as a result.

I'm biased though, I've grew up in the SW (albieit a different part) so I will probably always love it.

Seriouslymole · 21/10/2020 10:23

*albeit

Orangeblossom7777 · 21/10/2020 18:47

Where are these places 15 mins from Bath? (we live in Bath and it is expensive, thinking of moving some time) I'm thinking perhaps Frome or Melksham? Bradford on Avon is similarly expensive...

NursieBernard · 21/10/2020 18:52

I have always lived in the SW and absolutely love it. However, property prices are not cheap compared to the average salary in the SW. It's a beautiful place to live but career opportunities a not great.

Orangeblossom7777 · 21/10/2020 18:57

Bath is only about an hour from London (career ops). But it costs a lot for the travel

woodhill · 21/10/2020 19:18

I can't wait to move away from London.
